Daniel Hart (1826 - 1871). The Harts built the log portion of this house, which is the room on the left side of the hall in the mid 1840s. The room was large with low ceiling, with an enclosed staircase in one corner that led to a 1/2 story sleeping room above. A wide fireplace served by an outside chimney built of rock and brick was located on the east gable end of the house. Later after the Hart's deaths, the family of Eli Jefferson Howell (1842 - 1911) and wife Mary F. Belcher Howell (1849 - 1938) lived here. E. J. Howell was a Confederate veteran, having served as Pvt. in Co. "A" 10th Confederate Cavalry during the War Between the States. It is most likely that during the Howells occupancy the house was enlarged by building another large room opposite the log room, separated by a hall or dogtrot. Shed rooms were at the rear of the house, with a kitchen or "cook house" in the back yard. When this photograph was made, ca. 1907, E.J. Howell's son and family were living here. James W. Howell (1867 - 1933) and wife Dura F. Hart Howell (1873 - 1958) are pictured with four children and a horse in the above photograph. Mrs. Howell was a granddaughter of Benjamin Hart. The Harts and Howells are all buried at nearby Macedonia Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The log portion of the house still stands on timberland owned by the Clarks. He was born c1790. Samuel was an "Indian Trader" according to family stories and he took an Indian wife. He was an early settler of the Indian trading post, Franklin, now known as West Point, Georgia, and a pioneer settler of Chambers County, Alabama. His wife was called a "half breed", and the family would not let "that half- breed" sleep in the house. She had to sleep in the barn. This unfortunate woman is buried beside her husband at the Williams Family Cemetery in Chambers County, Alabama. Samuel is said to have assisted in the removal of the Creek Indians to the west on the Trail of Tears. If that is true then he would have been a conductor for the Alabam Immigrating Company, the company responsible for the move. Samuel also is listed as being appointed guardian of an Indian child, the daughter of Emathlar Yoholo, who had passed away. Usually, this was an attempt to gain control of property left to the child at the parent's death, and this was most likely Samuel's motivation. Records indicate that he associated with men notorious for mistreating the Indians. Samuel Williams died in the 1860's in Chambers County, Alabama. He had no children. A son of his brother, David, was named "Samuel" in his honor. He settled with his family in the county in 1832, the year the county was opened up for settlement. The land that the family settled on was, according to family tradition, one mile long and five miles wide. The family rode the finest horses and dressed in the finest clothes. A 25 acre section of the original land is still in the family today and the eighth generation of the family still resides on it. Aaron was born in South Carolina around 1770. His father's name is unknown. His wife died in Georgia before the move to Alabama. Her name is unknown. Aaron's known children are Aaron, Jr.;Samuel;William;Elleanor;and David Sherrill Willliams. Aaron is listed on tax records in Greene County and Jasper County, Georgia. He also resided in Harris County, Georgia, just prior to his move to Alabama. Aaron died in Chambers County, Alabama, in the 1850's. He is buried at the Williams Family Cemetery in Chambers County, Alabama. The cemetery is located off Chambers County Road 500 just across from the site of the log cabin built by Aaron and his family in 1832. This cabin was in sight of an Indian village. His will was the first will filed in the county. His birthdate and place of birth are unknown. Avington was closely related to Aaron Williams, David S. Williams, and Samuel Williams, who were also pioneer citizens of the county. There is a possibilty that Avington is the father of Aaron, but there is no documentation, at this time, to prove that theory. Oral family history states that this Williams Family came from Ireland to the Carolinas. Avington is listed in the tax records of Greene County and Jasper County, Georgia. He was also a Justice of the Peace in Harris County, Georgia, around 1830. Avington died in 1833. He is believed to have been the first person buried at the Williams Family Cemetery in Chambers County, Al. The family had made a slow migration across Georgia. This movement stopped in Chambers County, where the family still lives eight generations later. It is possible that Avington was the driving force that kept the family on the move and that with his death the family finally settled down. David S. Williams, the son of Aaron, named a son Avington Williams, in this mans honor. There is at least one other person in Georgia during the mid 19th century named Avington. At this no connection has been made to that Avington with the Williams family in Chambers County, Alabama. Alabama Avenue LaFayette, Alabama According to William Davidson's "Pine Log and Greek Revival", John A. Frazer (1800-1861) built this house in LaFayette ca. 1845. In the 1880s the house was bought by Walter B. Wood, Sr. (1858-1930) and wife Addie Ware Wood (1860- 1944). The Woods remodeled the house at this time to reflect the tastes of the Victorian period. In 1915, the Woods yet again remodeled the house in a Colonial Revival style. Since 1945, it has been used as a funeral home and is now Jeff Jones Funeral Home.
