    1. ABERNATHY?
    2. Nancy Harwood
    3. I am trying to identify two photographs from probably the 1870s/1880s. One is of a young man, and is labeled "Jim Abernathy." The other is of a young woman, possibly of a little earlier date, and labeled "Nicy (or Micy) Abernathy." I am assuming they came to my grandfather's family because his mother's sister, Susan Rebecca Grayson, married a William Abernathy ca 1851 in Marengo Co. I believe William to have been a son of T.S. Abernathy. I do not show children of Susan Rebecca's marriage to include a Jim or a Nicy, and would appreciate help in figuring out who these people are. Nancy Harwood

    1. Prichard Personals - 1943
    2. Nancy Harwood
    3. A clipping I just found, dating to sometime in 1943 after the 19th of February. It's headed "Prichard Personals", and possibly is from the Clarke Co. paper: Visitors to Prichard this week included Mrs. Lydia Davis, her daugther, Miss Clara Jane Davis, and Mrs. Mary Carrol from Temple, Texas. They were the guests of Judge and Mrs. W.I. Davis, and the judge accompanied them to Thomasville, Ala. -- where they visited Judge A.S. Johnson and Mrs. Sue E. Johnson. They also visited Bashi, where they were the guests of Carlton Patterson and family and Oscar Terry and family. (The visitors were my grandmother and two aunts. Will Irby Davis was my grandfather's double first cousin, Sue Johnson was his half-sister, and Albert Johnson was his half-nephew. I believe the Pattersons and Terrys also to have been cousins.) I am interested in finding out if anybody is researching any of the Johnsons, Pattersons, or Terrys mentioned here. Nancy Davis Harwood Houston, TX

    1. log church between Prichard and Thomasville?
    2. Nancy Harwood
    3. In an old scrapbook belonging to the one of my six aunts who believed labeling pictures was not a sin, I just found a picture of what is labeled as "a log church between Thomasville and Prichard, over 100 years old." The photo dates to a trip to Alabama taken by my grandmother and aunts in 1943. What church would that have been? Is it still there? Nancy Harwood Houston, TX

    2. I just found, in a box of old pictures, a photo of two little girls, approximately five and three years old, dating probably from ca 1880-1905. No studio is indicated, but on the back of the photo is written, "Charles Grayson's children by 2nd wife, half-sister to Mary" and, in another spot, "Miss Trudie (or Sudie) and Annie Grayson." I think these children must be the children of Charles O. Grayson, son of Young W. Grayson and Rebecca Emeline Capell -- he is one of the so-far-unaccounted-for siblings of my great-grandmother, Harriet Elizabeth Grayson. Charles, born in 1835, is listed in his father's will in Marengo County, AL in 1846, but I have found no further record of him. I know that his mother moved to Clarke County after his father's death, but I have not found him there, either. Since the photo of the two little girls was in my aunt's possession in Texas, I am wondering if Charles Grayson was one of the Graysons who came to Texas. Does anyone recognize Charles, with a second wife sister to Mary, and Misses Trudie (Sudie) and Annie Grayson? Nancy Harwood Houston, TX

    1. Joshua A Sharp Family
    2. Richard Sharp
    3. I am researching my 2nd great grandparents, Joshua A Sharp and Mary Bussey Sharp. They moved to Clarke county after the Civil War, maybe abt 1868. They lived in Clarke and had 2 more children there. In the year 1877 they left in a ox-drawn wagontrain of 47 souls en-route to Tx. They left from a small church there in Clarke. On the train that I know of were Sharps, Elisha Roberts Family, Elizabeth Bussey White Family , who was Mary Bussey's sister. I think there was a Courtney Family and others . If you can help me I would appreciate it much. Thanks Richard Sharp

    3. Ray I agree I too thought it would be a goldmine of info that should be on line. I belonged to the Clarke county hist society in the late 1970's and found some of my old issues the other day. I wish we could get someone to volunteer to scan or even better do OCR on them if they still have them available. Wouldn't it be a wonderful resource? I hope that someone has kept a copy of them at least. Volunteers would index to back issues and type and or scan the stories into text files to be placed online in a safe place. Ownership of the copyright to this treasure would remain with the Historical Society of Clarke County. If there was a way to obtain copies of back issue stories just an index would be required. Today there is no way to research the back issues using an index. Several Libraries contain the back issues but without an index the back issues are near useless. Last week while in the Library in Mobile, AL I tried to use these quarterlies to research the salt oozes in Clarke County but could not take the time to read each issue to find the good stories contained in some of the back issues. An index would have made this required job easy. All that is required to get this work done is permission from the current members of the Historical Society. With their permission we can get this 'gold mine' of data on Clarke Co., AL out to the researchers. ...... Ray Revette/FL

    3. Hello Everyone, I was hoping I could find someone in Grove Hill who would be willing to help me out by getting me copies of marriage certificates for some of my ancestors. I have all of the information that is needed. I just need someone who is closer to the courthouse in Grove Hill than I am. I would be glad to pay any and all fees involved. Is there anyone who is willing to volunteer? Thanks to all who read this. Happy Thanksgiving as well. Sincerely, Dona davis069@netex.quik.com formerly at davis069@peoplescom.net

My experience with this group is as described in the later paragraph. They are now sitting on a wealth of information contained in all of the back issues of their quarterly. These back issues would be of great interest to researchers in this county if they were available and prepared for this purpose. If anyone reading this post can help get this information out, [by obtaining permission to do so] please do so. 3. I hope that this is not a "no-no" for the list, but A Clarke County List person that I have emailed to cannot be reached through her email address (Dixie net) and I have information that I know that she wants about her Clarke Sources. The address was good for a couple of emails , but now says that the carrier is unknown, and I used reply rather than entering it myself. If you see this, Brenda Nichols, would you help me contact you? Kathy ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
