    3. Dear Richard, Did you get an answer to this question? I know that Marion Lodge was part of the Masons. I am interested in it, too. I am wondering if any membership records exist, which would hopefully give some background information on members in the 1800s. If they exist, where would I find them? 1. Re: Surname: Alston
    2. BP Bost and Clarke List: TH Ball states in his book "Lemuel J. Alston removed from Greenville, South Carolina and settled on the Tombigee river, opposite St. Stephens, in 1816. He owned two river plantations, one on the east and one on the west side of the river. About 1827 he removed to a location one mile and three-quarters north-east of where Grove Hill was afterwards founded. This became known as the Alstons place and here, in 1836 he died, at the age of seventy-six; leaving six sons and two daughters, one only surviving child, Colonel W.W. Alston". Colonel W.W. Alston was born in 1799. The Alstons place was later known as "the Rocks". W. W. Rotch was my great great grandfather. He owned 2,000 acres of the old "Rocks" plantation in 1876. TH Ball states in his book (chapter on the Present 1876),that Mrs. Coxwell now resides at the Rocks. Route 1 in Jackson, Alabama runs into the Rocks plantation. My great great mother was Elmira Alston, (mulatto domestic servant) she and her descendants are buried in the Rotch cemetery which is located on the old Rocks plantation. W. W. Rotch is buried at Pleasant Grove cemetery in Clarke County. I've often wondered if Elmira might have been connected to Lemuel Alston clan, based on the history of ownership for the Alston place. Her mother was Georgia Osborne. Clues, comments, etc, welcomed. Any information on connections btwn Alston and Osbornes, appreciated.

    3. Dear P. Bost you said "Any information about him (Lemuel Alston) would be greatly appreciated, i.e., siblings, offspring, etc." This is something about the Alstons Ball also mentions other Alstons, but no Lemuel Here is some other stuff also. you probably already have it but here it is anyway. I remember a reference as to someone living in the Alston place but can't remember who. I will try to find it and let you know if I do. Last items show Land of Alstons Land you are interested in is sections just north of Grove Hill. I have a topo map of area If I find where will e-mail you again. Does your Internet provider and your computer accept JPM graphics? The Clarke County list does not. If you can receive graphics I will scan my map for you re the section areas Lemuel Alston used to own property in. Bureau of Land Management site not open today or yesterday on Internet. Not my kin, just helping. I don't have anything on family. this info says Lemuel married in 1854, so must be a son in 1854. may be where son lived rather than father if your lemuel died in 1836. 3. Hello Clarke County, I hope someone will be able to help me find out about Marion Lodge. I have an obituary on my gr,gr, grandfather J.W.M. Anderson. He lived in Suggsville, Clarke County, Alabama. I would like to find out what the Marion lodge was. Was it a something like the Masonic Lodge? J.W.M. Anderson died in Mobile , AL during the Civil War in 1863. He left behind his wife, Nancy C.(McClure) Anderson and 6 children. the children were named 1)Robert James, 2)Jesse William, 3)Effie Ann, 4)Maria "Dolly", 5)Thomas 6)William Anderson. All of these children were born in Clarke County before the Civil War. J.W.M. Anderson (Joseph William Marvin, I think that what the initials stand for)bought property in 1849 from a man named Crawford in the swamp land of Clarke Co. I know that two of his children lived in the swamp with their families after they married. The children were Jesse William (my great grandfather) who married Eleanor "Ellen"Dunn. and Maria "Dolly" who married Anthony Wayne Dunn. When they moved out of the swamp area they sold it to Sewell White. Any help on this family would be greatly appreciated.

    3. Thanks to everyone for pointing me in the right directon. "Hi there. Horse Creek in on the Marengo Clarke County border . My ggg grandfather settled there around 1812. Interestingly enough, they moved from Abbeville District , SC., where they also lived near a "Horse Creek. There are some old maps of AL which show they area clearly." "Horse Creek flows basically in an east-west direction from US 43, about five miles below Dixon Mills, to the Tombigbee River. Its drainage area is south central, near the Clarke County Line, and southwest Marengo County. The creek meanders northeast from US 43, crosses County Road 7 about 3/4 mile south of Exmore and CR6, continues in an easterly direction roughly this same distance below CR6 until it is south of Coxheath, about 1 1/4 miles. From here the creek continues east then southeast then east again as it crosses Alabama Hwy 69 about 11/2 miles north of Putman. It continues east another mile, turns north and another 2 1/4 miles empties into the Tombigbee. If you look on a state map this area would be framed by Alabama Hwy 10 on the North, US 43 on the East and Alabama Hwy 69 on the West. Other communities near the creek; Hoboken is about 1 1/4 miles south the creek crossing on CR 7. Nicholsville is about 1 1/2 mile southwest of Hoboken on CR 20. Lasca is about half way between Putnam and Nicholsville" " Horse Creek runs through Marengo County. I believe it forms in the Clay Hill area, which is located on the Clarke/Marengo line. It flows through the Exmoor area, and crosses Highway 69, north of Putnam, and eventually flows into the Tombigbee River, northwest of Putnam." ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! 3. Thanks to everyone for all your kind help. "Thanks for the info. The Bedsoles were quite notorious in the 1890's in that part of the country and played a big role in the "Mitcham War" of Clarke Co. A very interesting period of history written by Harvey H. Jackson in collaboration with Joyce Burrage and James A. Cox and published by The Clarke County Democrat, P. O. Box 39 Grove Hill, AL 36451" "There are also Bedsoles in Marengo County. When I was a kid, one of the department stores in Linden was Bedsole's. There may have been more than one Bedsole's store. I also remember there being a few people named Bedsole, although I never really knew them." "There was also a family named BEDSOLE who came to Clarke Co., from Walton Co., FL in 1866. Edward BEDSOLE lived in the New Prospect Beat, also known as Mitcham Beat, where trouble began to stir in the 1880's. It culminated in the "Mitcham War" of 1893 when Ernest McCorquodale was murdered by a gang called Hell at the Breech. A posse was formed, which turned into a mob, and a son of Edward BEDSOLE, named Tooch BEDSOLE was killed for his part of the gang's activiities. The story of this incident is well told in a book called The Mitcham War of Clarke Co., AL which the Clarke Co. museum sells in its gift shop." ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET!
