Does anyone have any info. on Echols families that live in Cherokee Cty. around 1860 before or after. I am researcher black Echols families who were slaves before Emancipation. Trying to find their owners and etc; Thanks for any help.
Debbie, My 3rd great grandfather was William Salter (1740-1843). His wife was Sarah Holman. They has a son William Salter born 1814. He died between 1876 and 1880.The son was married twice. He had 4 children with his first wife. I have not found who she was. He married a second time to Lavisa ( ? ) and they had 5 children. He had a son William D. with the first wife and a son William B. with the 2nd wife. They went to Crawford Co., Tx where William SR.died. Lavisa remarried 25 Dec 1884 to John B. Reynolds. What connection did William Salter have with research? I will be extremely interested to know. Thank you. ---------Peggy ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <ALCHEROK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, January 08, 2009 5:26 PM Subject: Re: [ALCHEROK] W. E. James and Frances Arrington also live 2 doors down (householdd 17). Etta Nelson was my great grandmother from Wm. T Smith's 2nd marriage. I don't know what happened to Everlin Henson after her 3rd child but I have all Wm. T and Everline's children's death certificates listing them both as parents. Jesse and Emma (arrington) adopted 2 children. James moved to Calhoun Co. and the 3rd son, Willia mmarried Mamie McCurdy but I don't have much on that marriage. There is a woman (Waldrop) in Cairo Ga. she is elderly but has some information from her husband's genealogy (Waldrop), she told my cousin that they are related to our Smith's. Daisie Pearl's headstone states that she is the daughter of J.M. and N.J Smith. I do not have any confirmation that this is the daughter of my James and Mary due to the N.J. and the dates. I have included her in my tree tentatively until I can prove her ancestry. If you have any info on the Waldrops or Thompsons maybe we can make a connection thru them. I did find Eveline Henson with her parents on the 1870 census and she is listed as 18. I also found Thomas and Etta on the 1910 census. The 1900 and 1910 census show Jesse Smith married to Emma Smith and they have no children. Maybe this will assist you with those names until we can make a better connection that your Thomas is my great uncle Thomas. I hit my brick wall with Their father Wm. Thomas Smith. I know that he was born in 1854 even though his marker engraved 1840-1915. Daisy wasn't sure since she placed it long after his death. Wm. was married 2 times. Eveline Henson bef. 1875, then he married Mary Etta Nelson in 1893. He went by Wm in the first marriage with 3 children, Jesse, James, and Will. from the 1900 and up he went by Tom. and Thos. I am 100% sure it's the same person because my mother rememberd her Uncle Jesse and his wife Emmer. I have no record of Wn T death other than the marker and I know that his wife was widow 1920 census. Also he signed his daughter's permission to marry in 1915. Somewhere in there is a piece to my puzzle. Wm T and Etta are burried at the Arrington Church Cemetery. Al. as is his 3 sons and their wives. I have documentation stating he was born in Bartow Co. Ga (Cass). Can't find him there either. Believe it ! or not I've been doing this for 13 years and can't get past Wm. T. on the Smith side for actual documentation of birth or death. Cherokee County AL census for 1860 shows William H., Nancy, James Jr. and Thomas C. b. @1855 and Mary GREEN age 88. The Thomas in that census may be the same one. Names/ages/birth places tended to be different in different census years which is not unusual. James Sr. and Easter as well as 3 of their grandchildren are buried in the Hebron Methodist Cemetery Cherokee County Al. I also believe that there may have been 3 (2 males, 1 female) other children born between 1834 and 1840 based on the 1840 census, but they could have been nephews/nieces as it also showed them living with Mary GREEN who was enumerated just above James Sr. Thomas C. was not li! sted with the family in the 1870 census, but he certainly could have already left the family and married or been living with other relatives. Jane married a Thomas THOMPSON in 1854 and their children were the ones listed in the will. I have information on none of these people except what the will indicated and have been researching for them. Nancy married Charles BELL and had three children, Raymond, Laura and William. Laura's family moved to Texas as did James Jr's family around 1901/2. I believe Raymond and William may have stayed in the Al./Ga area as did Nancy and Charles. James Jr. was married to Mary Martha Josephine "Emma" YANCEY (she used all of these names) in Polk County GA then moved to AL and they had 11 children.
