    3. Wayne, I may be badly mistaken, but I get the idea because you mention Mississippi and Marion County, Alabama, that you are talking about the town of Cherokee in Colbert County. That group is probably something like [email protected] This group is about Cherokee County, Alabama. Pardon me if I have misread you. 1. [ALCHEROK] BallPlay, Turkeytown, Ft. Armstrong
    2. Gene Funderburk
    3. I have many questions about Cherokee County and would sure appreciate any info. Is there a query board and/or genealogical society (via Internet) for my correspondence? I live in Wilmington, NC though I grew up in Oxford (Calhoun Co.). My mother's relatives (Gowens/Murphys)lived in the Ball Play-Hokes Bluff area. Does Ft. Armstrong (from early settler days in then-Indian territory) correspond with Cedar Bluff today? If not, where would it be? How many villages/towns were "drowned" by Weiss Lake? I understand Turkeytown was almost totally covered except for a small area used now for ceremonies. Is there a museum in the area devoted largely to Indians and early Alabama history? I know John B. LaGarde museum is in Anniston but can't remember if it has an Indian focus. Is there a viable modern-day Indian presence in Alabama? I know that Ball Play was used for the game "lacrosse" by Cherokees (perhaps Creeks as well since the Coosa seemed to be the boundary for these 2 tribes). Is there a particularly flat field close to the river at Ball Play, perhaps with raised sides as for seating? Turkeytown was once the largest Cherokee town existant, probably with it being strung along the Coosa for many miles. Are there any current excavations in the area or recent archaeology finds? Here's hoping someone can answer my questions or point me in the right direction. Thanks so much. Carolyn Funderburk [email protected]
