    1. [17] Riddle Family
    2. Tricia Smith
    3. Researching the Riddle family which has lots of connections to Clay, Cleburne, Randolph, and Talladega Coounties. My specific ancestor is David Gideon Riddle, b. 12 May 1803, Irwin Co, GA, d. 12 May 1896, Etowah Co, AL. The "David" part of his name may be an error, first because I believe he is the brother of a David Riddle and second, because I have found no record of him actually using that name. All records I have found of him are in the name of "Gideon Riddle." The David part comes from his tombstone, located at Hopewell Missionary Bapt Cemetery in St Clair Co, AL. Gideon seems to have been one of 9 sons of William Riddle and Rachel Chism. The others include: Bradley G. Riddle Lewis Riddle David Riddle Presley Riddle Thomas Riddle Henry Riddle William Riddle One other that I haven't determined the name On the 1840 Talladega Co, AL census, there are listings for Gideon, Presley, William, Henry, and Thomas. David was still in Monroe Co, GA and Lewis was also there, living with his parents. He never married and was listed on a census record as "idiotic." Bradley was living in Talbot Co, GA--I don't believe he ever moved to the same area as his other brothers. He went to Dale Co, AL. By 1850, their mother, Rebecca, had moved to Talladega Co and was shown on both the 1850 and 1860 censuses. David, Thomas, and William are also shown living in Talladega Co. Gideon is shown at that time on the Randolph Co census, and he remained there through the 1860 census. In 1870 and 1880, he lived in Cleburne Co. The ED in 1880 was Arbacoochee. I have seen that listed as an area of Clay Co also. Was Cleburne Co ever a part of Clay or something like that? Gideon was married two times, first to Rebecca Jackson Caldwell on 28 Jun 1832 in St Clair Co. Rebecca was born 6 Nov 1809, SC and died in May 1850 in Randolph Co, AL. Together, they had the following children: Louisa F. Riddle, b. abt 1833, AL (She is only listed on the 1850 census with the family) Sylvannus W. Riddle, b. 29 Apr 1835, Kelly Springs, Talladega Co, AL- d. Jun 1927, Etowah Co, AL (DOB & POB come from CSA record) Jasper Riddle, b. abt 1838, AL (He is shown with Gideon on the 1850 census and on the 1860 census in Rusk Co, TX where he and Sylvannus had gone. I have no record of him beyond that date) William Henry Harrison Riddle, b. 1840, AL, d. 27 Mar 1919, Etowah Co, AL. (Aft his abt 1859-60 marriage to Mildred Conner, he lived in Randolph, then Cleburne Co before moving to Etowah Co in the 1880's) Martha Riddle, b. abt 1842 AL (She's shown on the 1850 and 1860 censuses, but I have no further info beyond then) Mary Riddle b. abt 1844 AL (As with Mary, on those 2 censuses, then no further record) John W. Riddle, b. abt 1845 AL (Shown on the 1850 & 1860 censuses) Gideon Riddle b. abt 1847 AL (He is the youngest child listed with the family on the 1850 census and he is never listed again) Robert Riddle, b. abt 1850, AL (He is shown only on the 1860 census. I find it strange that he wasn't on the 1850) As you can see, I have a lot of bits and pieces, but not much in the way of an actual family record. Any information on or connections to the Riddle family would be greatly appreciated! TK Smith

    2. I am looking for info about the Joseph Washington Clifton of Hollins, Ala and his brothers or sisters. Also would love to get some substantiated history about Hollins (Clay County) around the early 1900 when it was suppose to be a thriving town. My grandfather was suppose to own a couple of business there but those are only rumors and I would just love to hear bout the town and all its people. Virginia Cliftton White vdcw22@Aol
