Dennis, very kind of you to offer---- I'm trying to find any Atkinson that might be shown as a blacksmith. A son, living in Jefferson Co AL in 1900, had that profession, and I know that often they apprenticed with their fathers. Very unlikely the father would be alive in 1910 though. Wish I could give a first name---that's what I'm trying to narrow down (and find out). Thanks, Leslie Hill
Does anyone know if there were any directories (I know this is usually more of a "city" type thing) that might have been published in the 1880's & 1890's that would have listed different businesses in Chilton Co? I am trying to find the names of different blacksmiths in the area. Thanks for any advice. Leslie Hill

Does anyone have access to an 1870 census for Chilton Co.? I am trying to find the name of a head of household, last name Atkinson, who would show a son named William C. Atkinson. A family bible says Wm. was born in Clanton, Chilton Co. The girl he married, Nora G. Poole, was also from there, so I don't have much reason to think the family moved from the area. The problem I've run into is two different dates of birth I've seen, one July 1858, the other, July 1866. If I could narrow down the field in this county for families with a son, either about age 12 or age 4, I can hopefully track which Atkinson line he belonged to. Thank you for any help anyone is willing to give. Leslie Hill
Leslie, I don't have the address but the zip for Clanton is 35045. I would think you could address it to the Probate Judge, Chilton County Courthouse, Clanton, Alabama 35045. Thank you Irma, I do appreciate it. Leslie Hill
Thanks Irma---do you possibly know the actual mailing address for the probate court in Clanton. I can't find it on the "net" anywhere. Leslie Hill
Leslie, If you are taking about the Marriage Record Book published by the Chilton County Historical Society, then it does not show any ages. If you are taking about the actual Chilton County records, there are some that show the age, I just don't remember when the different forms for recording the marriage licenses take place. Possibly some one in Clanton could answer that question. Irma J. Roy At 12:32 AM 8/3/00 EDT, you wrote: >Does anyone know if the marriage records from the 1870's show the bride and >groom's ages, or just the names? > >Thanks, > >Leslie Hill > >
Does anyone know if the marriage records from the 1870's show the bride and groom's ages, or just the names? Thanks, Leslie Hill
Does anyone have the mailing address for the probate court for Chilton Co, I assume in Clanton? I need to order a marriage record from 1887. Thank you for any info. Leslie Hill
I am looking for any information concerning Charles and Nancy Williams who were in the Chestnut Creek area. I have the following information: 1850 Census Autauga Co., AL, Kingston Beat 874 WILLIAMS, CHARLES 56 M METH.E.CLERGYMN 0 SC 61A 874 WILLIAMS, NANCEY 41 F 0 SC 61A 874 WILLIAMS, ROBERT L. 19 M LABORER 0 SC 61A * 874 WILLIAMS, THOMAS M. 13 M 0 SC 61A 874 WILLIAMS, MARY W.P. 10 F 0 AL 61A 874 WILLIAMS, CHARLES F. 4 M 0 AL 61A * I believe that the initial M. is wrong...it may have been a U. instead. I would appreciate any information for this family. Thanks, Liz
I would like to make contact with anyone on this list who may have connections to an Edmund P. Martin and his family who were in Autauga County (the part that later became Baker/Chilton) in the mid 1860s. Edmund P. Martin died in Autauga (later Baker/Chilton) County, June 28, 1867. He was shown on the 1850 Natchitoches Parish, LA Census with the following family members: E. P. Martin, age 49, born in SC Nancy, age 44, born in SC Ruthie, age 22, born in SC H.T., age 19, born in SC Lucinda, age 16, born in SC Rebecca, age 14, born in SC David, age 7, born in GA I can't find Edmund P. Martin on any 1860 Alabama Census. Where was Edmund and his family in 1860? According to probate proceedings in Autauga County...there was also a daughter named Sarah who married a Gibson Freeman and a Mary, who married a Wilson (first name unknown). These two daughters were supposedly in Winn Parish, LA at the time of Edmund's Death. The son, H.T. was Hiram/Hyrum T. Martin and was also in Winn Parish at the time of his father's death. The daughter, Rebecca, married William Littlejohn December 26, 1858. Edmund's wife, Nancy, was related to the Foshees. The youngest son, David, married Frances Elizabeth Foshee. Is there anyone on this list researching this family? I would like to hear from you. Eugenia in Mobile, AL

Originally named Baker County, in honor of Alfred Baker, a prominent citizen, it was renamed Chilton in honor of Chief Justice William Parish Chilton on 17 December 1874. The Chestnut Creek area was Part of Autauga Co. then Baker/Chilton. It is very roughly the area of Clanton and some distance due south. Several of us have been transcribing the 1880 census and the Chestnut Creek area is almost twice the size of any other district. Sadly it is almost entirely illegiable. The Autauga County website has many of the census' online. David Dennis, dddennis@concentric.net, UsGebWeb webpage for Lincoln Co., Ga + Chilton Co., Al, and Rootsweb mailing list owner for them and the SWORDS-L lists, among other things.
That is very sad that it is almost illegible. Especially for us that really need it! Do appreciate the work all of you are doing to help. We could not get anywhere without you. Leslie Hill
Leslie, That part of Chilton County was once part of Autauga County. I believe the line was either just above or just below Clanton before 1868. My ancestors lived at Coopers where the Chestnut Creek Baptist Church is located. Hope this helps. Irma J. Maryellen: If you don't mind, let me know what you have on the 1847 William. "My" William (great-grandfather) was born July 1858 in Chilton Co (per census and family bible), but I can't match who the father would be. I know there was a Dolby Atkinson that lived Chilton Co around the same time, and he had a son named William C., but this one was younger, born abt. 1866. I believe Dolby was born in 1843. No doubt all these guys are cousins, but would like to find "my" line. Thanks for any help----- Leslie Hill LHill42731@aol.com
Irma: You are very kind to check, and this helps me to sort out where I need to be looking in what years (confusing!). Appreciate your time very much. Leslie Hill
