Whow!!! Thanks Judy. I just corrected my database. Now here was another reference that I had, and the reason I had Hugh's wife as Nancy Pitts. !BIOGRAPHY: Bobby L Lindsey. THE REASON FOR THE TEARS. (West Point, GA:Hester Printing Co., 1971) [I own...wei] p. 288. Janey Pitts b 1775 SC, was living in the household of Hugh Wallace and is family in 1850. Note--- this reference does not mentioned that this Nancy was wife of Aaron Pitts. But does mention Aaron Pitts married to a Nancy ???. p. 293.WALLACE: Hugh Wallace b 1805 SC; m Nancy Pitts, b 1813; Issue: William C b 1836 SC; Washington M Wallace b 1838 Mt Jefferson, Chambers Co., AL; John b 1840 Mt Jefferson; Elizabeth b 1842 Mt Jefferson; Caroline b 1844 Mt Jefferson Marian D Wallace b 1846 Mt Jefferson James Wallace b 1848 Mt Jefferson So, another reference that was incorrect. Do you know how the Nancy Pitts, b abt 1775 living with Hugh Wallace in 1850 is related to Hugh or his wife, Nancy, if at all? I did have a Nancy who married Aaron Pitts in my file. He is related. And I have a partial on his line. You say you have something on the Pitts? Bill
Do you know Nancy Pitts' parents names? I really have 2 Pitts' lines in AL/GA/SC, but haven't found a source to connect this Nancy to them. Hugh and Catherine. Hugh was born January 7, 1805 and Catherine was born later. After William died Mary married William Brown. (Do not know at this time if any relation to the Thomas Brown, Jr. husband of Frances above.) They had one child, Winny. Mary died December 2, 1811, leaving Hugh and Catherine orphaned. Their guardianship papers are dated March 2, 1812. Winny stayed with her father and Hugh and Catherine went to their Uncle Hugh. William, Sr. disinherited all off-spring of his children who died before him, but Uncle Hugh and Grandma Mary included all. William son of Captain John had inherited the family homeplace when Captain John died, and rent from this property provided funds from 1813 to 1820 for the education of Hugh and Catherine. Hugh's earliest record of schooling is in 1814 when he was taught by James Gilliam for eight dollars. In 1815, Catherine joined him with E. Eastland teaching at six dollars each and James Shepperd at eight dollars apiece. Robert A. Evans was paid their tuition in 1816. In 1819, the two children went to a boarding school near Mountain Springs, SC named Mount Tabor Academy, taught by Stephen Shell for nine dollars each. A book of arithmetic problems in Hugh's handwriting contained the following quotes: "Hugh Wallace commenced 1st day of April 1819 and got through the 26th of October 1819. Hugh Wallaces Book dont steal this book my honest friend for fear the gallows may be yur end and at judgement day God Almighty will say you roguish rascal whose book you took away. Hugh Wallace is my name, America is my Station, Newberry is my dwelling place, and Christ is my Salvation. When this yu see remember me. Mr. Shell has done it this 4th of April 1820. Hugh Wallace has not got no paper and he is through his arithmetic all but five leaves and if he had a half quire of paper it would carry him through. William Burgess taught them for 7.75 each in 1820. Sometime in 1825, Catherine married Jefferson Floyd son of Captain John Floyd, and on May 8, 1828, Hugh married Nancy Floyd (1812-1895), a niece of Jefferson Floyd. Hugh and Nancy's first child Mary Fannie, was born in Newberry. In December 1835, Hugh and family traveled to Chamber County to join his father-in-law, Cornelius Floyd. Many neighbors from Newberry and Lexington Districts in SC came about this time: David Shealey, Andrew Betts, Boazman, Rudd, Summers, Jamison and others. Upon arrival, he built a house on 640 acres of land he bought from Robert Floyd (his wife's uncle) and there he lived the rest of his life. This log structure, put together with wooden pegs, was originally two rooms with a sleeping loft. A kitchen was built as a separate room in back of the house. This was later joined to the house by an enclosed hall which became the dining room. The house, presently (1999) two stories with additional rooms, is located on what was then the Cusseta_Salem Road - now Lee County road 266 just off Highway 29. By 1843, Hugh was a justice of the peace and remained so until at least 1866, witnessing documents and performing countless marriages. The 1850 Agriculture Census shows him farming 500 acres-raising cattle, oxen, horses, sheep, swine, and growing wheat, Indian corn, oats, cotton, and sweet potatoes. At the death of his father-in-law, Cornelius Floyd, he bought 320 acres of land to the west with a sawmill on Halawakee Creek. In 1870, he added irish potatoes, peas, beans, and hay to his list of crops on 600 acres. By 1880, he was also raising fowl, barley, and corghum with an orchard of 20 apple and 75 peach trees; but now, at age 75, he was only farming 295 acres. The other land was given to his children, most of whom settled along the same road. This union was blessed with twelve children: 1.Mary Fannie (1833-1891) married William Jasper Adams 2. William Cornelius (1836-1928) 3. Washington McDuffie (1837-1915) married Mary Jane "Martha" Setzler 4. John F. (1839-1864), killed in the War between the States, married Sue E. Boazman 5. Elizabeth Newberry (1843-1928) married Nathaniel Macon 6. Nancy Caroline (1844-1932) married Thomas Martin Shealey 7. Marion DeKalb (1846-1888) married Mattie Adams 8. James D. (1848-1851) 9. Killis "Bunk" LaFayette (1851-1931) married Nancy A. Hudmon 10. Robert Adam (1853-1920) married Emma Love Matthers 11. Hugh Filmore (1856-1920) married Amarylis Pitts 12. Demsey A. (1858-?) married Lewis H. Hamilton "In the year 1844 or 1845 he joined the United Baptist denomination of Shady Grove, a house of worship and remained with that denomination until it dissolved. In 1886 he attached himself to the Protestant Methodist Church and remained with it. " By 1900, almost everyone in the vicinty of the two churches was related to Wallaces and/or Floyds. Hi Judy and Janet, Below are some notes I have, but have this family in my database, but have not connected to my PITTS family yet. Nancy was a PITTS, but have not proven she is connected at this point. This family living in amongst my other PITTS families, so believe a connection is there somewhere. Do any of these ring a bell? I don't have a Jesse Wallace/Wallis in my db. Bill !RESIDENCES: THE PEOPLE OF CHAMBERS CO., AL. [I own vols 2 and 3...wei] Vol. 2 - 1850 Census. p. 230. Hugh Wallace was a Justice of the Peace. Will be unsubscribing from all lists for a few days. Computer at home quit on me. Still have AOL access to my account at work but don't want to drive 20 miles on my days off to retrieve mail. Will be back on as soon as I get up and running from home computer again. Judy In Newnan JodieK444@aol.com

South on I 85 1st. exit on ala side, turn Right then Left back over the interstate about one mile on your Right. Hwy US29 south.
Traveling South on Interstate 85 you will cross the state line, Chattahoochee River, and immediately exit onto Hwy. 29. A right turn will take you to Lanett and Shoney's, a left turn will take you to Valley where you will find the library just a short distance South on Hwy 29. As you exit and turn left you will pass under a traffic light. Counting that as number one, you will pass under two more traffic lights and at the fourth light the library will be on your right. Very easy to find and if you pass Wal-Mart, you've passed the library. James "Lee" Weaver A Certified, "Son of the South." Can someone tell me how to find the Cobb Memorial Library coming from Atlanta? Thanks, Marge
