According to reports reaching Roanoke, three white men, Bill STEWART, Euc SIMONTON and Jack HARRIS, living near Five Points, went to the home of a negro [sic] named Luke SMITH and entered into conversation with him. Later, it is said, STEWART began firing into the negro’s house, and the negro returned fire with a shotgun, SIMONTON was wounded and it seems that HARRIS, while trying to rescue him, was also shot. He died the following day. SIMONTON died Monday night. STEWART fled, but we understand was later put under bond. The negro escaped. The whole affair is shocking and is greatly lamented by everyone. It is said that liquor purchased in Girard, in one of Alabama’s local option counties, played its part in the death of these two young men who had many friends. ---------- The evils of liquor are highlighted during this vocal period leading to enactment of prohibition with the Eighteenth Amendment to the Constitution in 1918. Many wagons were parked all around, trade was brisk and good feeling prevailed. As we mingled with our farmer friends we were glad to hear the cheerful note that rang out in their talk; only an occasional despondent note was touched. Of course, now and then we found someone who had caught no vision of the silver lining to the cloud, but these were exceptions to the general rule. This optimistic spirit means much in every way; facing adverse conditions with a smile lightens every burden and brings to the front our very best efforts. Corn-planting time is on now and many an acre will be put in this week. We have read this somewhere from the pen of Thos. E. WATSON as he writes on corn- planting time: “Close the eye a moment and look at the picture fancy paints. Every field in the South is there. And in each the pictures are the same, the steady mule and the steady man, and the pattering feet of the children dropping corn. In these furrows lies the food of the republic; on these fields depend life and health and happiness.” —[Originally published in the] LaFayette Sun. E. Grace — a Tribute ---------------------------- When Mrs. S. E. GRACE died at her home in LaFayette March 19th one of God’s good angels of mercy left the earth for her eternal home in heaven. But she did not die, in the real sense of the word, for her life of loving labor for her people will send its influence on through the ages, while her memory will abide as an incense sweet in the hearts of all who knew her. Mrs. GRACE was over eighty years of age, yet her heart was young and her hands were full of gentle deeds until the last. She was the friend of everybody, particularly the poor and distressed. She was the mainstay of the Presbyterian church in her town, and was through all the years since the Civil War the leading spirit in showing honor to the Confederate soldiers, dead and living. Memorial Day in LaFayette without the presence of Mrs. GRACE will prove a sad occasion, indeed. To one who, as a boy, knew Mrs. GRACE and had knowledge of her christian [sic] charity, so modestly, so continuously dispensed by word and deed, it does not seem strange that there should be a place called “Heaven,” on whose shores the tired feet of God’s own children rest when the storm is passed and the journey done. Into that haven such a soul as hers has come. And we may be sure that the entry into port was made with rejoicing upon her part, amid the welcome plaudits of the heavenly hosts and of the saints whose lives she had touched and blessed. On this side, tears and love and flowers follow the mortal dust as far as human feet may go. We know of no one more than she whose sweet, unselfish character more fitly expresses the sentiment of Tennyson’s beautiful poem, “Crossing the Bar,” written in the author’s extreme old age, rich in simple trust and human faith: Sunset and evening star, And one clear call for me; And may there be no moaning of the bar, When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep, Too full for sound or foam, When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark. For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. ---------- She is referred to as “Sallie” GRACE in an article titled STEVENSON IN LAFAYETTE published in The Roanoke Leader, 5 May 1915, p.4. Harris, perhaps the oldest citizen in Chambers County, was born April 3, 1833 and died Nov. 27, 1919, making his stay on earth nearly 87 years. Up to the time of his death he was active in mind and body and his hearing and eye- sight were good. He was married in 1870 to Mrs. Pop Werrell. He was a kind and affectionate husband. Although she has been dead 30 years he proved that he loved and cherished her memory by his regular monthly visits to her gave. "Uncle Joe" as he was well and favorably known, numbered his friends by his acquaintances. He was of a cheerful disposition, quiet and unassuming, and for more than 70 years a consistant and honored member of the Methodist church. He inlisted in the Confederate Army as a private but was promoted to second lieutenant in Co. C, in the old 14th Alabama regiment. Too much cannot be said of him as a soldier. He was brave and true and never murmured of hardships or short rations. He was wounded in the Battle of the Wilderness, May 6, 1864. The writer of this sketch, who knew him personally for over 60 years, never heard him speak ill of any one or do any harm to any one person. He spent most of his life in this community. He leaves one sister, Mrs. S.R. Talley, and a host of relatives and friends to morn his death. He was laid to rest in the Rock Spring Cemetery after very appropriate services conducted by Rev. Holmes of LaFayette. Peace to thy ashes, "Brother Soldier." An Old Veteran Additional Comments: Joel D. Harris was born April 3, 1833 in Georgia. He was the son of Micajah Harris & Nancy Terry who married April 15, 1815 in Morgan Co., GA.
