Carol, No I'm not from Chilton Co. I live in Montgomery now. My father, Robert Sr. was born in Shorter, his father, William Henry, was born in Elmore Co., his father, William Henry was born in the Chestnut Creek area of what was then Autauga Co, later Baker, then Chilton. My g-grandfather Willian Henry-b. 1861-, married Charlotte Baker, daughter of Alfred Baker. Mr. Little recalled a story about Alfred Baker to that you may find humerous. "Old Alf", as he called, was quite a ladies man, and although he was quite wealthy and influential, had a somewhat "shaded" reputation. He had the name of the county named after himself, thus Baker County. When his reputation caught up with him, the only the legislature could undo his naming the county after himself, was to pass a law making it unconstitutional for a county to be named after a living person. That's when it changed to Chilton Co. Some story, huh? I'm trying to contract Mr. Little to lead me to some sources of info in that area. Bobby, I can't help with your line, but thought you might want to know that Baker Co. was formed in Dec. 1868 and was renamed to Chilton in 1874, so all your dates for Baker after 1874 would actually be for Chilton. Dear List members: I am Pam (Hosey) Long, and I'm looking for some Logan relatives. I've already messaged the Logan listserv, but I've had no luck with my query. The question is this: Who was Frances Louise Logan? She married my greatgrandfather Marcus Lafayette Hosey in 1883, and their son Mark Hosey is my grandfather (my father is Mark Hosey Jr.). Does anyone have any information on Frances Louise Logan? Who were her parents and siblings? Where did they live and where did they come from? What religion were they? I know that she is buried at Holly Springs, next to some other Hoseys. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Hi all; There are now 43 members on the list and adding a couple every week. I had thoght it would take 100 at least to make it really effective. I've made one very exciting connection I hope on the list but it wouldn't have happened if I hadn't posted a queiry to the list. I had actually exchanged email with the person before but had not made the connection. If you will post some questions to the list you might also have some luck, if you don't try and keep trying occasionally as the list grows you are limiting the value of monitering the list.I'm working every day right now covering vacations but will do look ups in the books I have access to and will be mailing a lot more people looking to expand the list more to the surrounding counties when I get a break. I'm from several families in Autauga, which means I probably have connections to everyone!! I go to Peter COOPER and Samantha MONCRIEF, dau of Isaac MONCRIEF and Nancy KICKER. Peter and Samantha's son Alphonzo COOPER married Mary Elizabeth BARBER, dau of Green B. BARBER and Sally GOODGAME. Green's parents were Moses BARBER and Mary WESLEY. Alphonzo COOPER's dau Emma Louisa (named for two of her Moncrief aunts) married Newbern Webster ROCKETT. N. W.'s mother was a MORRIS, and her aunt Martha married Singleton POSEY (the "younger") and Peter COOPER's dau Martha Margaret married Singleton POSEY (the "elder"). Except for the MORRISES and the ROCKETTs, who heavily populated nearby Jefferson Co, AL, all of the above surnames were in Autauga county during the 1800's. One of Samantha Moncrief's sisters married a DENNIS and another married a GRAY. I'm looking for the parents of Peter COOPER, Isaac MONCRIEF, Moses BARBER, and Mary WESLEY. I would also be thrilled to find cousins in these lines and would almost give my right arm for some family photos. *********************************** Please visit Rockett's Genealogy Web selected as a Recommended Site by The History Channel http://www.kayrockett.com and also Rockett's Genealogy Books http://www.kayrockett.com/genbooks.htm. David, I would like to volunteer. I'm on WebTV and need to know if there's an onsite editor. I can't do any uploading of info to a site. *********************************** Please visit Rockett's Genealogy Web selected as a Recommended Site by The History Channel http://www.kayrockett.com and also Rockett's Genealogy Books http://www.kayrockett.com/genbooks.htm. If you're in the market for some handknit sweaters, see our site at http://www.ncknitshop.com. ***********************************
The historical society does NOT have the 1870 census for sale. It can be ordered from from the Chilton/Clanton Library, NOT the society. I do not have the Clanton Library's address, but I know one of the people that did extensive work on the book, also has copies available direct. (I verified information before writing E-mail, this time) If you decide you want a copy, you can send the $27.50 for a copy postpaid to: Betty Collins 2387 Lee Road 241 Salem, AL 36874 and she will send you one out very promptly. >>

This work is Copyrighted and also registered in the Library of Congress as catalog card #85-73165. Anyone researching their Chilton County ancestry would find it a very valuable addition to their research tools. It consist of 217 pages in loose bound soft cover and has a wonderful index to take you right where you want to go to find the individual(s) and clues of the children/siblings that normally lived close by each other. So if you are searching for kin that lived in current Chilton County during the 1870 census this is great tool. If you don't want to go to the library and spend all the hours digging out the information and would like to have it on hand for future use as well you can order a copy for $27.50 postage paid from: Chilton County Historical Society Post Office Box 644 Clanton, AL 35046 and help support the work of the local group there, which have existed for many years with legitimate purposes of preserving the history and genealogy of the County for years to come as opposed to the unknown intends and purposes of some of the new groups. In case anyone is wondering, I don't travel to attend any of the group's meetings, but I do support them with by paying a $9 annual membership fee. I have no monetary interest in nor was I involved in the authoring of the book. Fact is I only recently discovered this little publicized treasure myself, 13 years after it's initial printing. Just trying to help. Bruce Glenn Calera, AL
