I am researching BARNES in Clay County. To summarize, I am interested in the James William Barnes family. He married Sarah D. Brewster and Martha Serepti Taylor Smith. I speculate that his father is the James M. Barnes who appears first in the 1840 census in Talladega County. I think the Edward Barnes also in that census is probably the brother, uncle, or father of James M. Barnes. James M. brought his family from SC though he was born in NC. Edward was also born in NC and I'm not sure if he came directly from there - he may have been in TN for awhile based on birth info for children living with him in the census. Related families by marriage are also Haynes, Brewster, Rollins, Cole, Richards, Trussel, Triplett, Ellard, Dingler. I will provide details below for any who are interested. Jeanette --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My husband's ancestor is James William Barnes born about 1826 in SC. He married first Sarah D. Brewster on March 1, 1846 in Talladega County. Their children (using census data) are: Jane (or S. Jane such as Sarah Jane) ~1847 Malinda (or S. Malinda) ~1850 Elizabeth ~1855-57 Ellen ~ 1859 Sarah (Sallie) ~1861 probably married to a Smith and died July 1, 1936. His second wife is Martha Serepti Taylor Smith (Smith was her first husband, her parents are Paschal Harrison Taylor and Mary Amanda Davis) married Dec 16, 1866 in Talladega County. Their kids are: James P. ~1867 Mary Amanda April 12, 1869 (m. Estes) Lula (m. Joseph Tooel) 1871 Pierce Hiram (m. Fannie Jett) Lena 1875 Daniel Cress April 1877 (m. Lona C. (?) Vinson) Lavonia JUne 25, 1880 (m. William Vinson) Another infant, possibly a son named Oliver I speculate that James W. Barnes is the son of James M. Barnes. James M. had land in Fairfield County, SC and lived there before coming to Talladega (later Clay) county. He was born about 1778/79 in NC and died between 1870 and 1880 in Clay County, probably Lineville. He married Sena ? before 1820 in SC. She was born about 1787 in SC and died before 1870 in Clay County. There are only a couple of the kids who are proven to be his (Cynthia Ann, Martha, and Francis Marion I believe) and the others I list are speculation based on census information which indicates these Barnes were all born in SC. Based on that his kids are possibly: Drury T. 1811-1820 in SC Cynthia Ann 1821 Fairfield County, SC (married Andrew J. Haynes) Sarah Jane ~1825 SC (m. John D. Brewster) James W. ~1826 (above) Eliza A. ~1827 (m. William Rollins) Martha C. July 24, 1833 SC (m. Charles Shockley Cole) Francis Marion ~1835 SC (m. Sarah Ann Richards) one other female, possible Catherine C. m. James R. Eason??? Edward Barnes was born about 1766 in NC and died 1850-1860 in Randolph or Tall (later Clay) County. He may have had 2 or 3 wives. I think he may have married Nancy Dingler Oct 6, 1843 in Talladega County but I cannot be sure it's him and not a different Edward Barnes. Based on birth information in the census and other census data, his children are possibly the following: Nancy Ann Sept 22, 1814 NC (m. James Trussel) Sarah L. ~1816 NC (m. Hedgeman Triplett) Mary ~ 1818 NC (m. Thomas Ellard) Elizabeth ~1822 NC (m. Thomas P. Dingler) Jane (or Martha Jane??) ~ 1826 TN Joshua ~ 1828 TN George ~ 1829 TN I have more on these families and am willing to hare whatever I have. Please be careful in using this information as some of it is based only on one source (like census) and some of it is speculation as noted above. Jeanette
I am researching Barnes in Clay County and will summarize in a separate email the line which I am researching. This email is in reply to Merrell's regarding Susan F. Barnes as possible daughter of Lewis Barnes. I have only a little on Lewis Barnes at this time. I suspect him to be a brother to my ancestor and suspect that his father may be James M. Barnes. I have no evidence of this. However, there are only a few Barnes in Talladega/later Clay county early on and I think they are all related. >From the census data (1850-1880) and some marriage records, I have pieced together the following. Lewis F. Barnes born 1806-1813 in KY or SC (most often records refer to KY but if he's related to James M. Barnes then he lived for a long time in SC) and died after 1870 census and before 1880 census. Married Adelicia ? born 1813-1817 in SC. (Widow 62 years old in 1880 census) born in SC. Mother & Father born SC. Kids: James born 1839/40 in SC. Married a Harriet ? Note he was born in SC before the family moved to Talladega, later turned Clay, county. He is living next to Lewis in 1860 census. Harriet born 1841/42 in AL. Possibly married Thomas J. May Nov 5, 1865. Sarah/Sena C. born 1843 in AL. Possibly married Joseph K. Nail around 1867/68. (They are in 1870 census and 1880 census together, her with Father born KY and mother born SC; she is listed as Sinea and Senia despite being listed as Sarah in 1850 census with Lewis' household. From census I have names of 7 kids.) Carolina born 1846 in AL. Possibly died before 1860 census. Elizabeth born 1848 in AL. Susan F. born 1850/52 in AL. Seems she married J. Vincent Arnold 21 Nov 1872 per ancestry.com marriage records. Thomas J. born 1853/54 in AL. Living with mother alone in 1880 census - maybe he's running the family farm while other kids have all moved out. Roland C. born 1856/57 in AL. Your Susan F. appears in the 1870 census in Lewis' household. I suspect in 1840 Lewis might be enumerated with the James M. Barnes family in the Talladega County census. James M. Barnes was in Fairfield County, SC before moving to Talladega (later Clay) county - I think he may have been married there and all his children born there. (More in next email on James M. family.) Note Lewis' wife is from SC and first child was born in SC. I have civil war service record information on Lewis, which I got from a book called Hundley's Ragged Volunteers: 31st AL Infantry Lewis Barnes info: Private. Company E. Enrolled Talladega 4-16-62. [The Talladega enlistments were actually at Jenkins Old Field located near Talladega and the camp was called Goldwaite.] Disability discharge. 56 years old. Discharged July 30, 1862. Born in Kentucky. 5'10" dark complexion, black hair, black eyes. Farmer. Disease of the kidneys and lost use of lower extremities. Parolled by General Chrysler's troups in Talladega on May 22, 1865. I think my ancestor James W. Barnes may be the James Barnes also enrolled in this same company. Jeanette
I see a lot of surnames on this mailing list, but none that I am researching. Is anyone researching HAMLIN, HARDIN, GOSSIT, COLLIER, FARROW, PERRY, WATKINS, or SINGLETON from Clay, Cleburne and Calhoun Counties. Lisa Marland,OK

Carol C-H I have been researching the Jordan line in moderate detail. Not because there is a family relationship, but ......... Capt. Mortimer H. Jordan, MD commanded Company K of the Fourth Alabama Infantry. When it was absorbed into the regular army in 1917, it became the 167th Infantry of the 42nd [Rainbow] Division. My father was in Co. K and knew Capt. Jordan .... during training here in the US, and continuing into combat in France in 1918. My father was very seriously wounded on July 26, 1918 at the Battle of Chateau Thierry. Capt. Jordan was fatally wounded only a few days later. I have been working on my own family genealogy for several years, but have been doing a "Jordan project" because of that WW I link. I have a reasonably large amount of materials that I would be happy to share with you. My own independent work is only a small part of that. Most of my materials have come via the web on the internet. Have discovered that there is an enormous amount of Jordan research available on the web, and I can provide a big selection of web site URLs for you.. Let me know a bit more about the focus of your Jordan interests, and what I might be able to provide that would be helpful to you. Carl Thomas Knoxville, Tennessee

Dear Jeanette, Thanks for writing. I have very little information on the Barnes Family. My grandfather, Jefferson Vincent Arnold Sr., was born and lived in Clay County until about 1940 when he and my grandmother moved to Talladega where all of his children (Vernie Joiner, Minnie Haywood, Velma Goss, Wm Hubert Arnold, and JV Arnold Jr.) had already moved. The mother of Jefferson Arnold Sr was Susan Frances Barnes (b. 1850) who was married to James Vincent Arnold (b. 1853). Because their wedding on November 21, 1872 took place at the home of Lewis Barnes, I have speculated that Lewis was her father. He may have been her brother or even a cousin. The reference to this wedding is: >From Clay County Alabama Marriage Records http://www.rootsweb.com/~alclay/marriage/claya.htm #15 #15 J. Vincent ARNOLD to Susan BARNES on November 21, 1872, by B.L. Bellamy, Probate Judge, at Lewis Barnes’. I have no other information on the Barnes family and would be pleased if you have additional data you could share. Merrell Arnold
