Coker, Jr. and Thomas Daniel brought to jail here a negro, an escaped convict, by the name of Warner Findley. The negro stated that he had formerly lived in Jacksonville, Calhoun county, Alabama; that he had been sentenced to the penitentiary from that place for stealing a watch. He and a number of other convicts were put to work on the South & North Railroad at Helena in February or March. About the 1st of May, he in company with eleven others, one black and ten whites, escaped from Helena. The negro states that the ten white men made a rush at the guards, three in number and overpowering them, captured their arms. One of the convicts by the name of James Smith shot one of the guards. The shot man is in a dangerous condition. The negro above mentioned was captured in the mountains in vicinity of Little River. John Long, who some time since, killed a man by the name of Taylor in DeKalb county, was and is the principal leader of the crowd. When the squad were going up the mountain, Long and Smith said they would die before they were captured, so the negro prisoner says. He also says that the squad are desperate men. The squad also said they would take up quarters on the Lookout Mountain, 20 miles from Chattanooga, where they were confident they could not be found. The negro further says that on Thursday night, instant, some of the crowd broke into a house about one mile from Attalla, in Etowah county and stole some bed quilts. The negro was captured about dark on last Monday evening. He was sentenced to the penitentiary for two and one-half years...."
