FOR YOUR INFORMATION - The Heritage Book series are a compilation of articles written by genealogical societies and individuals usually still living in that county who want to remember their families. They have articles regarding churches, businesses, schools, town founding, etc. They also have articles regarding certain families which are usually in alphabetical order. The index is just an index of the last names of the people who are written about or mentioned in the articles. It does not list first names. When you go to look for a certain individual, you might have to read a whole page (fairly small print) to find a name on the page. I have written separate e-mails to those people who requested that I check their family names. If you are interested in buying this book, you can write Heritage Publishing Consultants, Inc., P. O. Box 67, Clanton, Alabama 35046, or call 1-800-568-1611. They are fairly expensive, but if you have a lot of information in the book, it may be worth buying. This is one book that I will buy at a later date (as soon as I get up enough money), because it is filled with information on my Stewart/Akin/Johnson family. I will be going to visit various courthouses and libraries in the future and will let you know where and when I am going. Mary E. Davis
I promised a number of people on this list that I would do some research in the Cherokee County book when I went to the library, but had to get my car fixed today instead - a $250 repair. I will try to make it to the library tomorrow. As I said before, the heritage series of books have an index which only gives the last names. If there are a number of these, I will let you know how many. If there are any full pages of your family, I will also let you know that and get you an address where you can buy the book if you want. If there are just a few listings, I will copy them for you. I did the same thing yesterday in the Saint Clair County book and there were lots of entries. These books have many names. Some are in by section and some are just brief mention. I'll let you know what I find tomorrow. Mary Davis

Everybody researching in Cherokee County or Calhoun County: After locating the Heritage books of these two counties today and mentioning on the web, I have received quite a few requests from people wanting me to check the books for them. I will be doing this on Wednesday, October 20. If there are any persons who would like to give me more names to look for, just get them to me by next Tuesday. I will probably leave home early Wednesday morning to do this research. If your names are mentioned a large number of times, I may not have time to check all pages, but will let you know how many pages are involved. If the names are just mentioned two or three times, I will check for you and get back to you on Thursday or Friday of next week. Mary E. Just saw today the Heritage books for Cherokee and Calhoun County. They are good and have many names in them. I saw these at St. Clair County Historical Society at the Asheville Court House. I'm going back in a week or two to study them some more. If you don't have access to these, I would be glad to look some names for you, but they are listed by surnames only. Some surnames have many pages, i.e. Johnson, which is one of my names. I will be looking at all those pages and also for Stewart, Akin and Bennett. Mary E. The 1850 census for Benton County, AL lists two Holly families and a Ponder family living next door to each other. One Holly family is that of (John)Mitchell Holley and wife Sarah (Morgan).Mitchell was b 1787 SC and Sarah in 1805 SC.Their children were: Benjamin b 1827 TN Lindy b 1832 TN Elizabeth b 1834 AL Dirinda b 1836 AL Amaziah b 1839 AL Mary b 1841 AL Barthey b 1843 AL(female) The other Holley family next door was that of John Holley whom I suspect was the oldest child of Mitchell and Sarah.John was b 1825 in SC and his wife Louisa(Elizabeth Hogan) was b 1826 in GA. Their children were Frances b 1847 and William b 1848 both in AL. The other neighbor family was that of Nathaniel Ponder b 1805 SC and wife Dirinda Holley Ponder b 1804 in SC. The fact that Mitchell had a daughter also named Dirinda indicates to me that this older Dirinda and Mitchell were siblings. The children of Nathaniel and Dirinda Ponder were: Malachi b 1827 SC Sarah b 1828 TN Nathaniel b 1838 AL William Meredith b 1841 AL(my GGGF) Harriett b 1843 AL James b 1845 AL Nancy b 1847 AL Nathaniel Ponder was in McMinn County, TN in 1830 while Mitchell Holley was inMonroe County, TN. Those two counties border on each other. Nathaniel is listed in Benton County, AL in 1840 as Nathaniel "Pounder". Mitchell Holley is on the same page. I would guess the two families came to Benton County together. The migration of the family from SC to TN to AL can be traced by way of the children's birth dates and places. There was also a John Ponder in the 1830 census and in an 1832 tax roll in McMinn County, TN. Could this have been Nathaniel's father? John disappeared after that. Could he have died which thus allowed Nathaniel to leave TN for AL? Any information on the Holleys and Ponders from earlier times will be gratefully accepted. Boice Burns Houston, TX
The 1850 census for Cherokee Couinty, Alabama shows the following two Haygood families. Can anyone tell me if and how they were related? William(Bradford)Haygood b 1809 SC Matilda (Cooper)Haygood b 1809 SC James " 1835 GA Susan " 1837 AL Thomas " 1840 AL Wesley " 1842 AL Nancy " 1844 AL Sarah " 1846 AL George " 1848 AL The other Haygood family in that same county in 1850 was as follows: Aaron Haygood born 1805 GA Mahala Haygood 1811 GA George " 1834 GA Martha " 1836 GA Richard " 1840 GA Benjamin " 1843 AL Nancy " !847 AL Stokely " 1850 AL How were these two Haygood families related. There is information that William Haygood came fromHabersham County, GA.It appears that William left GA ca1835 but Aaron did not leave for another five years(ca1840).Were these two men brothers? I have information on Williams family but is there anything on Aaron's? I would like to contact any of Aaron's descendants. Boice Burns Houston, TX
