    3. Am looking for the specific dates and location of death for members of my ancestry that lived east of Ballplay near the Cherokee-Etowah County line. John F. and Louisa A. (Cunningham) Hoge are both believed to have died several years after 1900. Would like to identify the specific date and location of their death if at all possible. Would also like to know if there were newspapers published in that area for that time period that are on file as I would like to find their obituaries if at all possible. Al Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Al/Cherokee/607 Surname: ------------------------- Ballplay is a community in Etowah County near the Cherokee County line. I believe at one time it was part of Cherokee County or maybe Benton. The community was named this because all of the Indian tribes in the NE Alabama and NW Georgia area came to this spot and played games similar to a baseball/soccer(if I remember correctly) combination to settle their disputes without bloodshed. Hope this helps.

    1. Brooks/Rhodes/McMurry/Lattimore
    2. Hiram BROOKS, b 1780 Guilford or Rutherford Co, NC was a son of William Brooks, Rev War Soldier of RC,NC. His wife was Jinny LATTIMORE b 1790 SC, possibly York Co, SC . She was a desc of John LATTIMORE (1829) and Isabel FRAZIER (1733) who lived in Rutherford/Cleveland Co, NC after 1790. She was probably a dau of Daniel, Francis, or Samuel. The couple Hiram and Jinny BROOKS married about 1810 and came to Cherokee Co, AL before 1850, perhaps about 1848 and settled first on the Chattooga River and then settled in Broomtown Valley. Hiram was a chairmaker. So, were his neighbors who had children that married Brooks children. They were the RHODES, and McMURRY/McMURROUGH/McMURROW families of chair makers. I want to know the names of ALL CHILDREN of Hiram and Jinny. I know there must have been some who were adults before Hiram came to Cherokee Co, AL. KNOWN children are: ENOCH b 1814 (male); James b 1816 who m Nancy Ann Firestone before 1844; Miller BROOKS b 1827 who married Harriet OWENS bef 1847. I have Hiram on the 1820 census of Rutherford Co, NC 1830 census of Spartanburg, SC 1840 census of GA ?? 1850 census of Cherokee,AL Broomtown 1860 census of Cherokee,AL 1870 census of Cherokee, AL Hiram was age 90, and Jinny was age 80.

    3. I'm sending this again because I had the slant bars wrong in my web address! Sorry! Hello, everybody! I'm so happy to report that I have been accepted into the Swedish Colonial Society as a Forefather member through our Bankson ancestor, Anders Bengtsson. This took many years of research to establish the elusive link from our Cherokee County ancestor, James Nicholas Bankson, to his parents Joseph and Hetty Bankson of Baltimore, Maryland. James N. Bankson fought in Baltimore at the Battle of North Point in September 1814 during the War of 1812. After that he came to Tennessee, where he married Margaret Swan in 1819. James N. came to Cherokee County around 1833 from Jefferson County, Tennessee. You can find the ancestry of James N. Bankson on my web site at http://www.mlylewebconnect.com/ Just click on the button that mentions my genealogy hobby. I would like to collect data on James N. Bankson's descendants. I have much of this already, but would love to hear from any of you that have Bankson data in Cherokee County. Regards, Martha Bankson Lyle

    2. Patsy Davis
    3. I am still looking for information on the TANNER family of Cherokee Co., AL. John TANNER was born 1820 in GA, he married Rona (unknown). On Nov 1, 1851 purchased 40 acres in Cherokee Co, AL.. He had the following children listed on the 1850 census for Cherokee Co. Elizabeth b 1840 Wiley b 1842 Silas b 1844 William b 1848 Silas was my ancestor. I believe he married Sarah Adeline JOHNSON in 1860 in Polk Co., GA. In 1864 I believe he enlisted in the Union Army in Rome GA just before the fall of Atlanta. Two months later he was reported as a deserter. I have not found him on the 1870 census, anywhere, but believe he may have been in Cherokee Co. I believe he died Oct 24, 1875 but do not know where. In 1896 Sarah tried to file for a Union Widows pension in Parker Co., TX but it was denied because of his status as a deserter. That is the death date she reported. In 1900, Sarah was back in Al in Calhoun Co. Sarah is on the 1880 Cherokee Co census with the following children: Frank N b 1862 John Thomas b 1864 (July 4, 1862 according to grave marker) married Joanna JOHNSON. Buried in Talladega, Co. Fannie b 1867 Ben (Benjamin Franklin?) b 1870 Died in GA, buried in Talladega Co. William b 1872 Samuel b 1875 Would love to hear from anyone with information on ANY of these folks. Thanks, Patsy Spradley Davis
