I am still looking for information on the TANNER family of Cherokee Co., AL. John TANNER was born 1820 in GA, he married Rona (unknown). On Nov 1, 1851 purchased 40 acres in Cherokee Co, AL.. He had the following children listed on the 1850 census for Cherokee Co. Elizabeth b 1840 Wiley b 1842 Silas b 1844 William b 1848 Silas was my ancestor. I believe he married Sarah Adeline JOHNSON in 1860 in Polk Co., GA. In 1864 I believe he enlisted in the Union Army in Rome GA just before the fall of Atlanta. Two months later he was reported as a deserter. I have not found him on the 1870 census, anywhere, but believe he may have been in Cherokee Co. I believe he died Oct 24, 1875 but do not know where. In 1896 Sarah tried to file for a Union Widows pension in Parker Co., TX but it was denied because of his status as a deserter. That is the death date she reported. In 1900, Sarah was back in Al in Calhoun Co. Sarah is on the 1880 Cherokee Co census with the following children: Frank N b 1862 John Thomas b 1864 (July 4, 1862 according to grave marker) married Joanna JOHNSON. Buried in Talladega, Co. Fannie b 1867 Ben (Benjamin Franklin?) b 1870 Died in GA, buried in Talladega Co. William b 1872 Samuel b 1875 Would love to hear from anyone with information on ANY of these folks.
