    1. [ALCHILTO] Need Genealogy Information for Judah Family 1860's Dale County Alabama
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Whadford Surnames: Judah, Ard, Watford, Wadford, Judy Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.chilton/2629/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My name is Nancy L. Compton and my cousin and I have been researching our great grandfather, William Henry Whadford (Watford, Wadford) for years, with no luck. However, that appears to have all changed since a family member submitted DNA to Ancestry.com. A close generational connection match has been made from a direct male-line descendent of our great grandfather to two people with genetics/ancestry to an 1860 Dale County Alabama Judah family. It appears our great grandfather is an actual descendent of an 1860 Dale County, Alabama Judah family with other maternal ties, whether that is Watford/Wadford or another surname. We don't know how he ended up with that common Dale County Alabama Wadford/Watford name with unusual spelling. Of course, Watford/Wadford/Whadford could be a name he chose himself with no genetic link, such as in wardship or adoption. This is where we are stuck. Who possibly is the genetically-linked Judah father and who is possibly the mother of our W! illiam Henry? We would greatly appreciate any information, search direction or Ard-Judah genealogy to help narrow and solve our mystery. Our great-grandfather was supposedly born in Alabama approximately during the Civil War years (1860 to 1865) and the tale told is that his family may have originally come from the Carolina's to perhaps Newton, Dale County, Alabama, where he may have been born. He was orphaned at a young age when his family may have died in a "plague" possibly on a river(house)boat and the story has it he was discovered alone after a couple of days. He was supposedly sent to live with an uncle in Florida, but ran away with cousins when he was a young boy and they ended in Texas. We are unable to confirm any of this information. William Henry is traceable from 1885, Rains County, Texas to Delta County, Colorado where he is buried. William Henry first married M. E. Havens and they produced a son, William Henry Whadford, born in Sulpher Springs Texas. William Henry then married our great grandmother, Sminthie Ellen Matlock on January 14, 1889 in Dewitt County, Texas. The 1900 census of Montgomery County, Texas lists William Henry is a logger (possibly in the San Jacinto Range) and his unknown parents were born in Alabama. The 1910 Delta County, Colorado census lists him as a survivor (dependent?) of the Civil War and that his father was born in Alabama and his mother was born in Florida. The 1920 Delta County, Colorado census lists both his parents were born in North Carolina. The 1930 Delta County, Colorado census lists his father was born in South Carolina and his mother was born in Alabama. Do you have a male born child in your genealogy information that was born on or around 1860 to 1865 Alabama with the given names of William Henry that you have no further information for? Any information is greatly appreciated! Thank you! Nancy L. Compton Compton.nancy@gmail.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He was my ggg grandfather through his son Thomas Calvin. I have Andrew Jackson Jones listed as William Nathaniel's son. I also show an A J Jones listed in 1990 as postmaster of Strasburg, AL which was located just north of present day Lomax, AL. This information is listed in "Chilton County And Her People, A Brief History", by Thomas Eugene Wyatt. This may or may not be your Andrew Jones. I have a copy of William Nathaniel's obit but it does not give a list of all of his children. It only lists Natty J. Jones. The obit lists him buried at Chestnut Creek Baptist Church in Coopers but there is no tombstone with his name. I hope this limited info helps. If you have found more, I would appreciate you sharing. 1. [ALCHILTO] Autauga Genealogical Society Sunday Nov. 20
    2. Caroline
    3. The Autauga Genealogical Society will meet Sunday, Nov. 20, at First Baptist Church in downtown Prattville. Professor Ronald Fritze of Athens State University will speak on “The Hernando de Soto Expedition: Exploration and Tragedy in 16th Century Alabama and the Southeast”. Hernando de Soto's expedition (1539-1543) was the first to explore extensively the interior of the eastern part of North America. It spent a substantial amount of time in what is now Alabama, where there are many places associated with De Soto's expedition. The Southeast on the eve of European contact contained the most culturally sophisticated Native American societies in Northern America. His expedition explored most of the Southeast following a much-debated route. It experienced problems with the Native Americans, spread devastating diseases, and failed to find treasure. De Soto died in 1542 during the course of the expedition, which Luis de Moscoso brought back to Mexico during 1543. Visitors are welcome to attend all AGS meetings.
