    3. When did Choctaw Corner cease to exist as a city? I know Thomasville became a city in 1889. I know that Choctaw Corner and Thomasville co-existed for some time. But when did Choctaw Corner stopped to be a city and become a spot? When was it then incorporated into the city of Thomasville? Or is it in the Thomasville township or post office, but not part of the city of Thomasville proper? Does anyone know of a map of the Choctaw Corner town? How large was it? I am amazed how a city can disappear. When I was saw the area, I did not see the remains of a city, let lone a major center of business. Perhaps I am not looking in the right spot and it was off the road more. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Join Juno today! 2. Cassandra Davis
    3. Does anyone know of the Horse Creek Church and the Bettis Methodist Church? They churches were active up to at least the early 1900's. I have found references to them in documentation. However, I do not know where they were, except maybe somewhere in the border area of what is now northwest Clarke and southwest Marengo counties. They may or may not be standing structures. They may grown over and/or off a main road. Thanks ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 3. I don't think the Grove Hill Academy still exists. But it is written about in "Clarke County Alabama and Its Surroundings", by Rev. T. H. Ball. Grove Hill, AL, 1882. Reprinted by Clarke Co. Historical Society, 1978. He says the Academy opened in 1836 and that he was the principal from 1851 to 1853, then from 1854 to 1855. John C. Foster is listed as principal from 1857 to 1859, as you say. There isn't too much about the academy in the book, but I believe several FOSTERS were mentioned. It's worth a look. 3. My grandfather's younger brother, Albert Sidney Davis, was born in Milam County, TX in 1881. In the 1900 census, he is shown as living in Clarke County with his aunt and uncle, Alexander Harvey Grayson (his mother's younger brother) and Caroline Emily Deborah Davis Grayson (his father's youngest sister) and with his grandmother, Melissa Cliff Finch Davis. He died in Birmingham, AL in 1927. I find no record of him in between his birth and the 1900 census. His father and his brothers moved on to Bell County, TX by 1886; I also find no record of his mother after his birth. I am wondering whether his mother may perhaps have died during his early childhood and he was taken back to Alabama to live with family. Might there be school records existent from that era which might show whether he was actually in Clarke County at any point between, say, 1886 and 1900? Nancy Davis Harwood Houston, TX

    3. Thanks to everyone who replied. It all was a great help. I truly appreciate the explantions. Here are some items I recieved. ------------------------------------- A section is 640 acres or a square with 80 acres on a side. This would also be a square mile. The description is shown below: _________________________________ | | | | | | | NE Π| NW Π| | | | | | | | |________|________| | | | | | NW Π| NE Π| |_________________|________________| | | | | | | | Section 10 | | | | | |_________________________________| Township and Range are just divisions of property (larger) and would show on any property map. Hope this helps. Jess Bettis Austin, Texas ---------------------------------------------------- I have a map of Clark County, AL which shows the ranges and townships, but I am sorry to say that I do not have one for Marengo County. I can tell you that the land you are looking for is in Marengo County and should be around 3 miles north of the county line and near Nicholsville. 2. Cassandra, I just realized that I had forgotten to answer one part of your question. >Where do you find out township numbers >and then the sections of a township? Some maps list the township and range numbers. I have a map of Choctaw Co. AL (one of my research areas) that I picked up in a gas station/convenience store on my of my trips to AL to visit family. It doesn't list the township/range numbers, but it does number the sections (1 - 36) and identifies each township block with a number like A1, B1, A2, etc. With information that another researcher sent me, I was able to label my map with the correct township/range numbers. She also gave me an address for ordering maps. I have not ordered from them, but I will list the address in case you are interested. 1. Re: ? Township 12 ?
    2. Hello Cassandra (and other Clarke Co. folks who might be interested)! You said, >I have been looking at real estate sales. I am lost. >This is a how property is referenced. >"northwest quarter of northeast quarter and >northeast quartern of northwest quarter of >section 10 Township 12 Range 2 East >containing 80 acres or less" Another researcher and I were discussing land records recently and I was asking some of the same questions you are asking. Here are some of the things I learned. The way I understand it, a township is a square that measures six miles on each side. Each township is divided into equal sections numbered 1 through 36. Beginning at the top right corner count six squares left, then for the next row begining at the left, count squares 7 thru 12 from left to right, etc (a zig-zag pattern). Each section is 640 acres. For the "northwest quarter..." stuff (it's really called the Aliquot Part), imagine a section divided into four parts, labeled northwest, northeast, southwest and southeast. Each of those parts can be further divided into four more parts (approx. 40 acres each) called the northwest corner of the northwest square (NW of NW or even NW/4 of the NW/4), northwest corner of northwest square (NE of NW), southwest corner of the northwest square (SW of NW), etc. The best way to see it might be to draw a diagram -- at least it helped me visualize it. OK, the next part would be how to locate a particular Township and Range. To pinpoint it exactly, you need to know what the "principle meridian" for the township and range you are referring to. There are a several meridian points that are used, but if the land records you are looking at are for Clarke County, AL, I would guess that it would be the St. Stephens Meridian. The townships are identified as north or south of a horizontal line running through the meridian (St. Stephens.) The ranges are identified as east or west of a vertical line running through the meridian. Based on the info in your message, "section 10 Township 12 Range 2 East" I would guess that the land listed is near the Clarke Co and Marengo Co. line, possibly near Nicholsville in Marengo Co. I don't have a map of those counties that shows the township and ranges, but that would be my guess. The Aliquot Parts you list would be two parts at the top and center of a section of 16 parts. A good place to look at land records is: www.glorecords.blm.gov I haven't read their explanation of land records, but it might explain it a little better than I did. They have records of original land patents, the item you list from the Clarke County Democrat probably was a later sale of the land. Hope some of this helps! Janis
