Periodical Source Index - PERSI The Periodical Source Index, or PERSI, is the largest subject index to genealogical and historical periodical articles in the world. Created by the foundation and department staff of the Historical Genealogy Department of the library here in Fort Wayne, Indiana, PERSI is widely recognized as being a vital source for genealogical researchers. PERSI is a comprehensive subject index covering genealogy and local history periodicals written in English and French (Canada) since 1800. The time period of the articles ranges from the 1700s to the present. More than 1.8 million index entries from nearly ten thousand titles are represented by this work. PERSI is available on CD-ROM, at Family History Centers, at various libraries and to Ancestry.com subscribers. PERSI does not contain the actual article, but rather is only an index to tell you that there was an article published and which magazine it appeared in. To obtain copies of the articles indexed in PERSI, have your reference librarian locate facilities that carry that particular journal / magazine, etc. You can visit a library to read the actual article, submit an interlibrary loan request or order it by mail. Follow the particular facility's procedures for obtaining copies. Many of the journals sited for the Alabama articles will be available in Alabama libraries. Since the index is compiled by the Allen County Public Library, they have every article referenced. If your local library does not have the magazine, you can order a copy from Allen County (for a reasonable fee), or request it by Inter-Library Loan from your local public library. To obtain copies of articles in the PERSI index from the Allen County Library , contact the Allen County Public Library Foundation, P.O.Box 2270, Fort Wayne, IN 46801-2270. Send this form describing the articles to be copied, provide the full entry from PERSI and the name of the journal. Request only six articles at a time. The charge is $7.50 for each letter, pre-paid, plus $0.20 per page copied to be billed to you. Requests not acceptable by phone, fax, or e-mail. Please allow 6-8 weeks.
