Harriett, Thanks so much for the response. I did get another e-mail from a person who lives in Clay Co. and she thinks that perhaps he does in fact have a headstone. I will probably just drive up there next month. I went to Ashland a few yrs ago but, evidently went to the new cemetery instead of the old one. Will let you know what I find........ Talk later and thanks, Gloria

Hi Gloria, I can't tell about the Ashland Cemetery, but I do know that in our west Texas cemetery at Water Valley, names were recorded, but not all of the graves have markers. It wasn't a requirement in earlier times, but when the WV Cemetery Association was formed, they made it mandatory. In a few cases, there are small, square stones with only a cross to mark where bodies are buried, so even if the names of the dead are on a list, there is no way of knowing which body is in which grave. Fortunately, however, the great majority of graves do have headstones. Harriet
I believe if his name is recorded in the Cemetery Book, then he should have a head stone. Rosemary Birchfield Filyaw Gmjerkins@aol.com wrote: >I find that my gg-grandfather, William W. I find that my gg-grandfather, William W. Wilkins 1815-1884, is listed in burials at Old Ashland Cemetery in Ashland. I am wondering if he has a headstone. Would his name appear in cemetery records if he did not have one? I am planning to come to Ashland next month to visit the cemetery if he indeed has a headstone. If there is anyone who lives in the Ashland area and plans a visit to the cemetery soon, I would be so appreciative if you would let me know if you see his grave. I also need to know exactly where the cemetery is located. I am told there is a new Ashland Cemetery and the Old Ashland Cemetery. I will be so thankful for your kindness in helping me. On my original post, dated 10/16/2004, I stated one of Daniel Character's sons was Giles. Looking through Giles's pension record he states "he was mistaken as to his age" on the original application in 1899. Since then,"he visited his mother in Georgia" & she says "his birthdate is 23 Mar. 1839". My point is, Daniel's wife (Jemimah) died in Clay Co. in 1888 (I have verfication) & he says he visited his mother in 1899. So, she is not his mother & it looks like Daniel is not his father. Can anyone shed light on who Giles belonged to? Kitty Bussey kmbussey@yahoo.com
