    3. I think I may have found a relative on the list of "Indians, halfbreeds, quarters, and Intermarried" list for Cherokee county 1835, i.e. John Williams of Valley River with 6 members in the family. Does anyone have any more information on this family? Is this the Indian Trader? Would "Valley River" be "New River" or something else? Also, I believe another relative, John Large, may have been a signer on a Cherokee government document of 1865 that was trying to set up the newly formed government as a "republic". I found a census that says he was in Tusquitee, but can find nothing more to help establish that I have my John Large and not any other, say a middle initial or spouses name. Any help would be appreciated?

Especially the first name Bird. My grandfather was Bird Fleming and no relation to the Tracy's except through his wife, my grandmother, who was a Wood. No one ever knew why he was named Bird and we just assumed it must have been a connection to Bird Tracy who we call Gilbert. Two strange things with this. 1 Gilbert (Bird) Tracy could possibly be a brother to William but how did he get the name Bird? 2 My grandfather Bird was born at Jamestown 1893 and the family migrated down to Taff and Round Mountain. Both places no longer exist. Round Mountain is under the lake and there is no evidence that the Taff community was ever there except for maps. There are at least two large old cemeteries at Jamestown. At what was Taff I know of two more from the era. One I think might be called Coffee/Garrett not to be confused with the Garrett Cemetery in Centre the other might be Daniel or Little Rive! r. On a side note when my grandfather was drafted into WW I the Selective Service changed his name to Bert saying Bird wasn't name Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Not sure how I missed it before. This indeed may be a very good lead. If you would email me off-line and let me know any sources or speculation you might have for this theory I'd appreciate it. Unless William & Moses' sister Mary Jane was much younger than them, it's unlikely that my Mary Jane is their sister as mine would have been born about 1851. You need to supply DOB's birthplaces for all those listed. FYI - General Information - 1880 census Colorado was the only state admitted to the Union between 1870 and 1880, bringing the total to 38 states. Eight territories were enumerated: Arizona, Dakota, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Washington and Wyoming territories. Unorganized Alaska was enumerated, but the "Indian Territory" was not enumerated for non-Indians. Unlike any previous censuses, after microfilming, the original 1880 census schedules for several states were transferred from the National Archives to various state archives, state libraries, or universities libraries. Only the original 1880 schedules for Pennsylvania remain at the National Archives. Several originals were later transferred to the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C.
