The plan of the house consists of two large rooms divided by a central hall. Large brick chimneys covered with stucco are at each end of the house. Interior walls are ceiled with nicely fitted tongue & grooved pine boards. A chair rail and wainscoat are also present. Two shed rooms divided by a porch have been removed from the rear. P. Greer House & David E. and Lula Greer Denney House First Avenue N.W. (formerly Warren Street) LaFayette, Alabama Samuel Preston Greer (1844-1904) and wife Susan Lavenia Thomason Greer (1847- 1928), came to LaFayette from Union Springs, Alabama in the early 1870s. They soon purchased an old Greek Revival house with acreage west of the courthouse on Warren Street. Greer, a businessman, prospered in LaFayette and about 1875 remodeled his home in a style more fashionable with the times. The house has nine large rooms with eight fireplaces. Walls were made of plaster with excellent woodwork and trim. Obviously this had once been a fine old home of the Greer family. When visited in 1997, the old house was in a state of ruin and decay. Image 1. This architectural rendering shows the front exterior of the Greer House as it most probably looked when built, possibly as early as 1840. Image 2. This ca. 1907 photograph shows the front exterior and yard of the Greer House after being remodeled into a more fashionable Victorian style around 1875. (From the collection of Robert Denney) Image 3. The photographer made this photograph ca. 1944 while standing at the end of the drive on Warren Street. The cook's house can be seen at the left side of the yard. (From the collection of Robert Denney) Image 4. Winter, 1997. The old house has seen better days but still presents a grand profile. They first settled on lands at Oakbowery but sometime between 1850 and 1860, moved two miles east of LaFayette and established a plantation there. The 1860 Chambers County census shows Caleb Holloway as a well-to do-planter with real estate valued at $15,000 and 44 slaves. The Holloways most likely built this handsome Greek Revival house about 1855. Four square columns resting on masonry pillars across the front porch give the house a typical "old south" look. Large double doors with sidelites and transom are at each end of a 12 ft. wide central hall. Two large rooms approximately 18 ft. square with ceiling heights of 13 ft., are on each side of the hall. Each room has a fireplace served by an exterior chimney. Walls are of plaster and ceilings are of wide tongue and groove pine boards. Wood trim and mantles are of good craftsmanship and typify the simpler lines found in Greek Revival architecture. A back porch extends across the rear of this house with shed rooms at each end. The original kitchen was in the back yard but has been destroyed. The Holloways had no children. They chose to be buried on their property across the road from their home. Tall, elaborate marble monuments enclosed within an ornate iron fence marked their final resting place for almost one hundred years. Sadly, some demented person at the controls of a bulldozer all but obliterated this site. Twisted pieces of iron fencing and huge blocks of marble lay askew in a large mound of dirt are all that remain of this once beautiful cemetery. Hopefully this grand old house will meet a kinder fate. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/alfiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb

    3. Marie, Augustus Clay Finley(1/1847-3/11/1913), my great grandfather, married Mary Ann McClain(10/14/1850-12/2/1901) on 3/18/1873. My records show that Mary Ann was born in Stroud, AL. and died in Chambers Co. They had 6 children. Both Augustus Clay and Mary Ann are buried in Macedonia PB Church Cemetery at Marcoot, near Lafayette. I would welcome information about Mary Ann.
