Hi, No I don't have 9.0. But thanks for the warning. I can't get in at all on my yahoo side.took me forever to finally get an 800 number. So I'm going to call them. I'm tired of having to run to the library a long ways away to get into it. Thanks, Sandel
The virus would not be sent from Rootsweb lists,, however,, the problem with the new virus is that they "forge" the sender, so a message with a virus attached could "appear" to come from a rootsweb list even though it is actually sent from someone else. In the digest form,, any posts to the list are saved and sent out in a lump number as attachments. There is a way around this by changing the security settings on your Outlook Express which is in Tools, Options, Security and uncheck "do not allow attachments to be saved or opened". Because there are so very many virus' out there now, I would not use that above option. I would suggest that you simply use the list mode ALCHAMBE-L as both give you the same emails, the only difference is that with ALCHAMBE-L you get each email as it is posted, in ALCHAMBE-D they are saved for a period,, usually 24-48 hours then all sent out at once as attachments. However if you feel confident enough in your virus protection software, the above option should work for you. Are you kidding? I'm still on AOL system 5, since the newer version for Macs requires Mac OSX and I'm too chicken to try it. It's so different from the other Mac systems it's scary. Receiving digest mail in a regular e-mail has been no problem. I don't like to download anything that isn't absolutely necessary. While I'm here, I might as well mention that I'm researching the DORMAN and related families in Chambers County. Specifically, descendants of WILEY D. DORMAN and ELMINA JONES who arrived in Chambers shortly after their marriage in Troup County in 1832. Wiley was married previously to MARTHA NEWBERRY (married in SC) who died and left him with four small children, all raised by Elmina. Family stories say that during her illness, Martha was cared for by Elmina Jones and her mother, Nancy Elizabeth Fincher Jones. Children of Wiley and Martha Newberry Dorman were: 1. GREEN WASHINGTON DORMAN (1820-1908) grew up in Chambers County, married Sarah Head and moved to Arkansas. Known children are Martha, Elmina, Sarah, Dulcina, and Susan (taken from census). There were others. 2. JAMES MONROE DORMAN (b. 1824, died in Louisiana), wife's name unknown, last name may be Hill. James' son, James A. Dorman, married Caroline Trotti Sweat. 3. SARAH ANN DORMAN (1827-1871) married William N. Wilson, Sr., remained in Chambers Co.. Both are buried in the Dorman cemetery not far from LaFayette. Children were Wiley, Josephine, Charles, William, Monroe, Sarah, Allen and Mollie. 4. SUSAN DORMAN (1830-1869?) married Seaborn May, son of Nathaniel May and Polly Grimmet; moved to Arkansas (Clark County). I am doing research on this line at the present time. Children were James M., Martha, Wylie Nathaniel, William L., Seaborn B., George E. and Robert. Children of Wiley Dorman and 2nd wife Elmina Jones (daughter of Henry Jones and Nancy Elizabeth Fincher) were: NANCY CAROLINE DORMAN (1833-1859) m. James M. Higgins. Three children: Unknown infant, Elizabeth and Wylie. Nancy Caroline died from complications of childbirth with Wylie. Children were raised by her mother, Elmina Jones Dorman. ALLEN DORMAN (1835-1908) m. Aurilla Vickers (daughter of Charles Dean Vickers and Martha G. Edmonds). These are my great-great grandparents. Moved to Randolph County, AL; back to Chambers, then to Blount County. Allen was a school teacher and also a chaplain during the Civil War. He and Rilla are buried in Nixon Chapel Cemetery, Marshall Co., AL. Children were Linton Dorman (m. Carrie Bynum), Martha (Mattie) Dorman m. Isaac Blake (my great-grandparents), Lula V. Dorman (m. Stephen Robinette), Ella C. Dorman (m. James M. Ellison), Allen J. Dorman (dead end on this one), Anna Laura Dorman (m. Thomas Benjamin Gilbreath), Lena K. Dorman (m. Linton Edward Dean), and Aurilla Mae Dorman (m. Ollie Calvin York.) JESSEE C. FINCHER DORMAN (1837-1920) m. Martha Ann Adeline Abernathy, dau of Samuel Abernathy and Gennett (Jane) Boyd. Boyds were from SC and Meriwether Co. No children. WILLIAM LEONARD DORMAN (1842-1901) m. Laura Beecher Montague Moss. Children were Wiley Frank (m. Louise Evelyn Reneau) and William Leslie Dorman. SANFORD MITCHELL DORMAN (1844-1844) died as an infant and was buried in the first grave in the Dorman cemetery. EDNA ANN DORMAN (1839-1899) m. Capt John W. Bonner. Had five sons and two daughters, names unknown. HENRY RUDOLPH DORMAN (1850-1912) m. Pyrene C. Webb. Two children from census are Alzada V. and Dovey. ELMINA CATHERINE (KATE) DORMAN (1852-1931) m. Capt Henry (Harry) Gaylord. No children. LOUISA CORDELIA DORMAN (1854-1940) m. Pleas Hill Lawson. One child, Lessie. LEANDRU MONTGOMERY DORMAN (1856 -? ) name seen also as "Leander" but appears in Wiley's will as LeAndru and in census as Leandrew. Family stories say: "Lee went to Arkansas to visit an aunt. It was said he went for a walk in the mines and was never seen or heard from again. His overcoat was found near an old abandoned mine shaft. It was thought he might have been robbed and killed and thrown down an old shaft." I have a few obituaries for this family which I found in Allie Abernathy's Scrapbook (copied from Chambers County newspapers). Will be submitting them to the ALGebWeb Archives as soon as I can find a spare minute. Would love to correspond with others related to this family. Judy Fowler Kilgore Newnan, GA
If you recently upgraded your AOL to version 9.0 that might be part of the problem. The new version puts pictures and attachments in hide mode and you need to select to see them. The place to do this is usually in the top upper right of your mail in blue text where it says show images and enable links. Click on that and you should get the pictures and attachments although they will be on the bottom left of your mail instead of imbedded in the mail. Good Luck
Thanks, Debra, for explaining that to me. In the several digests I have been on in past years (not on any at the present time), I have never received the mailings as an attachment. They just come in a regular e-mail, with all the messages listed one after the other. Maybe my being on AOL has something to do with it. Judy
Shirley, Maybe I'm mistaken, but it was my understanding that the Roots-L lists did not allow attachments. Could the old worm have made its way to the Digest? Surely not. If the policy has changed, someone please let me know. Judy
My Outlook Express email will not allow me to open the attachments included in the Digest list. Anything we can do?
