    3. Thank-you so much Pat. My Larcenia Martin Vincent seems to be hiding !! Betty had found the Vinson/Vincent and Martin families in Chilton in 1870, but not the names I was researching. But there was a J.S. Martin, age 51 (b. GA) with a female that could possibly be a dau., L.J. age 12, in Baker/Chilton 1870. I will have to look on a census and see what the names of the other children are; if there were any. The L could stand for Larcenia. She was born in 1857 or 1858.; in Alabama. I think ( Obediah and Larcenia) could have been married in Alabama. I have been told that the Vincent's/ Vinson's ; older ones; belonged to the Mars Hill Baptist Church. I do know that she has to be buried around there. The last two children were born in or around Clanton. Thank-you again, for forwarding my message. 3. Hi all,I will not be availible for a few days as my cousin Bob Becthtel -- who was the family historian for the J.N.Dennis family (of Chilton Co.,AL) passed away today. I had just found contacts for his line,he had never found anyone with his exact spelling of the surname and had not written him. I feel guilty because I had not written him sooner and knew he was in poor health.Actually had the letter written and could not find the address. Bob was not old by modern standard's (early 60's) don't let you're ancestors get away. I have an 102 year old aunt I intend to see ASAP as a result of this. Back to the subject, Bob was as fine a Christian gentleman as ever walked the earth and will be missed by all who knew him. 3. Hi all,I've just come from the library. I had never figured out how to use the Civil War records before. It appears that almost all the Dennis's that served from the area were in the same unit. The stop before that I was at Samford University where I found the records of Bethel Primitive Baptist Church from 1855 to 1988. The members where in the area of south Clanton to Coopers. There is a list of members that appears to start as a roll of the membership for 1911 and then names are added up until 1988. Unfortunately there are no records of birth, marraiges etc. but there are a lot of death dates recorded. I think ALL my paternal grandparents for 2 or 3 generations back attended this church so I'm very excited. I will do lookups on this until I get it on the webpage (only those I know have passed away). Hopefully I can abstract the whole doc. someday. -- David Dennis dddennis@concentric.net,http://www.concentric.net/~Dddennis/surnames.htm Chilton County UsGenWeb page,http://www.concentric.net/~Dddennis/chilton.htm listowner for ALCHILTO-L mailing list for Chilton and surrounding counties see http://www.concentric.net/~Dddennis/chilmail.htm

    3. Hi, I'm related to many of the families in Chestnut Creek area. I've not worked out many of the relantionship's though. The reference to Verbena and yellow fever was probally the book listed on this page. http://www.concentric.net/~Dddennis/chilvol.htm I had combined several pages which is probablly why you couldn,t find it. Verbena was a summer home to many wealthy Montgomery famlies who came there to avoid the plauges of yellow fever due to the swampy area around Montgomery. The land from just south of Verbena is flat more or less all the way to the gulf and the Alabama River around Montgomery could flood many acres. My Grandmothers first husband was a Martin, most of the Martins I know of early in this century were from Jemison. Sorry I have no info to offer on them. 1. Re: Verbena and Larcenia Martin Vinson/Vincent
    2. There are two cemeteries in Verbena, Verbena Baptist and Verbena City. They are in the book, CEMETERIES OF CHILTON, pp. 385-394. I did not find any Vincent/Vinson/Vinzant nor Martin listed in either. This could be an error in the book, but that is all I can say. I found the Vinson/Vincent and Martin families in Chilton in 1870, but not the names you were researching. There was a J.S. Martin, age 51 (b. GA) with a female that could possibly be a dau., L.J. age 12, in Baker/Chilton 1870. They were four households from J.R. Vinson, age 32 (b. GA) and family. In Wyatt's CHILTON COUNTY AND HER PEOPLE (Clanton, AL; 1960) there is a section on Verbena (pp. 136-37). I am sorry I could not be of more help. Betty Collins = EHGCollins@aol.com

    3. Hi everyone, I sure hope one of you can help me. I have been trying to find my g-grandmother now for quite some time!! Her name was Larcenia (Larceny) Martin born in Alabama around 1857;her father was from Tenn and her mother was from Alabama. She married Obediah Vinson/Vincent ( grandson to Obediah Vincent who lived in Chestnut Creek ) around 1875; I believe in Alabama.( I also believe that she could have been a cherokee or creek indian.) Two of their children were born in Texas- my grandfather Jesse Severe Vinson and George Harmon Vinson ( He owned a restaurant in Clanton- I think early 1900's.) . Their other two children - Elsie Guy Vinson and Frances May Vinson were born in or around Clanton and Verbena- 1892 to 1894. My Larceny did not make it to the 1900 census-; in 1897 Obediah was remarried. In 1912 my g-uncle told people that they were from VERBENA. I looked on the web site for Chilton and saw something about the town of Verbena and yellow fever but when I went back again to read it when I had more time; I couldn't find it. Can anyone tell me about Verbena and does it have any cemeteries there? Also if there is any of you with my Larceny in your family ;please let me know. 1. Alfred Baker of Chilton Co.
    2. I am not a descendant of this family, but will try to give you some info taken from CHILTON COUNTY AND HER PEOPLE by T.E. Wyatt (revised 1975 copy by Carlos W. Wyatt), pp. 113 - 115. "The Baker Family - No other group or family of people played a more important part in the early history of Chilton County than did the Bakers, the first name of the county being taken in honor of one of the members of the family --- Alfred Baker. The history of this family dates back to 1828, when Stephen Baker and his wife, Margaret Popwell Baker, two step-sons, Jim and Ruben Popwell, and two sons. John and Alfred Baker, came from Darlington District, South Carolina and entered land one mile south-east of what is now Clanton, establishing their home at what was later to become the home of Joe Cox and still later the W.Z. Hodges place. Alfred Baker was an infant when the expedition was made. Two more sons were born after the family arrived in the new home -- Stephen and Anderson Baker. There were five daughters -- Sallie Mims, Mahala Mims, Susie Mims, Emily Headley Mims Gragg, and Eleander Aldridge. ...... [John Baker, the eldest son's info] Alfred Baker, born in Darlington District, SC, March 16, 1828, was only six weeks old when the family arrived in Alabama. He married Rebecca Ann Mims, and seven children were born to them, one of whom was the late Alfred Baker of Clanton and Walnut Creek Communities. After the death of his first wife he married Polly Moates, and to them were born two sons -- Amos and Cary Baker. Alfred bought land where Clanton is now located from Joseph Williams and heirs, Tom and Newton Williams and Mrs. Bill Adair. On this land he later supervised the laying out of the Town of Clanton, assisted by the Government Surveyor, George W. Floyd. .... [more info on Alfred's accomplishments] In 1892 he removed his family to Indian Territory and there for one year. He returned to Clanton and died here three years later, on February 9, 1896. The remains were buried in Clanton Cemetery." There is a picture of John Baker, Sr. (Alfred's father) on p. 112 and Alfred's picture on p. 114. According to the 1870 Census of Baker (now Chilton) Co., p. 17 (199): Alfred Baker - 42 - Merchant - b. SC Rebecca A. - 40- AL William S. - 14 - AL Alfred - 11- AL Rebecca A. - 9 - AL Letty M.D. - 7- AL Charlotte - 3 - AL Laura - 1 - AL Next door: Mary Moates - 33 - AL Wm. - 13 - AL Thos. - 11 - AL Amos - 2 - AL His marriage to Mary A. Moates on 12 Apr 1877, Chilton Co., is recorded in Marriage Bk. 2, p. 49. Hope this helps. Elizabeth J. "Betty" Collins = EHGCollins@aol.com Hope this helps some.
