Author: RossSmith53 Surnames: Ray Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.chilton/2594.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Mr Dennis, Last year you sent me a reply to my query about descendants of Rev Samuel Ray who died in 1856. I descend from his brother Solomon Ray. There was a Mark Ray also who was their brother. I think possibly they had a sister named Henrietta Ray who married a William Head Jr and I think they might have had a brother named David Ray but I am not sure. You mentioned you thought Sameul Ray's grandfather might have come from England. I have searched for over seven years trying to find information about the Rays. I was able to find that in 1769 George Ray Wray or Ray bought land from a Henry Yarbrough in Burnsiwck co Virginia. He was Samuel Ray's father. A deed where Geroge sold his land in Brunswick co Va said his wife's name was Rachel. They went to North Carolina about 1778. George sold his Warren co NC laned to a John Moore in 1789. He went to Chatham co NC for a while and then to Wilkes co Ga. I found records from the Powellton Baptist Church where he and Rachel attended church there. They went to Jackson co Ga in 1798 and when Clarke co Ga was formed in 1801 from Jackson co Ga his land was then in Clarke co Ga. He went to Jasper co Ga by 1811. The last record anyone has about George was in 1819 when his son Samuel signed George's Clarke co Ga land back over to George. He had asked Samuel to try to sell the land for him but Samuel was not able to sell it so he signed the land back over to George. Samuel went to Alabama in 1819. I do not know when or where George died. I have seen posts that said George's wife was a Cathryn Savage but I know her name was Rachel. When you said you had been told that her name was Savage did you mean a researcher actually told you that or did you mean that you had seen it on the internet. also, I think there is a chance that Rev Samuel Ray's grandfather (father of George) was named William Wray. The name seems to be Wray in Virginia and Ray in NC and also in Georgia most of the time. Would you remember if someone told you George's father was from England or if you read it somewhe3rre on the internet? I can not find any information about George's father so it would be appreciated. You mentioned that you only had a little information about the Rays but that you were not comfortable sharing the info you have. Could I ask you why you don't want to share it. Is there something in the Ray family you found that makes you uncomfortable sharing it because you do not know for sure if it is true? My name is Ross Smith and my email address is rsmith6670@msn.com Which of Rev Samuel Ray's children do you descend from? I am looking for a direct male descendant of Rev samuel ray or of Solomon Ray or their brother Mark Ray for a DNA test which I will pay for. I descend from Solomon Ray (brother of Samuel Ray) and Solomon's son Solomon ray Jr born in Jasper co Ga in 1811 (Solomon Ray died in 1813 in Jasper co Ga). Solomon Ray Jr had a daughter named Lucinda Ray who married a thomas M Abel in Winston co Al. Since Lucinda Ray who was born in Al in 11837 was my great, great grandmother that means I am not a direct male descendant. The DNA test has to be a direct male descendant of George Ray. It will tell which Ray line they were from. It is a very simple test. IF I paid for the test would you take it or if you don't want to would you know a direct male descendant of Rev Samuel Ray who would? Thanks, Ross Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: maryabernathymeyer Surnames: ABERNATHY, HOPPER, GLENN, DUPREE Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.chilton/2622/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My father Thomas Nelson Abernathy (1896-1985) basically had one job all his life: working at the steel mill at Fairfield in Jefferson Co. AL. It closed for several years during the Depression. My parents got married in 1929--just in time for hard times. They moved back to Chilton Co. where my father had been reared on a farm near Verbena and/or Mountain Creek (he walked to school at Marbury in Autauga Co. when he was a schoolboy). [His family moved from Chambers Co. AL to Chilton Co. AL about 1899-1900.] His elderly widowed mother, who was rearing an orphaned granddaughter (whose father had died in the flu epidemic of 1918), lived with them until she (my grandmother) passed away. I think my parents moved back to Jefferson Co. in 1938, but maybe my father wnet back to work at the steel mill in 1937, and my mother and my two young brothers (b 1932 and 1935) were still on the farm. In a letter from my mother to my father postmarked September 28, 1937, she wrote: "Darling, I know you will be so glad to know that the pickers came this morning. Six Negroes, Felix started at three o'clock this morning and got them. I don't see how we can even do without Felix. Mr. Hopper carried off cotton for Mr. Glenn this morning. Guess he will get ours this afternoon." In a letter from my mother to my father dated October 19, 1937, she wrote: "....It poured down rain all day Monday and partly today. Felix got the brick and hauled the pine to the mill. The Dupree's stripped a little cane but had to quit because of rain." Felix Gryder was my mother's nephew who was 17 years old in 1937. What does "got the brick" mean? He bought some bricks? I wonder how much they cost. I suppose that the pine that went "to the mill" went to a sawmill. Where is that site? Where was the cotton gin? Who were Mr. Hopper, Mr. Glenn, and the Duprees? Parenthetically, here's a little historical perspective: "The Great Depression that began in 1929 devastated Birmingham's economy. Production of steel and pig iron shrank to the lowest levels since 1896, and operations at TCI, Republic, Sloss-Sheffield, and Woodward were drastically curtailed. Business leaders fought bitterly against labor reforms enacted under the New Deal, particularly the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, which aimed to raise the wages of southern laborers to the level of their northern counterparts. Labor unions won recognition against strong resistance, but unemployment reached unprecedented levels. "Economic conditions improved as the nation and industries geared up for World War II. U.S. Steel built a large new blast furnace at its Fairfield plant, and the TCI plant was running at full capacity by 1939...." http://www.encyclopediaofalabama.org/face/Article.jsp?id=h-1597 *********** "The Social Security Act was signed by President Franklin Roosevelt on August 14, 1935. Taxes were collected for the first time in January 1937 and the first one-time, lump-sum payments were made that same month. Regular ongoing monthly benefits started in January 1940." http://ssacusthelp.ssa.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/113/~/the-start-of-social-security Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Mitchell Dam is located on Al Hwy 22 East. I would estimate that Mitchell Dam is some 15+ miles or so from the Veterans park. Each dam construction site had it's own village; unfortunately the buildings are no longer there. There are some superintendant's housing that came much later that is still being used at other dams. I had the opportunity to see the last of those at Martin Dam, i.e. the old dance hall and some Super's housing..., on the Tallapoosa before they were destroyed. All that are left at Mitchell are the rock steps/patio on the hillside above the dam. I have the ...."Loafing Streams"... and the Centennial book and took a look in both, but the only buildings that are shown are the infirmary, office, and many construction photos, etc. I did not see any actual village housing. Both books are beautifully done. My husband's family actually lived in the village at Mitchell and his Dad worked for the Co for 40+ years. My husband has followed for another 38+ years in his father's footsteps. I might suggest that you contact Bill Tharp at Alabama Power Company through the website. I have corresponded with him before and he has a wealth of information/history that he would be willing to share I am sure; he is a great historian for the Company. You might also place ads in the local Clanton Advertiser for information from the locals. You never know what is lying in a box in someone's photos.... I wish you well in your journey and discovery. The dam was constructed by the Alabama Power Company and began generating electricity for the region in 1923. The Federal Power Commission, created by Congress in 1920, granted its first license to Alabama Power Company in 1921, permitting it to construct a dam across the Coosa River. The location was downstream from Lay Dam near the town of Verbena at an isolated shoals area on the river called Duncan's Riffle.... "Because the Mitchell Dam site was located in a remote area on the Coosa River, a worker's village had to be built before construction on the dam began. Following the example set at Lay Dam, facilities for workers included living quarters, schools, an infirmary, a dining hall, and recreational facilities. Construction on the dam began in July 1921. Teams of laborers cleared the reservoir lands and rights of way for transmission lines. The effort at Mitchell Dam went more quickly than at other similar Alabama Power facilities because the site had plenty of electricity from the recently completed Lay Dam upstream. Generating units one, two, and three went into service in August 1923. Unit four was added in 1949. Still in place, the first three units were deactivated in 1985 when units five, six, and seven were installed in a new powerhouse below the dam...." Author: maryabernathymeyer Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.chilton/2619.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: http://www.encyclopediaofalabama.org/face/Article.jsp?id=h-2026 "Mitchell Lake and Dam are located in Coosa and Chilton counties on the Coosa River. Still in place, the first three units were deactivated in 1985 when units five, six, and seven were installed in a new powerhouse below the dam...." I can't tell if this picture is a drawing or a photograph. It shows several workmen, so maybe your great-grandfather and/or your grandmother's uncle are in this picture. (I don't know.) Did they serve in World War I? (You might find their names on World War I Draft Registration cards.) You do know they survived the influenza epidemic of 1918 (which claimed the life of one of my uncles). You can buy the following book from Amazon: Alabama Power Company (AL) (Images of America) [Paperback] James L. Noles Jr. (Author) - only four left in stock. http://www.amazon.com/Alabama-Power-Company-Images-America/dp/0738513547 Hope this helps! You asked a fascinating question.
