I'm researching the McClinton family in Alabama. As best I can tell, most of my relatives lived in Clarke, Escambia, Marengo, and Washington counties but I'm interested in information about the McClinton's that lived in any of the counties in Alabama. I've been told that my Alabama McClinton ancestors came from South Carolina. I have a copy of Art McClinton's book. It looks like my McClinton ancestors were outside the "Old 96 District" area of South Carolina, which is where the McClinton's that Art McClinton's book primarily dealt with were from. Does anyone have any information on any of the South Carolina McClinton's that lived outside the "Old 96 District" that they can share with me? I would really appreciate any information on this family that anyone can provide. Thanks!

The McClinton's came from the Abbeville, South Carolina, area to Alabama. There is a book on the McClinton's, called "McClinton Families of Old Ninety-Six and Abbeville Districts South Carolina and Their Westward Movement in the Colonial and Early Years of America" by Arthur T. McClinton. I ordered a copy about 4 years ago from: Celia M. McClinton 405 Highlands Lane Harrisonberg, VA 22801 It cost $20 then - you might check to see if it is still in print and available. Information on Clarke County, families is limited - it focuses on a branch of the family that went from South Carolina to Illinois, but does include information on South Carolina ancestry and lists all sources of information. As far as the Clarke County McClinton's, here is what I have on the original settler, Samuel M. McClinton, and his 10 children. Descendants of Samuel M. McClinton 1 Samuel M. From Clarke County Journal dated June 23, 1864: "We are pained to learn that Lt. A. B. Cleveland, of Wirt Adams Cavalry, died a short time after the amputation of his leg, an account of which we published some few weeks since. Mr. A. Pate, of the same company, wounded on the same day, has also died. John M. Bettis, son of our Probate Judge, a member of company A, 38th Alabama, and as good a soldier as any commander could desire, was wounded near Marietta, Ga., on the 27th ult., and died on the next day. The wound was in his head. A. J. Benson, Jr., of company I, 5th Alabama, was wounded in the leg on the 5th of May, rendering amputation necessary, from the effects of which he has since died. Lieut. B. C. Foster, of the same company was wounded in the leg on the 30th ultimo-amputation was performed, but he soon died from its effects. He was a brave and gallent young officer. S. S. Brittingham, of company E., 24th Alabama, an old and well known citizen of this county, died in hospital at West Point, Ga., a few weeks since. Our county has suffered a geat loss in the death of these good and brave men and of many others whose names we have not seen."
Dear List, Will someone please help me identify where my ancestors lived? I am a descendant of Matthew Coleman Cox (b: 1802) and Eleanor Robinson Cox (b: 1807). According to information from one of my aunts they lived most of their lives on a plantation in Satilpa. Since Matthew is buried in Cox Cemetery on the South side of Satilpa Creek off County Rd 21, 5 miles east of Coffeeville I would presume that they probably lived within a mile or two of that area. But, she also says that Matthew, his son John, and brother-in-law Rev William Carter built the old Tallahatta Episcopal Church South. Where is this? Is it near Tallahatta Springs? Regards, Ernie Howell

Can anyone possibly tell me where (or if) I might be able to find a Mrs. Frances King of Clarke County; she was possibly the writer of an article on the Wilson-Finch Families of Clarke County, published in the Clarke County Historical Society Quarterly in 1978. References cited at the end of the article include "Family records in the files of Mrs. Frances King." I would like to find Mrs. King or some of her family in the hope that some of these family records include a specific reference to my g-g-grandmother, Melissa Cliff Finch Davis, as a child of Hite Finch and Matilda Wilson Finch Henderson and/or as a grandchild of Joshua Wilson. If anyone can help me find Mrs. King or her family I would be very grateful. Thank you, Nancy Harwood
