    3. OK, that is Kilby Prison, what census page did you find it, did it say how long he had been there, and the prison he would of been sent to in AL, when he was sentenced, so if he was 31, then he would of been born around 1849 - can you check the 1850 census and see if he shows up as age 1 or so - delilah ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <ALCHEROK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 26, 2010 3:37 AM Subject: Re: [ALCHEROK] Looking for a Murderer > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: ltate29 > Surnames: Long > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.cherokee/2711.1/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Found John Long, 31, b TN, widower, farmer, in the 1880 AL census in the > state penitentiary in Wetumpka, Elmore County, AL. > > Important Note: > The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Walker County, Ga and Dade County, Ga., are located on each side of the lookout mt hiway, one is on one side, the other is on the other side, and if he was extradited back to Alabama, then the murder occurred in Alabama, else he would of been tried in Georgia, that is a capital offense, therefore a felon, and tried in the state it occurred, Dekalb County, Al. is on the AL side of where Dade & Walker Counties are in Ga., the prison for men who were felons was Kilby Prison, around Elmore Cty or the one in South Al., (forget the name) down around the Creek Nation area - and there is now Hamilton Prison in NW AL, but it is more for those prisoners that are old, so it is possible if he died in a prison, he was sent to Hamilton - do you have a year of the murder or date of the trial or any dates - it probably was some time between the murder and then the conviction - do you know how the murder occurred - there was a tree in Walker County, Ga that was called the "hanging tree" and people would hang people on that tree, it was murder - I have not heard of a Cassandra in Walker County, Ga., perhaps it was her name, but why did he surrender to a female, in that time frame? If you can get the date of death for BLEVINS, then you got more to start with, surely there are newspapers and/or court records that can be connected to that name - delilah evans ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <ALCHEROK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 25, 2010 7:19 PM Subject: [ALCHEROK] Looking for a Murderer > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: Gerald_Hodge > Surnames: > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.cherokee/2711/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > Ladies and Gentlemen, > > I am looking for a murderer! However, as luck would have it, the Library was closed that day so no resource for searching. I did however, along with my GPS and good navigator (wife), locate the cemetery where both my GGgrand parents are buried. It is about 20 miles from Centre and is listed as Gaylesville. However, my records show Broomtown to be the location. So which is correct? The location is Mount Bethel Free Will Baptist church near where county road 41 and 99 intersect. My ancestors lived there from around 1850 until their deaths in 1870 and 1882. My GGgrandfather served in the 19th Alabama Infantry CSA and was a member of the Masonic bodies. My direct line is not Nichols, but the Doss family of early Jackson Co., GA. One of the contemporary marriages in that county with my John P. Doss to Nancy W. Beauchamp is that of Milly Doss to Archibald Nicholds, 6 May 1814. I think they were in Henry Co., GA, 1830, next door to Levi Beauchamp who was thought to be my Nancy's brother. By 1840 Archibald Nichols has moved to Cherokee Co., AL, enumerated next to T. C. Nichols (son?). I'm not actively researching the Nichols bunch, but wouldn't mind filling in more on Milly Doss Nichols. Anyway, thought this would give you a clue (if you haven't found it by now). This came to me word of mouth from my sister, about six years ago, after she spoke with an Oklahoma family member on the phone. She was told that (and this is very vague to me ) mitochondial dna had been obtained from my great aunt's (nancy ann's daughter carrie etta, i believe) son who had been a Korean war hero (?How did the just happen to obtain it all those years later?) and that it indicated Carrie's and my grandmother Ruth's mother, Nancy Ann Grubbs was full-blooded Cherokee. This was a big surprise to the family and everyone got a kick out of it. Now I will back track and try to get something more official for you.
