Just wanted to let all of you know that Sam Russell passed away last night. When I spoke with him on Friday, he said one of the hardest things he has to do is give up this list and his Etowah list. He loved genealogy very much and wanted to help each and everyone of you find your family ties. Debra thank you for taking the list over and if there is anything I can do to help please let me know. I will miss you Sam. Hilda

Dear Clay County Researchers, We have some unfortunate news as our Dear Sam Russell, for personal reasons, has decided at this time that he will no longer be administrating Clay County Mailing List or Clay County AlGenWeb page. He offered to let me take over the sites for him and I've gladly accepted and hope to do as good a job as Sam has done over the years. Please join me in letting Sam know how much he is appreciated and in wishing him the best. If there is anything that I can do to help with Clay Co. researching just drop me a line. Thank You, Debra Crosby
Thanks for all you've done for the researchers on this list over the years. You will be missed, but we won't quit! Judy Busch
Sam has done an excellent job and has been a tremendous help to everyone on the list. I know he has spent many many hours of his time to help people like me. Thank you very much Sam. Marland Mountain Henagar, AL

I am searching for links to my Arnold family in Alabama. The last solid data on this branch of ancestry is my paternal grandfather, Jefferson Vincent Arnold (b 2 Sept 1884; d 14 July 1961 in Talladega). He lived for some time in Ashland, AL where he and his wife, Anna (Texanna) Burgess, raised five children: Vernie Joiner, (William) Hubert Arnold (my father), Minnie Haywood, Velma Goss, and Jeff V. Arnold Jr. They rented land for farming several miles south of Ashland until the early 1930s, but all eventually moved to Talladega. Only Jeff Jr. survives, but he is unable to assist in the identification of other relatives. It is likely that my gr-grandfather was James V. Arnold (b. 1849) who may have moved to Clay County from Bibb County. My probable gr-gr-grandfather may have been William V. Arnold (b. 1821). I would appreciate hearing from anyone who is related or who has information on this family. Merrell Arnold 10209 Ledbury Way Louisville, KY 40223 melharnold@aol.com

She married CHARLES LEE MATHIS in 1909. I have her parents as GREENBERRY H. MATHIS, JR. and MARTHA CALLAWAY farming in Clay County, Alabama in 1880. G.B. SHADDIX, JR. was buried in the Pelham Cemetery, in 1920, MARTHA had passed on earlier and was buried in Childersburg, Alabama. GREENBERRY H. MATHIS, SR. was born 1814 in Georgia, but I do not have the name of his wife. I would love to share information, I have some interesting details, some of which were passed on by my father, CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS MATHIS, known as "Buck" to everyone. As I have read through the SHADDIX queries, it's interesting to see how often the name "Columbus" comes up. CYNTHIA'S mother, MARTHA CALLAWAY, had two brothers named ALFRED PIERCE and CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS. Funny that in two generations, there was another set, my father and his older brother. My uncle, ALFRED PIERCE MATHIS, named his son ALFRED as well. I have seen COLUMBUS in many other listings of SHADDIX as well. I look forward to hearing from you. Mary Margaret Collum
