Thank you. However, since posting that I have found early census records of Albert living in AL as young as 6. He did, however, move with his mother and brother across the county line to Floyd County, GA between the 1860 and 1870 census. I've also found some census records stating his birthplace was in AL and others claiming GA. I believe his father's name was William and his mother's name was Phebe. It looks like he moved back to Cherokee county by the 1880 census and was working as a laborer in a household by the name of Farmer. Then I find him again later in the 1900 census married to a Sallie with children in Cherokee County. I'm pretty sure this is all the same Albert that fathered my great grandfather Hershel. The mystery I'm try to solve now pertains to Sallie. Was she his first wife and married Sarah later? Or are Sallie and Sarah the same person? Either way I'm interested to find out their maiden names. My great great grandfather was Albert Pruitt. All I can tell is that he married a Sallie and later records show him married to a Sarah. I'm not sure if they're the same person or if he later married. I've also found records that show he was born in GA as well as evidence showing he was born in AL. I THINK he at some point worked as a tin peddler in GA before moving to Cherokee County, AL. Ultimately I'm trying to find out if there is any Cherokee blood in the Pruitt line. Family lore says there is. I believe he was born ca. 1858. Any help is much appreciated. 3. Can I ask a question? May I know you resource for your statement I have moved to below this: " Indian (Native American) woman married a white man was considered white and and so were her children" Since NC has the Cherokee Indian Reservation, I am assuming (and that may be a mistake) this is Cherokee you are talking about. delilah ----- Original Message ----- From: <jmdgenealogy@yahoo.com> To: <alcherok@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 28, 2010 7:31 PM Subject: Re: [ALCHEROK] cherokee named bigfoot Yes, some did hide and passed as white. In North Carolina some hid in the hills to avoid going on the Trail of Tears. If found they were forced on the trail anyway. An Indian (Native American) woman married a white man was considered white and and so were her children. If an Indian (Native American) man married a white woman, she was considered Indian along with her children. Many did pass themselves off as white because Native Americans could NOT be land owners.
