I'm impressed that you are using Ancestry! I only wish we knew more. I worked on this line a lot a few years ago trying to find the Cherokee connection. It's very difficult if you don't know their Native American name. I also talked to Deloreis quite a bit, but that was probably ten years ago before her husband died. John Lawson was married first to a Catherine Works, who died about 1851, then he was remarried to Harriet Ann Poole. I found a will for his former sister-in-law Elizabeth Works, and it states that John Lawson was deceased (by 1868). Terah was born in 1863, so his death would be in that time frame. He may have died in the Civil War, but I have never found him on any records. I am also of the mind that he was Cherokee, rather than Harriet. I'll email you directly!
