Does anyone know for sure if (1) the archives of the Clarke County Democrat can be searched and (2) copies can be made from the papers on file? I think I remember reading somewhere that the archived papers were very fragile. I am looking for some obituaries from the 1860s. Thanks, Nancy Davis Harwood Houston, TX
Hello everybody, I'm trying to trace my roots in Clarke County, Alabama. My Grandfather and Grandmother (x2) were John T. Clark/e and Sara Brooks. This is all I have. If you have a marriage record for these two please let me know. If your researching these Surnames please let me know. I'm basing all this on my g, Grandfather's s.s. application card. Forrest Cadwood Clark/e (my g, grandfather) was born in Grove Hill Alabama on Feb. 27th, 1897 born to the above mentioned people. Any body out there related? Jack
Hello Folks! I am looking for family information on my grandfather James Madison SNOWDEN born May 1878. I have found him in census records in the state of Mississippi from 1900-1920 each say his father (not sure of his name but believe it to have been Madison James SNOWDEN or James Madison SNOWDEN) was born in FL and 2 say my grandfather was born in FL. I do not have much information of them. My aunt once said that Madison James Snowden had the following sisters: Hattie who married a Williams; Mary Walston (helped to raise James Madison) married a Rooney; Mollie who married a Dees (?spelling); Grace who married a Thompson. This same aunt said her great grandpa was J.N. SNOWDEN. I have nothing before the census of Perry/Forrest County, Mississippi 1900 as documentation. Any Help would be welcome. PS:It would be nice to find cousins to visit with at our reunion the June 24,2000 at the McLaurin Community Center, McLaurin, Forrest Co., MS. Patty(Snowden)Herring

Dear Clarke Co. Researchers, I have included on my website those names that are engraved on the Clarke County War Memorial located in Jackson, AL. This memorial is dedicated to those soldiers who gave their lives fighting for their country in the Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. I understand there are plans to have any missing names added at a later date. If your ancestor is not listed, you may send proof of the soldier's death to: Jackson City Hall 400 Commerce Street. Hi to all those descendants of the couple, Ambrose Bryant Hicks and Mary E. Gates of Clarke Co., I am desperately trying to see if somewhere out there has information on the above couple, who are my great grandparents. I am proving my linage through this couple back before 1630 to Capt. William Daniel of Virginia for the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century. I need to prove their birth and death dates. They were buried in the Old Salem Cemetery in Clarke Co., AL. Does anybody have a picture showing their birth and death dates? A photo copy of a picture is fine as long as it clearly shows the names and dates. Also, I need information on their parents. I need James (Jim) Bishop Hicks' death date. James was born 27 Feb 1833. His wife was Sarah Elizabeth Presnall, and I need her birth date and death date. Sarah was probably born in 1835 and died before March 27, 1887 when James remarried, but I need more exact dates. I am seeking the above information and need proof of same. I will certainly share what I have with anyone. Davine Jacksonville, FL
Thanks to Janis for this information. --------- Begin forwarded message ---------- Subject: Re: 1918 Epidemic Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2000 00:42:50 EST The November 1999 issue of Reader's Digest had an article titled "Coming Soon: The Next Great Flu Epidemic," by Rachel Wildavsky. It mentions the 1918 epidemic, although it doesn't spend much time talking about it in the article. It does say "...in less than two years took at least 21 million lives. Three waves of Spanish flu--so named because it was at first erroneously thought to have started in Spain-- swept the globe. Virtually everyone was infected, and up to three percent of them died." It goes on to say, "Geographic isolation was no particular protection. In the Alaska Territory, the mortality in some villages was as high as 90 percent. All told, at least 500,000 Americans perished." The article mentions less than two years to span the globe, but the peak year was 1918, therefore, it is called the "1918 epidemic." I don't know anything about the epidemic in Alabama, but I will try to write my grandmother and ask if she remembers lots of flu that year. She would have been 18 or 19, so she would probably remember if many people in the area were sick. I am not sure if she was living in Womack Hill or in Jackson, AL, about that time. Mr. Smith has added valuable insite on this topic. Thank you for you input. Thanks again to Mr. Mitchell for his additional and detailewd information. Others have expressed interest on this topic, so I am forwarding it the listserves to share. Your support is truly appreciated by everyone. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. C. Davis ------------ I have been studying the Alabama River side some, Gosport to the river cutoff south, without much success or results, just a little general knowledge. Scotch Lumber Company has some logging camp info from the 1880's to 1950 or so. The book "Logging Railroads of Alabama" by Thomas Lawson, Jr., Cabbaage Stack Publishing, P.O. Box 19912 Birmingham AL 35219 has a lot about camp locations but few maps. Clarke County Historical Society publications have several articles on the old salt works. I believe there were more than one. CCHS has a project to make an index and put that and all the articles for the last 25 years on a web site but that is probably at least a year away if it happens. Those quarterly publications are available at several libraries, without an index. ------------ http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ after you find out the sections and townships, then go to Microsoft terraserver for a topographic map or satellite map of the area. http://terraserver.microsoft.com/ It takes some study and work, but it can be done. ------------ > as well as the major industrial works: mines, > salt works, lumber camps, etc.? ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET!
