My Oneal ancestor (Gilbert) came to Cherokee County from Johnston County, North Carolina around 1835, probably simultaenously to my Hickman ancestor (Josiah) who came from Hall County, Georgia. Josiah was married to Mary/Molly Whorton and it appears that the Whortons and Hickmans migrated together. Gilbert Oneal married Josiah's daughter Elizabeth about 1836. All of these families settled in the community that was to bear the Whorton name. The land on which the Friendship Baptist Church stands allegedly was a 5-acre donation from the Oneals's 80 acres. Gilbert did not live long - he died about 1842 and Elizabeth married widower John C. Lewis. She had Oneal children and Lewis children. I am interested in corresponding with anyone researching any of these lines.
