Subject: Architreats Program Thursday, Jan 16 at noon "Did the Civil War Create A New Southern Woman?" will be presented by George Rable at the Architreats: Food for Thought program on Thursday, Jan. 16th at 12:05 PM in the Ala. Dept. of Archives & History's Milo Howard Auditorium. Rable explores the effects of the war on families and the new roles held by women. Relying on the words of women themselves, this presentation focuses on women's expectations during the War of Northern Agression, as they reacted to wartime events and contemplated the changes in their own lives. Included are stories of women who remained on farms or plantations, volunteered in hospitals, or worked in factories and government offices. Rable compares these new challenges with how women dealt with the problems and sacrifices forced on their families by the war itself. George Rable is the Charles Summersell Professor of Southern History at the Univ. of Alabama. He received his Ph.D. in history from LSU. Rable's research is on the Civil War era and has written numerous books on the subject. The noontime program is one in a series of monthy third-Thursday free lectures at the Archives sponsored by the Alabama Humanities Foundation. Bring a sack lunch: coffee and tea will be provided by the Friends of the Archives.
List members, My Great Grandmother, Rebecca Webb Nix, died about 1911 in Chilton County. My Great Grandfather, Joseph (Joe) Peter Nix, remarried a couple of years later to Catherine Blankenship. He and Catherine had three children: Bessie M. Nix, born about 1915 Jannie F. Nix, born about 1918 Bertha S. Nix, born about 1921 My grandfather and his father were not very close so he had no dealings with his half-sisters. I only discovered their existence through the Census data. What I'm hoping is that one or more of these three women might still be alive. If so, I would love to be able to talk to them about my Great Grandfather. If any of you know anything about these women, I would certainly appreciate it if you would share the information with me. If they have passed on, I'd like to know something more about them so that I can add them to my family tree. Thanks in advance, Jim Nix Birmingham, AL

Hello- I would like to contact anyone on the list that might know something about the Vandiver and Boley families from Shelby County, Alabama. I am sending this message to the Rootsweb lists for counties near to Shelby in hopes that someone recognizes the names below. My great-grandfather was Dr. William Constant VANDIVER, born 1856, son of James L. and Martha Ann Vandiver. He married Clara Iola BOLEY (born 1857) sometime before 1879. They lived in Vandiver, Alabama. Dr. Vandiver went to Mena, Arkansas sometime after 1891. Clara's children were: Lula A. Vandiver (b. 1879, married Edmond Salser). Ida Vandiver (married J. E. O'barr, 15 September 1897). Leila Iola Vandiver (b. 13 Jan. 1889, d. 11 Nov. 1971, married Arthur Lamar Williams). James Clyde Vandiver (b. 16 June 1891, d. 14 November 1940, married Nancy Frances Johnson). James Clyde was my grandfather. I would like to make contact with relatives of William Vandiver and Clara Boley, or anyone that might know some family history. I am also interested in the history of the Vandiver, Alabama area. Thank you, James C. Vandiver
