There are several versions of Hardy in Itawamba County and Lee County ,Miss.you might go there and look. Doug In a message dated 5/15/2009 12:11:38 P.M. Central Daylight Time, lrtate@comcast.net writes: In 1860 Henry Hardy, 20, SC, is living with the family of Wade H. and Maria Parker in All Saints Parish, Horry District SC, Conwayboro post office, census page 69. There's a 35 year old Henry Hardy in the village of Conwayboro, Kingston Parish. Note regarding the 1870 census results I reported earlier. The child's name Melchisedek is found a few (very few) other times between 1840 and 1901 in other states and in England. Henry Hardy, 59, born Aug 1840, SC SC SC, is found in the 1900 Cherokee County AL census, Sterling beat, with wife Ollie, 40, born April 1860 GA GA GA. They have been married 20 years and their 6 living children (of 8 born) are with them. This indicates that Henry's second wife died about 1880 and he remarried shortly after since all their children are less than 20. I checked the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors (CWSS) database for any soldiers named Henry Hardy/Hardee/Hardie who enlisted in SC, but found none. There were, however, three from GA. There was also a W.H. Hardy, possibly from Horry County SC, in the.... 1st Regiment, South Carolina Infantry (McCreary's) (1st Provisional Army) 1st Infantry Regiment, Provisional Army completed its organization at Richmond, Virginia, in August, 1861. Most of the officers and men had served in the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, a six-month command, which was mustered out of service in late July. The men were from Charleston and Columbia, and the counties of Darlington, Marrion, HORRY, Aiken, and Florence. Assigned to General Gregg's and McGowan's Brigade, the unit fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor. It was then involved in the difficult Petersburg siege north and south of the James River and the Appomattox Campaign. This regiment lost 20 killed and 133 wounded during the Seven Days' Battles, had fifty-three percent disabled of the 283 engaged at Second Manassas and Ox Hill, and had 4 killed and 30 wounded at Sharpsburg. It sustained 73 casualties at Fredericksburg and 104 at Chancellorsville, then lost thirty-four percent of the 328 at Gettysburg. There were 16 killed, 114 wounded, and 7 missing at The Wilderness, and 19 killed, 51 wounded, and 9 missing at Spotsylvania. On April 9, 1865, it surrendered with 18 officers and 101 men. The field officers were Colonels Maxey Gregg, Daniel H. Hamilton, and Charles W. McCreary; Lieutenant Colonels T. Pinckney Alston, Andrew P. Butler, Edward McCrady, Jr., Washington P. Shooter, and Augustus M. Smith; and Major Edward D. Brailsford. Missed a possibility in my earlier posting. There was an H. Hardee in the 15th Battalion, South Carolina Heavy Artillery (Lucas') 15th Heavy Artillery Battalion was organized at Charleston, South Carolina, in November, 1861, with three companies, later inceased to five. It served in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and was active at Fort Sumter and on Morris and James Islands. In 1865, assigned to A. Rhett's Brigade, the unit fought as infantry in the North Carolina Campaign and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. Major J. Jonathon Lucas was in command. There were also two W.H. Hardee's in other units. I was unable to locate Henry in the 1850 census, but suspect that he is listed under another first name, such as W.H.
