Hi, I think "Polos, Al" should be Palos, which is in Walker County, Alabama, which was a coal mining community. Hope this helps, Peg
Hello Lists and Larry -- Is there someone who plans to go on this tour who would accept a commission to photograph my Billingsley ancestors' grave sites in the Gaines Family Cemetery (Vida)? I believe there's a marker with this inscription: "Clement Billingsley, Ensign VA Militia Rev War, 1754 1844 Cynthia Turner, Wife of Clement Billingsley, 1764-1844" I would love to have pictures of the cemetery entrance, the cemetery as a whole, the area immediately around the marker, and the marker itself. I will happily reimburse expenses, and I will be very, very grateful. Pat Salis, in Houston > -----Original Message----- > From: John K. Hi Barry. There are no death certs. in 1910 but there are some county records as Irma Roy said. There is a transcribed book of the records she mentioned availible locally which I'll be glad to check for you. They are from a variety of sources and the info included also varies. It may be a while before I get to the library and you may need to remind me as I'm very busy at work right now. For everyone, the LDS has very recently aquired the death indexes and the records themselves on microfilm, but they can be difficult to read. The records are not all there there until into the 1920's and they may and may not be there in that time frame. If I ever start another transcription project for Chilton after the 1880 census it will likely be putting an index online for Chilton Co. death records. The book, "Cemeteries of Chilton" shows a Sarah L. Chambers, b. 1862-5-31, d. 1910-2-1 buried at Mount Carmel Baptist. I may have a few more details availible if you write me with what you need I'll look into it. I hate to spend my time typing in info you already have. Barry, Chilton County kept death records in a book from 1908 until 1922. This book is in the Probate Judge's office, Chilton County Courthouse, Clanton, AL. I'm not sure that you can get zerox copies of death certificate information. I understand that they have them now on microfilm and an index to death certificates is available at the Birmingham Public Library. The only place other than Montgomery to get to look at the microfilm is at Wallace State Junior College which is located in Jasper, AL. The people in the probate office in Chilton County are very helpful so I would write to them first. I believe you can find the correct address and zip code on the Chilton County GENWEB page. Irma J. Does anyone frequent the AL State Archives and not mind looking up a death certificate for me? Being from out of state, it appears my only other option is to request a certified copy for $22 which I really don't need; either a photocopy or simply the information is sufficient. I am assuming AL death certificates do indicate parents' names. Thanks for your help. Barry Fox Greenville, SC

Barry, I sent the other one too fast. In the same book, pg 472, Mount Carmel Baptist Cemetery, From Maplesville take US 82 S to Chilton Co. 16, left turn for about 0.8 mile to cemetery on left. Census by Benjamin D. Robert in 1985 and John and Linda Klinner. 10 Nov 1982 Plot # 19, has 14 graves, including these CHAMBERS, Sarah L. 1862-5-31 1910-2-1 CHAMBERS, (Infant) 1907-5-6 1907-5-6 /J.W. & Sarah L. Thanks to everyone who responded about my quest for kin. Apparently, there were several families in the area. Mine has the DIFFENDERFER spelling, since about 1860s, but began as the Dieffenderfers of Union County, PA. If you happen upon a Diffenderfer or a Pitner in your AL travels, please let me know. I know that Maud (Diffenderfer) Pitner (Mrs. D.L. Pitner) was living in Birmingham in 1903, and that Herber Diffenderfer was living in Polos, AL. I believe Clifford Lester Diffenderfer was living in Chicago at that time. My grandfather, Will C. Diffenderfer, homesteaded land in Baldwin County, AL, around 1906. Does anyone know how I'd find those records? Thanks a million. Laura A. in NC

This morning's Clanton Advertiser has the obituary for Margaret Diefenderfer, wife of Milton. It may be seen at the following site: http://www.clantonadvertiser.com/obituaries/10-12obits.html Betty Collins EHGCollins@aol.com
Milton E. Diefenderfer lives at 1710 Glendale Drive, Clanton, AL 35045. He has a sister, but I can not recall her married name at this time. This family was there in the 1930's and probably 1920's. They were often referred to as the Diefs in Clanton. Betty Collins EHGCollins@aol.com
