( I am in Auburn, AL.) This is what I have from Stewart Diamond, a direct descendant of Martha Elizabeth Stone and Matt or Madison Stewart. I am stuck, too, trying to get beyond Matt who apparently served in the 9th Alabama infantry and whose wife, Martha, received a pension. Matt Stewart married Martha Elizabeth Stone, daughter of Rollin Stone and Harriett ?? She was born April 13, 1854 and died May 13, 1912. Children of Matt Stewart and Martha Stone: Mera Stewart, born 1883, married Wade ??? James Washington (Governor) Stewart, born April 26, 1886, Ashland, AL., died March 05, 1949, Henegar, AL. (We do not know if Governor was part of his name or a nickname. In one of the censuses he listed himself as "Gov". He was a Methodist preacher who lived in Centre, AL. in Cherokee County and was preaching in Henagar in DeKalb County when he died. His wife is buried beside him in the Henegar Cemetery in DeKalb County.) James (Governor) Washington Stewart was born April 26, 1886 in Ashland, AL. and died March 05, 1949 in Henegar, AL. He married Arcadia Lucretia Sargent, daughter of James Sargent and Emily Christine Williams. She was born Nov. 02, 1894 in Millerville, AL and died May 03, 1982 in Centre, AL. Children of James Stewart and Arcadia (Katy) Sargent: Bessie Lee Thelma born June 23, 1911, died Nov. 4, 1975 James Elvin Mera Christine Ethel Mae Arvis Lauren Gladdis Lemuel Maymie Rachel Ruby Malone Ellen Gail Bessie Lee Thelma (called Thelma) married Lorenza Vaughn Diamond. Their children: Lorenza Stewart Diamond, born Aug. 8, 1938 Vauncile Diamond, born Sept. 25, 1947 Rollin Stone has posted a message on this website that may interest you. I have much more detail on all of these people and several photographs. Your information will help me very much. I have access to all the census records through genealogy.com and ancestry.com and Family Tree Maker. I would like to know more about Matt Stewart. Do you know where he is buried? Apparently, the Stewarts came from Georgia and the Stones from South Carolina. Good luck!! Thanks for posting your message.
