Author: pinson1 Surnames: Sewell, Smith Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.cherokee/2704.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Tamara, What are you looking for? Elizabeth Sewell Smith was a sister of my 4th great grandmother Dicey Amanda Sewell Dearman (1825-1850). Elizabeth was born in either North Carolina (probably Moore County?) or Georgia (probably Hall County?). Parents are Isaac & Rebecca Sewell. Isaac can be found on the 1820 Moore Co., NC Census; 1827 Gerrard District in Hall County, GA (1827 Land Lottery); 1830 Hall Cou., GA Census. Sometime between 1838-1840 he moved from Hall Cou. to Cherokee Cou., AL, where he died in Jan 1850 of pneummonia. In her Southern Claim Petition (June 7,1872, Howell's Cross Road, Cherokee Co., AL)Southern Claims Commission)), Rebecca Sewell Odell (2nd husband) named "Elizabeth age about 48" as one of the 18 children she had with husband Isaac Sewell. Eight were deceased. Nicole Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [ALCHEROK] Oneal, Hickman, Lewis, Whorton Families
    2. Sharon Moody
    3. My Oneal ancestor (Gilbert) came to Cherokee County from Johnston County, North Carolina around 1835, probably simultaenously to my Hickman ancestor (Josiah) who came from Hall County, Georgia. Josiah was married to Mary/Molly Whorton and it appears that the Whortons and Hickmans migrated together. Gilbert Oneal married Josiah's daughter Elizabeth about 1836. All of these families settled in the community that was to bear the Whorton name. The land on which the Friendship Baptist Church stands allegedly was a 5-acre donation from the Oneals's 80 acres. Gilbert did not live long - he died about 1842 and Elizabeth married widower John C. Lewis. She had Oneal children and Lewis children. I am interested in corresponding with anyone researching any of these lines. Howard Gilbert Smith is close to the same name as Howard L & in same county. I suppose that might be the one. We are looking for the father of William K Smith (born c.1808 - d1891) who lived in Cherokee & Etowah counties. One researchers grandfather made notes that William K Smith's father was Howard L Smith. We are just trying to confirm it. Hopefully, someone who knows who H L Smith on the Cherokee census will respond & confirm if he is the same or different person. I found the marriage records for William Smith & Sarah Easterling Beaird several months ago. I have copies of the original marriage log from Walton co. courthouse.
