I base that upon the birth of their first child in 1868. I suppose it could have been earlier. My question is this: Since Clay County was formed in 1866, at what date did they start recording marriages there? I was wondering if I should skip Ashland and try Talladega Co. (McCains were living in the Chandler's Springs area of Talladaga County in the 1860 census)

He came to this country from Scotland - with 3 brothers, James, Thomas, and William., and a sister, Anne Hopkins. sometime in the mid- 1740's. One brother, James Grierson, was an officer with the Georgia Militia, serving the Loyalists. James was killed due to siege of Augusta, after he had surrendered to the Patriots and had been paroled. He was given a full military funeral. He was married to a Creek Indian woman, and left 2 children in the Eufaullies. Thomas was serving with the Patriots and was killed by a Loyalist for no apparent reason. He left children in Scotland. I know nothing of William. Mrs. Hopkins died, leaving her land , money and slaves to James Grierson's children. Robert Grierson was married to Sin o gee, a Creek Indian woman of the Spanalgee Family. They had a large plantation at Hillabee, many animals, cotton fields, and slaves. He entertained Benjamin Hawkins, the Indian Agent -- and Hawkins wrote about him. Robert & wife had children. Sandy, James, Sarah, Catherine (Katy), William, Eliza, Walter. He was a friend of Andrew Jackson's, also. Robert was considered a Patriot and great help to the Revolutionaries and is buried in Pinckneyville, Clay County, Alabama I do not know what cemetery. Additional Comments: I am a descendant of Robert Grierson -- and this information plus more came to me through my grandmother, and mother -- both born in Indian Territories -- one in Alabama , and the other in Oklahoma territory....Willabelle Schultz File at: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/clay/military/revwar/other/nmt14grierson.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/alfiles/ File size: 2.2 Kb

Are there any persons researching the Alfred Robbins in Clay Co.? He is buried in Cragford/Wesobulga Cemetery, Clay Co. Alabama. He was married to Adeline Robinson Twilley before 1850. I know of no offspring from this union, but she did have some children by her first husband James M. Twilley who she married about 1833. Robin Wallace
Which of the Bridges lines are you researching? I'm having no success in learning anything about the parents of my gg grandfather Joseph Bridges born about 1817 in South Carolina. I don't know where in South Carolina; but Joseph was in Wayne County, Kentucky when on 18 November 1839 he married his 1st wife Elizabeth Margaret Griswold. -----Original Message----- From: Ann Oppenheimer <oppysgirl@satx.rr.com> To: ALCLAY-L@rootsweb.com <ALCLAY-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, June 22, 2004 2:02 PM Subject: [ALCLAY] Whitehorn Surname >Hi List, > >I am researching L. Sorry....wanted to make a correction to the previous post. Her death certificate says Clayton County Alabama. But Ive never found a Clayton County so I'm "assuming" its Clay County. Thanks Sharon Griffin-Cobb
Hello Everyone I'm new to the list and looking or Lett information from Clay County. According to my great grandmothers death certificate she was born in Clay County Alabama. I have also seen some information on their being Lett's in Clay and something about Lett mines. My great grandmothers name was Lucy Jane Lett. She was born to Mary Matilda Lett. It is unknown as to if Lett is the maiden or married name of Mary Matilda. Mary Matilda was born around 1849 and the true location is unknown. In 1900 census she is in Lamar County Alabama with one son named John O. Lett. That we know of she had two other children; Eugene ( probably the oldest but birth date unknown at this time ) and Lucy Jane born in Feb. 7, 1874 and according the death certificate; Clay County. She died in New Braunfels Texas and was shipped back to be buried in Monroe County Mississippi. The death certificate says Acker cemetery but I believe this to be Egger. No proof of that yet. Any information about these Letts or any of the Lett's from Clay County would be appreciated. Thanks! Sharon Griffin-Cobb
Clay County AlArchives Obituaries.....Graben, Louis October 24 1908 ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/al/alfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Herb Griffin n4zov@cableone.net June 18, 2004, 7:38 am The Lineville Headlight, October 30, 1908 Louis Graben Louis Graben one of the oldest citizens of this section, was killed at his home six miles east of Lineville Saturday evening October 24, by being kicked and dragged by a mule. The deceased has tethered the mule out to graze and the mule became entangled in the rope, when Uncle Louis as he was called, went to disentangle him. As he did so, the mule kicked him and the rope wrapped around Uncle Louiss arm. Then the mule made a mad dash and dragged Uncle Louis at will. The aged wife of the deceased was present but unable to stop the wild and freighted mule, but she gave the alarm, when neighbors came the mule had stopped and Uncle Lewis, though yet alive, was fearfully bruised by being dragged over the rough ground and rocks. Though much suffering he lingered until Sunday morning at 2 oclock when the spark of life went out. The deceased was a German and was born near Berlin, Germany. He did not believe in the compulsory service in the German army. So when he was conscripted for army service, he ran away and came to this country. After remaining in New York for a short time, he came south and settled in South Carolina. The family eventually moved to Alabama, near Lineville. Soon afterwards, the Civil War broke out and Louis Graben was one of the first men in this section to volunteer. He remained in the Confederate Army throughout the conflict and all who saw him under fire bear testimony that he was one of the bravest soldiers they ever saw. He was a honest and honored and respected by all who knew him. He leaves a widow and a large number of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was seventy-nine years of age at the time of his death and was one of the hardiest citizens who ever lived in this section. They are my grandparents. I'm not sure which county in Alabama they lived in. I was adopted and have found my birthmother. Her maiden name was Sarah Ann Evans and her death certificate shows her parents names were Jessie Evans and Blanche Denny. She was born in 1927 and her SSN shows it was issued in Alabama. I tried to get her birth certificate from the health department, but they said I'd need her parents full names and where she was born. You can email me at rdf@cableone.net.
