    1. RE: [ALCHEROK] Westbrook Family
    2. Mike Harris
    3. Merry Ann-just clues here-there was a large landowner in Cherokee Co., Joseph Westbrook, who acquired most of his land in 1845. His land adjoined my ancestor Wiley Jenkins Casey, as well as Gilbert C. Craig and William S. Acker. I don't know what happened to Joseph Westbrook or anything else about him (am not researching this line). However, in the 1850 Cherokee Co. census there's still a Westbrook family near Gilbert Craig and Wiley Casey. The h/h/ is Louisa Westbrook, age 37, and children are Pinckney, Rufus, Marcus, Joseph and James. There's also another couple living in the household. This land is fairly close to Calhoun County and Piedmont. Perhaps your Westbrooks could be descended from this Joseph. Don't know, just a thought... Joyce Harris Houston, TX -----Original Message----- From: Merry Ann Simmons [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, November 26, 2000 1:21 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [ALCHEROK] Westbrook Family My grandfather was Oscar Thomas or Thomas Oscar depending upon the record. His dob was 1893. He had one full sister Lorena who was born in 1896. He always said when asked that his parents were Gene Westbrook and Becky Hite. He said his mother died and his father took off, leaving him and his sister with Becky's parents Andrew and Nancy Hite. Both children are enumerated with them on the 1900 census. On the 1880 census for the Hites there is a Frances R. listed who might have been "Becky". We have no paper trail on either parents. Papa said Gene's parents were Wash and Minnie Westbrook. Grandma said Minnie was a Reaves(could be spelled Reeves) I have been unable to find anything on these parents either. My great aunt who was my grandmothers sister-in-law by her brother, said that "Gene father alot of children". She is 80 and doesn't know anything other then that. I have been told that Gene was possibly Gene W. Westbrook and he had the following children, Carrie, Cora, Lester, Lum, Minnie, Robert Oscar, Mattie and Webb. Said Gene lived in Jefferson Co Ala. Robert Oscar lived in Piedmont, Calhoun Co Ala. and married Maude Melton Smart. This person said that they believed that Gene's parents were John Washington Westbrook and Margaret Reaves. This person wasn't researching this line and this is all he had. I know that Gene was alive when my father was a child and my dad was born in 1920. My father is deceased so is most of Oscars children who would know anything. I am hoping to hook up with someone researching this line. Or someone who might have a obit or burial site for Gene. I have told everyone for years that my Papa was placed here by aliens since I have found nothing on this line, haha. But some where Gene had to leave a paper trail. Any help is appreciated, Merry Ann Simmons

    3. Josiah or (Isaiah )Ivey lived in Cherokee co, AL after 1850. We found him on the 1860 Census with his family. Two of his sons were not with him at this time. James stayed in Marlboro Co. SC, while Enoch Jefferson went to Marshall Co. MS. My question is this. The records show his wife as Martha. Our family records list her as a Patricia Miles. Recently I found a Martha Patsy Miles-b 3/5/1824 Limestone Co.AL She is marr to Johnathan Isom. As she is too young to be a wife to Isaiah, could she possibly be an aunt by the same name. I also found a second Martha Patsy Miles in SC as early as the 1700's. Any help in solving this mystery would be very much appreciated. 2. Lorna J Rosenstein
    3. I went to a genealogy seminar this weekend and heard one of those things that was so obvious I could have choked. In posting personal genealogical websites, remember, what info does the bank require for you to access all your accounts? ..your birthdate and your mothers maiden name...duh and yikes. In my zeal, everything is available to anyone. So use a different password. From the collective groans that surfaced, I wasn't the only one who hadn't considered that. Please know, this isn't an invitation for five hundred comments thus taking up too much email space, just passing on some too obvious information.

    1. [ALCHEROK] good private web sites
    2. Merry Ann Simmons
    3. Just a thought. While the mailing lists are a great source of info along with other sites like Ancestry.com and Cyndislist, I also have gotten great information off of personal web pages of researchers. The only draw back is trying to find them! I know there are alot, like me, who use these and bookmark them but we need to get them out to others. Maybe if we have a "roll call" of sorts for great web sites we have found with a brief description of what area or information they cover? Example: www.ovis.net/~billcham/ This is a great page for Wetzel Co, operated by Bill Cunningham, which I have found more info and connections off of then I could have ever gotten from Ancestry. I also started using another little trick to run these sites to ground since the search engines were not doing the job. Most of your smaller communities use a smaller server. Bill uses "ovis.net". So I type in www.ovis.net click on the section for "personal" pages hosted by ovis.net. You then can scroll down to see what home pages are listed from this site. It tells you a brief description of each one. Just click and go. Also you can use this if you know of an area by searching for the service provider. New Martinsville offers rcvideo.com, they also list home pages but also under links provide a genealogy link site to surrounding counties with reseachers homepages. Maybe this isn't something new to others but I stumbled onto this about 6 months ago on a late night gen searching feast! So if anyone has any web sites they want to share other then the very popular ones, lets see what we can find, Merry Ann
