Marlene; Cherokee Co, AL was not formed until 1836. Prior to then it was Cherokee Indian territory. The information may be in any of the the surrounding counties (AL & GA) or in a Federal Archive or other Federal Repository. If the wife/mother was Indian there is a very good possibility that she is listed in the Dawes Rolls or other Cherokee Indian records. Really, I am looking for almost anything on Wm. Hall. He was born 1793 and one daughter, Margaret, on the 1910 Census, said he was from Ireland and that she was born in Cherokee Co., AL in 1820. She had an Indian mother by the name of Susan ??? They "may" have later moved to Sumter Co. and he "may" be the one that claimed to be a "mixedblood" in order to remain in AL after the 1830 Treaty with the Indians. I have no proof of anything beyond approx. 1838 when he was in Skullyville, OK when the Indians moved West. I do not know if he was from Ireland or if he was part Indian. I found it much easier to find my James Smith in the 1700's than Wm. Hall in the 1800's. One has no idea as to many Wm. Halls received land in AL in the same time frame - much less how many entered this country about the same time. I have tried the LDS records and every other site I could find. I do believe there are more Halls than Smiths in this country. I have seen some information written on this family, but entirely without proof. I am not familiar with that part of AL as to what records there may be. If anyone knows of a good researcher in that area, I would love to have their name. They do not have to be a "professional" genealogist. I would love to know the grandparents of Margaret Hall or anything about the family. I have spent much time in libraries and court houses, but cannot do much of that any more. Marlene

Your >help will be appreciated. When I have a question like this, I tend to turn to the US Geographic Survey's name server at http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html Using a search for feature name "Philadelphia", state "Alabama", and feature type of "cemetery", I found there were 6 "Philadelphia" cemeteries - in Fayette, Lee, Marion, Monroe, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa counties. Since none of these were in Cherokee County, I then searched for Spring Garden as a "populated place" in Cherokee County. The USGS indicates that Spring Garden is located at latitude 33.58.22N and longitude 85.33.14W and is on the "Piedmont" map. Next I run a search for all cemeteries on the Piedmont map. Eliminating those not in Cherokee County, I come up with this: Carmel Cemetery, 33.57.35, 85.34.31 Farmer Cemetery, 33.58.18, 85.35.37 Goshen Cemetery, 33.57.44, 85.37.02 Pleasant Gap Cemetery, 33.59.30, 85.31.18 Now, if I run one final search for all churches on the Piedmont map and eliminate those not in Cherokee County, I wind up with this: Carmel Church, 33.57.36, 85.34.35 Faith Church, 33.57.45, 85.33.25 Goshen Church, 33.58.32, 85.37.01 Goshen Valley Church, 33.58.55, 85.37.01 Liberty Church, 33.59.11, 85.32.39 Pleasant Gap Church, 33.58.42, 85.31.26 Spring Garden Methodist, 33.58.31, 85.32.58 So - I still can't answer your question about where your cemetery is located, but I do have some names to work on. However, searching on "Philadelphia" with no feature specified, I did discover that there's a Philadelphia community and Philadelphia Church in Calhoun County at 33.56.29, 85.32.48 - maybe your ancestor is buried in Calhoun County instead of Cherokee? The Cherokee County cemetery records does not list a Philadelphia cemetery. This is the first I have heard of it. John
Last Sunday, my husband and I attended the Decoration Day at Salem Baptist Church at Bluffton (Cherokee Co.), AL. We were welcomed and enjoyed meeting the area folk. Their hospitality was heartwarming. However, I am concerned that there is no established fund for the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery. I made a donation to start such a fund and would encourage anyone with any family connection to do the same. There is so much history and heritage there and I want to do my part to preserve it. The community around the church seems to have almost diminished. If you would like to contribute, the minister's name is Rev. Gene Fair. His address is 863 Old Centre Hwy., Piedmont, AL 36272. Please mark any contributions Cemetery Fund. Feel free to mention my name. Hope this posting does not offend anyone. It is not posted with that intention. Only with concern for our ancestors who worked so hard for the good of their community, church and families. Elaine Clonts Russell Townsend, TN

Hello all, I'm revitalizing the Cherokee County AlGenWeb site (URL on bottom line), and would like to hear from folks willing to do lookups. This means if you have a book or a list or legal records with Cherokee County names that others may not have access to, or if you are willing to take your digital camera to the courthouse or look at microfilm (even for a small fee), then let me know the extent of what you're able to do. After I put your name on the web site as a volunteer and you find anything unsatisfactory, please write me at any time and I'll make it right. VOLUNTEER! The new pages are being worked on right now. The existing links will remain. New contributions or links solicited. I recommend posting your gedcom on http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/index.html and let me know the address and I will make a link to it. They display your gedcom beautifully, with footnotes if you choose to upload footnotes. You have the opportunity during the upload process of deciding which fields not to upload. As an example, see my gedcom at http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=travhard In mine, the comment field does not exist. Andrew and Jehu were sons of David. David was born in SC married Mary Donaldson in TN (where Andrew, Jehu and others were born) and moved to Dekalb CO AL where he died. Andrew is found in the 1850 Cherokee Co census with wife Susan (chaney?). There is also in this household a Francis Norris m 16 TN. I do not know the connection of Francis to the family and would love to know more about him also. Andrew later moved to Dekalb Co and is buried in Fischer cemetery there Would love more info on this family and ready to share what I do have. Thanks Good Hunting Doris Mayer Reece
"Hope you don't mind this rather lengthy article, but it seems modern-day census takers are facing some of the challenges their forebears did! No wonder we can't find our ancestors when they "should" be there!! The------" The above from Sandy made me have to add this: I did Census in 1980 and 1990. I was Crewleader with enumeraters reporting back to me with forms they had to go out and try to get completed. If people ref. to answer for them, then I had to contact the same people. you think they were mad the first time, imagine what happened when I contacted them. Need less to say, I survived- WHEE! How many of you have filled out your return and still had enumeraters come to your door and try to get you to do it over? We had two forms, short formfor our correct address East____St. and long form for West____St. We live on East____St. so we filled out the one with our address and gave it back to the mailman along with the wrong form. The census taker came to our house and said we would have to fill out the form because they hadn't got the one back for West______St. I told her it was an incorrect address, that that one wasn't ours.BTW, there is no West______St. with our same number on it.,but there was a form with that number on it. and said if we filled it out, we would be counted twice, once at an incorrect address which didn't exist. I know others on our block was contacted by same worker, as she thought we were on West_______St. We refused to fill it out again and had her take it back to her "boss". Got a call later that every thing had been taken care of. BTW it was't the workers fault, it was the fault of the mappers who did the prelim work. But, the workers should know East from West, then all they have to do is delete the one that doesn't exist. Imagine" our" decendents looking for us at two addresses.<g>. Not grin-groan. If this is to long, just delete it. If a worker comes to your house and asks you to fill ot a form and you already have, check the address, it may not be yours!!

Hope you don't mind this rather lengthy article, but it seems modern-day census takers are facing some of the challenges their forebears did! No wonder we can't find our ancestors when they "should" be there!! The following article is on AOL, and I have shortened it up some. Sandy Rural Census-Takers Brace for Challenges By GENARO C. ARMAS .c The Associated Press MANHEIM, Pa. (May 16) - The travel can be tough, especially when you have to walk down dirt driveways in 90-degree heat. The job pays $11.25 an hour, but dealing with people can sometimes be a challenge, especially when they just don't want to talk. When that happens, census-taker Lois Weaver just grins and moves on to the next home or farm. It's what the 440,000 Census Bureau workers must do to track down the 42 million households around the country which did not return a questionnaire. For people like Weaver, who work in more rural areas, the job can be tougher. Rural areas got a higher percentage of long forms than cities - the same 53-question long form that has sparked debate over whether the Census Bureau asks questions that are too intrusive. ''Most people are nice, friendly and helpful,'' said Weaver, a gift shop owner who took the Census Bureau job to help buy a new computer. ''But if someone's not going to fill it out, I can't make them. Seventy-eight million of the 120 million forms mailed out have been returned, leaving census-takers to track down the missing 42 million. The operation ends on July 7. There have been reports of census-takers being chased off porches by gun-toting homeowners. One enumerator near Tahlequah, Okla., was invited into a home, but wasn't allowed to leave until two hours later, said Titus Frenchman, manager of the Tulsa, Okla., Census Bureau office. ''We now move from one phase of the census to another - the very demanding task of convincing people who did not return their forms to cooperate when census-takers come to their door,'' Prewitt said. ''If we stopped now, the results could be disastrous for many communities.'' More long forms are missing this year than in the last census 10 years ago: the response rate gap doubled from 6 percent to 12 percent during that time. Overall, 1 of 6 households across the country were randomly selected to get the long form. But the ratio fell to 1 out of 4, or 1 out of 2 in more rural areas in order to get detailed information that was statistically comparable to data from cities. Some census-takers go to unusual lengths to get the job done. In Maine, workers used lobster boats to sail to remote island homes, while in Santa Fe County, N.M., employees needed four-wheel drive vehicles to travel over rough roads to get to isolated homes. John Trochmann, co-founder of the Militia of Montana, says he tells people they should only answer questions that deal with age, skin color, address and sex. ''We've been very cooperative, and we urge everyone to cooperate up to that point,'' said Trochmann, of Noxon, Mont. ''These so-called census-workers here are neighbors of us, we are not hostile to anyone. Unless they draw first blood, in which case we better be prepared.'' Mark Hendrick, a Census Bureau area manager for Montana, Utah and Wyoming, said enumerators are trained to handle the stickiest of situations. Except in areas where safety is a concern, census-takers usually do the job on their own. Michael Zdan, of Bear Creek, Pa., is a census-taker whose territory includes isolated mountain homes and out-of-the way lakeside resorts in the Pocono Mountains. He takes a gentle approach if someone declines to answer his questions. ''I tell them, 'If you don't answer now, then another enumerator will knock on your door, so you might as well as just get it over with now,''' Zdan said. Howell J Myrick married Mary Catherine Robbins, 22 Jan 1882 in Jefferson Co., AL. [Bk 9, Pg 742]. Howell's sister, Frances Jane Myrick married Mary Catherine's brother, Jessee Elbert Robbins, 11 Jan 1883, Jefferson Co., AL, [Bk 9 pg 785] Howell and Frances are found on the 1880 census with their mother, Sarah and others. <<<<<<<<< 1880 AL JEFF CO Vol 11 E.D.68 PG32; MYRICK, Sarah 43 b NC; Monroe 17; Howell 15; Francis J 14f; Mary 12; Adelina 10; all b AL/AL/NC; HULSEY, Webster 1 son b AL/-/AL NOTE: Webster listed as son of Sarah b NC but his mother is indicated as b AL.>>>>>>>>>>>> I have other information on this family, especially on Mary Catherine's parents, grandparents, cousins, etc. A descendant of Howell and Mary Catherine would be a cousin of some degree to me. Mary Catherine is my first cousin, three-times-removed. I would be interested in adding their family branch to my file. Are you related to the Elizabeth A Odom who married Andrew M Robbins 17 Mar 1859, Jefferson Co., AL. If so, how? Andrew M is my double-first cousin, three-times-removed. His father, Thomas B, and Mary Catherine's father, John B, and my gr-gr-grandfather, Levi M, were brothers. Andrew M's mother, Nancy A Youngblood Robbins, and my gr-gr-grandmother, Elizabeth E Youngblood Robbins, were sisters.
