    2. Gregory R. Aymond
    3. On the Family Tree Maker Census Index CDs for 1810 and 1820, I ran across a John and a Richard CLARK, which shows that they resided in, instead of a county in Alabama, "Cherokee Nation Lands". Obviously, that was not a county, and was still owned by the Cherokees at that time. I was unable to find them on the actual Alabama Censuses for those years, and FTM was unable to tell me their source for those entries. Does anyone know where I could find this info.? If these 2 Clarks resided on Cherokee Lands, why did the Census taker go onto those lands and include them in the U.S. Census? Were there White settlers on Cherokee Lands in 1810-1820? Thanks for any info. or suggestions... Gregory R. Aymond Alexandria, Louisiana

    3. Mark, You might want to try death certificates for his widow and/or any of his children. They usually have the name and birthplaces of parents and some have the name of spouses, even if desceased. There is a set of microfilm containing an index (for AL from 1908 forward) one can search for the vol and page number for the certificate. A lot of the larger libraries have the index set (Huntsville, Gadsden, Birmingham, Wallace College are a few). Then one can order the microfilm to view the actual certificate from the LDS. Wallace College at Hanceville has a set of these microfilm. Hope this helps, Melba -----Original Message----- From: Mark <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Friday, January 28, 2000 8:23 AM Subject: [ALCHEROK] William Wood -- Rebecca Niblet >Dear Friends, > I succeeded in locating my maternal great-grandfather, or rather his widow, in the 1900 Alabama census, Cherokee County, Tecumseh Precinct #3. 3. Sorry if this is a 2nd posting, had a bit of trouble with my email address. It's been a while since I've posted any information. The Carden/Cardon side has filled out a lot, thanks to help from these lists, and the project at http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ You can see our whole tree at: http://www.lightpatch.com/genealogy/paf and other info and pictures and documents at: http://www.lightpatch.com/genealogy/ One interesting individual is Hugh Walker Cardon, because he was born as Carden. We don't know why he changed the spelling from "e" to "o". Many of these people lived in or moved to Alabama, and a large part of our background is in Cherokee County, specifically Centre, Alabama. The Battles side (my father) really could use some help. There seem to be lots of us, but we haven't established a good connection yet. The Kenners go back to the 1500s, and we actually have good connections to the Smiths. We'll gladly share what information we have. 2. S.J.
    3. -----Original Message----- From: Family Tree Finders [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, January 21, 2000 1:04 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Family Tree Finders Friday January 21, 2000 FAMILY TREE FINDERS Friday - 21 January 2000 A Reader's Question - Accuracy of FamilySearch Databases Q: Recently I have been told by a genealogist that the majority of the files that the LDS holds is wrong...and not to trust them. The person that told me is a respected person of our town so I really don't doubt him, but wondered what you thought as well. -- Stacie A: The "files" that you are referring to appear to be those computerized databases available through the FamilySearch system. I want to differentiate between the computerized databases and the other records available through the Family History Library and therefore through its branch Family History Centers. FamilySearch has taken the International Genealogical Index, Ancestral File, and some other databases and made them available on CD-ROM. In the past most of these databases were only available on fiche. When working with the fiche versions, it was necessary to know a lot more about an ancestor to effectively search these databases. Ancestral File was not available until the CD-ROM version. Many people think that it is the responsibility of the Family History Library to verify all information submitted to them for inclusion in their databases. They feel that the FHL should not release information in the Ancestral File or other databases without validating it. While this would be wonderful, we are not living in a perfect world. Submissions to these databases are done by individuals. Some of these people are like you and I in their interest of tracking down their family history. Others are motivated for purely religious reasons. Regardless of why they are submitting the information, the reality is that they are human. Just as you and I are capable of making mistakes, likewise so are these individuals. And in some cases, in their zest to share the information, they have not yet verified what they have found before submitting it. The FamilySearch databases offer genealogists wonderful tools. And that is the key word - tools. Any time you are working with an index, compiled record, or published family history you need to remember that you are working with secondary sources. It is important to take the information found in such databases and verify it in primary documents, such as vital records, census records, and cemetery records. I feel that the databases available through the Family History Library are no better and no worse than other secondary records. In some cases, such as the records in the IGI that have been entered through the extraction program, they are very accurate. And by fully understanding the resources and how to understand the origin of the entries, you will begin to understand which ones may be suspect and which ones are accurate. Rhonda R. 1. [ALCHEROK] Fwd: Update on Floyd County, GA Heritage Book
    2. D. Scott Dingler
    3. Update on Publication of Floyd County, GA Heritage Book... The final proofing of "The Heritage of Floyd County, GA" was mailed on January 15, 2000. We are looking for a late January or very early February publication. The Floyd County Heritage Book Committee is very excited about this book...especially considering we have volunteered a lot of time over the past year and a half helping put this together for Walsworth Publications. It is a beautiful collector's edition hardbound book written by and about people of Floyd County, Georgia. It features over 500 family articles and over 300 topical stories and over 500 photographs. The color is "leaf green" with stamped gold lettering and borders with a gold outline of Floyd County, inset with the historic Clock Tower. The county and Clock Tower are enclosed within a double-ringed gold-stamped oval. Though there are many wonderful stories about people, communities, churches, schools and businesses, there are two special stories that I am glad made it in this book. Both of these deal with local landmarks that have been destroyed since we first sent all submissions in for publication. These landmarks are the old Rock Store along Kingston Highway in the Johnson School community and the 100+ year old Foster's Mill Store along Ga. 100 south of Rome. For more information about ordering or when the book will be available, please contact me at the e-mail address below. Snail-mail inquiries may be sent to the committee address. e-mail: [email protected] Snail-mail: Floyd County Heritage Book P. O.
