Cox Funeral Home burned and all its records were destroyed to my knowledge. I have asked everywhere in Gadsden and everyone comes to that conclusion. John

Have you checked with Collier-Butler Funeral Home in Gadsden? Don't know, but you could ask them, since they've been around a good while. I am searching for information about my Great Great Grandfather, Rev. Berry Alexander Gregory, (called Alec or BA). I know he was one time pastor of Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church. I believe this is Pleasant Vally #1. What I would like to know is when he pastored there and if anyone knows his parents name and burial site. If you can help, let me hear from you. Regards Dale Gregory

The Haralson Co Historical Society will be recognizing the Early Settlers of Haralson Co during a series of special programs at their regular monthly meetings beginning in February. A different Family or Families will be recognized each month during this special series. The first family to be recognized will be the Caleb Goldin family. Caleb and his family came to this part of the state about 1827, almost 30 years before Haralson Co was formed. A plaque will be presented recognizing this Early Pioneer Family. Please make plans to be at the February 12 meeting at the Old Courthouse on the square in Buchanan at 7 p.m. If you would like to nominate an Early Pioneer Family to be recognized at a future meeting, send an e-mail to [email protected] with the name of the Early Settlers, date they moved to this area (present day Haralson Co) and why you think they should be chosen. Ok I did something really stupid and lost a email address! I thought I had it all backed up before we crashed it but apparently not. I need Sue who I did look ups for last night to email me again. We were doing look ups for Mulligan, Bright, and Edmunds, Sorry Merry Ann
It's possible you can find something useful on the Bluffton page and elsewhere on my website (below), as well as the Cherokee County AlaGenWeb site. Bluffton is/was very close to Rock Run. Also see on my web site the roster of one Civil War company that drew some men from Bluffton. Hardin, Minton, and Sloan were some names. Perhaps you'll find some of your names there. For "on the ground" research, don't neglect the Cherokee Co. Public Library, 310 Mary St, Centre, AL 35960 (256) 927-5838. Have you looked at cemetery listings and other resources on the AlGenWeb page (below)? Hello, everybody! I am responding to Diane's question about Benjamin Hood in Cherokee County, 1870-80. According to the 1880 Federal Census, her father was born in > Ireland, and her mother in SC. I don't know if this is the same Hood you are looking for in Cherokee County. I have a copy of the diary of Sarah Rousseau Espy covering the years 1859-1868 and there is much mention of a Parson Hood. At various places in the diary she referred to him as Parson, Preacher, or Elder. The first mention of him is as Preacher Hood at a meeting at Yellow Creek, Sept 2, 1859, then the next day to her home for mid-day dinner. In November he was elected moderator [of the church association] for the ensuing year. Continued references to his preaching at Shady Grove, Willow Creek, Round Mountain, and Lebanon. There is also a mention of a Miss Hood who came with Elder Hood and spent Sunday night at Sarah Espyís home. In November, 1860, Elder Hood was elected pastor at Yellow Creek for the next year. In July, 1861, there is mention of Hood's volunteers being given a bucket dinner at the school-house, then, still in July went to King's where a volunteer company is to elect its officers; they chose Elder Hood as Captain. On July 29, 1861, she says, they are to start to Huntsville on the 14th August; Elder Hood's are to start on the 13th to Richmond. So we are to lose our preacher, and the country one of her best men. On Aug 4, 1861, Elder Hood, who is going off soon with his company, preached his farewell sermon to a large congregation. On Aug 30, finished a pair of socks for Alfred Espy, one of Mr. Hood's company, who leaves next Wednesday. On September 3rd and 4th: the boat (Bill Ramey) which is to take the volunteers tomorrow, arrived at Dublin last night, and is lying there now. Elder Hood came home with T. tonight. Pretty morning, we went to Dublin early; a large concourse of people assembled there to witness the departure of the volunteers; considerable excitement. On the 11th of Jan., 1862, however, he went to see Elder Hood this evening, who has returned on account of ill health. On the 29th of March, 1862, Mr. Hood preached and also consented to attend the Church the remaining of the year. He provided a great deal of comfort to the Espy family in the lingering death of their son Columbus Espy, who died 29 Nov 1862 of wounds taken during the war. Sarah continues to mention Parson Hood preaching until the end of her diary, 1868. She never mentions his first name, so don't know if this is your man or not! I have permission from the Alabama Archives to publish Sarah's diary, and am working on the index, so persons mentioned in it can be looked up. In the meantime, if you think you might have had people living in the area during 1859-1868, I'll be happy to do lookups. Martha Lyle

I am hoping to find information (any information) about the family of a Benjamin F. HOOD, known to be living in Cherokee Co., AL from at least 1870 to 1880. He may have served in the 13th Infantry Regiment of Alabama Troops in the Civil War (I have sent for the records of this Benjamin F. Hood, but don't yet have them). He is supposed to have been born in SC ca. 1826. His oldest child (b. ca. 1855) is supposed to have been born in AL. I doubt his pre-war county of residence in AL was Cherokee Co. According to the 1880 Federal Census, his father was born in SC and his mother in NC. All I know about his wife is that her first name was Mary, and that she was born in NC. According to the 1880 Federal Census, her father was born in Ireland, and her mother in SC. They are known to have had the folowing children: Susan, b. ca. 1855 Elzora (1870 census)/Em (1880 census), b. ca. 1860 William T[homas], b. Dec. 28, 1862 Nancy, b. ca. 1864 E. R. b. ca. 1865 Charles b. ca. 1867 (may have died young, is only on 1870 census) Lewis, b. 1870 Emma, b. ca. 1871 Ida J., b. ca. 1875 Mary, b. ca. 1878 Jas. D. F., b. 1880 Also, on the 1880 census these is a grandchild named William T. Hood living in the household, aged two months, and therefore born in 1880. I know that the son William T. HOOD moved to Florida, was married in 1888, had several children, and died there in 1922. I have information in the direct line from him on down (he is my great-grandfather). It looks like Charles may have died young, but the sons Lewis and Jas. D. F. may have lived long enough to be fruitful, but maybe not in Cherokee Co. Any help on this brick wall would be helpful. ****All the information I have on Benjamin F. Hood and his family is contained within this posting.**** Thanks for your time. Dianne Hood
Hello All: With the coming of a new year again I want to repost who I am trying to find more information on. I seek to learn the name of the cemetery where the man known to me as Grand Uncle Hezikiah Allen Cothran is buried. His widow moved away from their home place in Ceder Bluff, AL sometime after his death to Ethowah Co. AL. the home of one of their children: Mary Jane Cothran Meeks wife of William Marion Meeks who for years worked at and ran the Gadsden Times Newspaper there. Uncle Hez was a shop keeper and ran a local Blacksmith Shop in Ceder Bluffs. He and Methela Crouch Cothran had wed in Ceder Bluff, AL on 11/24/1842. Him coming from Greenville Dist. SC and her coming from Washington Co. Tenn where she had been b. abt. 1818. Methela ended up buried in Etowah Co. and him back in Cherokee Co. somewhere. I have the information on her but can't seem to locate him. Now in Cherokee Co. AL. in the town of Centre in what some folks there call the Cothran cemetery I found by way of a cousin: H.H. Cothran but the dates don't match up with the bible and the US Census. He is buried beside a woman named Nannie Cothran? Have no idea who she is. The reason that I bring this up is this: Found in Cherokee Co. AL on the US Census in 1860 is Uncle Hez. only he is by error listed as H.H. ??? Is this him in Centre or is this some other known to some on this list man? Do any of you online claim this H.H. Cothran and Nannie buried in Centre, AL.? Thanks for any help with this. Gail
