    3. Travis; I was in Cherokee Co about 3 or 4 years ago doing some research. I bought a book at the Anniston Library with the 1860-70-80 Census Indices and the Mortality Schedules in it. I have also, in the past, had quite a lot of e-mail conversation with a lady that did quite a bit of research for others at the Anniston Library. Through these contacts I have a notion that the Library MIGHT have some publications on Cherokee County. Another source of information might be Mrs Frank Ross Stewart who has written extensively of Cherokee County. I may have an address for Mrs Stevens and an E-mail address for the library tucked away in my floppy archives and if I do I will post them. Also, a couple of days ago there was a posting, either in this list or the ALABAMA List stating that the Gadsden, AL library had a lot of information on Cherokee Co. 3. The Gadsden Library has a lot of information on Cherokee County or atleast they did a few months ago when I was there. Several books by Mrs. Stewart, Cemetery books and family histories. Census records for both GA & AL on Microfilm, Confederate records and Pension records. I found a lot on my families and try to make several trips per year. Happy Searching! Doris

    3. Boyce, I have personally been to the Cherokee County library, and their chief resource that I can find nowhere else is the "Cherokee County Cemetery Book." Title should be self-explanatory--a listing of who occupies what cemetery. A sereies of Floyd County transcriptions by Shirley Kinney from Floyd County, Ga, are valuable also. Cherokee Co. Library has a few of these. Library here at Huntsville has more of them. Cherokee Co Lib. also has a book "Cherokee County, Alabama Marriage Records, books A, B, C, D, E, 3, F, G, and H through 1930." The records extend back to at least 1883. It is available from the Cherokee County Library, P.O. Box 550, Centre, AL 35960 for $25.00 postpaid. Though I have never been there, I would suggest calling Gadsden library to see if they have any Floyd Co. or Cherokee Co. stuff, and ask if they have the bound "Settlers of Northeast Alabama", published by the Northeast Alabama Genealogical Society, Gadsden, which has Cherokee Co. stuff as well. And check with the Rome library for their resources. I have been to neither of these. Let me remind you that a southern sliver, paralled to the present county line, of present-day Cherokee County used to lie in northern Benton County before the 1850's. It is present day Calhoun County. Benton and Calhoun records shouldn't be overlooked. I wouldn't recommend going out of the way, but if you're in Huntsville, check out the library's Heritage Room--almost a whole floor devoted to genealogical resources of all states, including census indexes and microfilm for most states. Dear List Members, As part of my effort to track down my great grandfather, William Wood (unknown middle name, alas), who was apparently killed in a mining accident in the 1890's, I'm trying to see if I can locate school records of Myrtle Corrine, the older of his two children. Does anyone know where a young child would have attended school in Tecumseh Precinct #3 in the 1890's? Thanks in advance for any info anyone can provide. --Mark in Mobile

    1. [ALCHEROK] Molly Golden
    2. On 5 Oct 1882, Mary Frances (Molly) Golden married James A. Maddux in Cherokee County. They raised a large family, and moved West, to OR and CA, in about 1904. One of their children, John Luther (Jack) Maddux, became a very well known pioneer of commercial aviation. Can anyone help me to identify Molly's parents? They are not named on her death certificate, for which the informant was her daughter Lillian, who was born in Cherokee County in 1892. Molly was born on 28 June 1866, in Al, according to her death cert., but in GA, according to census records. The 1900, 1910, and 1920 census records all agree that her father was born in GA, and her mother in AL. Any help would be greatly appreciated by Rick Sherman, Kensington, CA

    1. [ALCHEROK] Death Records
    2. Melba J Clark
    3. Sandy, There is a set of microfilm containing an index (for AL from 1908 forward) one can search for the vol and page number for the certificate. LDS has this set available for ordering to be used at their local libraries.A lot of the larger libraries have the index set (Huntsville, Gadsden, Birmingham, Wallace College are a few). Then one can order the microfilm to view the actual certificate from the LDS. Wallace College at Hanceville has a set of these microfilm. The info on the idex is useful when one has to order it from the AL Dept of Vital Statistics in Montgomery. If you use the index info (spelling, name, date, vol & pg, etc.) on your order, the chance of a "failure to find" certificate is reduced. Hope this helps, Melba -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Monday, February 14, 2000 8:00 AM Subject: [ALCHEROK] Death Records >Hello all - >I'm looking for a death record from 1932 for Cherokee County, and according >to the County Clerk's office and the Health Department, those are not kept >locally - they are at the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Montgomery. > >Does anyone know of a death record web site that might cover that time period >before I try to contact Montgomery?
