    1. Re: [ALCHAMBE-L] Confederate Soldiers from Chambers Co and thereabouts
    2. The book is titled "CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS FROM CHAMBERS COUNTY, ALABAMA AND THEREABOUTS", second edition 2004. The first edition was published in 1993. Both editions were done by the Chattahoochee Valley Historical Society, Inc. and the editor is Carl Summers, Jr. Sorry but I don't have the address of the Chattahoochee Valley Historical Society. The cost of the book is around $30.00. It contains many pictures and has a good bit of information about the men from Chambers and surrounding counties who served during the War Between the States. There are also short biographies of many people from that area. It is very interesting. It is also well indexed. 1. Eli WELCH and Sarah Ann HUDMAN Welch and ten children - Chambers County, AL
    2. I am searching for information on Eli WELCH, born 1812, in SC and his wife, Sarah Ann HUDMAN Welch, born 1819, in Greene County, GA. Eli WELCH and Sarah Ann HUDMAN married on August 28, 1830, in Chambers County, AL. Both Eli and Sarah and many of their descendants lived and are buried in Lafayette County, MS. But there must be descendants still living in Chambers, Lee, and Tallapoosa County, AL. Several WELCH siblings married in Chambers and Tallapoosa County, AL. I do not have much information on this WELCH family in SC and Chambers County, AL during their earlier years before settling in Lafayette County, MS in the mid 1800's. I have a considerable amount of information on some of Eli WELCH and Sarah Ann HUDMAN's descendants, all ten of whom were born in Chambers County, AL between 1839 - 1859. I have been researching for almost two years now and have 685 pages of this WELCH LineAge and would like to add a great deal more. Eli WELCH and Sarah Ann HUDMAN Welch had ten children, six sons and four daughters. All ten children were born in Chambers County, AL between 1839 and 1859. 1 F Mary Elizabeth Ann WELCH, born December 15, 1839-1840, in Chambers County, AL. 2 M William WELCH, born about 1842, in Chambers County, AL. 3 M Thomas WELCH, born about 1844, in Chambers County, AL. 4 M James Howell “Hal” WELCH, Jr., born July 5, 1845, in Chambers County, AL. 5 F Serena Sarah Clementine WELCH, born September 18, 1847, in Chambers County, AL. 6 F Nancy Ann “Annie” Haseltine WELCH, born November 22, 1849, in Chambers County, AL. 7 M Daniel “Dan” Noonal WELCH, born March 29, 1852, in Chambers County, AL. 8 M Mathew Eli WELCH, born February 1854, in Chambers County, AL. 9 F Matilda “Tildie” Ann Evangeline WELCH, born ____, 1855, in Chambers County, AL. 10 M John Nicholas WELCH, born November 27, 1859, in Chambers County, AL. ANY information on this WELCH family would be greatly appreciated. The original spelling of their surname was WELSH. I basically have little information on William WELCH b. 1842, and Thomas WELCH born 1844 and would appreciate if anyone has any information on these two WELCH's. Eli WELCH was born 1812, in SC and has several known siblings, all of whom were born in SC (presumably Chesterfield County). There are many WELCHs born in South Carolina. Eli WELCH and his known siblings are: 1 M Robert WELCH, born 1808, in SC. 2 M Eli WELCH, born in 1812, in SC. 3 M Henry WELCH, born 1813, in SC. 4 M William WELCH, born 1815, in SC. 5 M George Howell WELSH, born December 25, 1816, in SC. (GHW and family continued to use the WelSh spelling and are buried with the WELSH spelling) 6 M John WELCH, born 1817, in SC (may be a cousin). 7 M Nicholas WELCH, born 1817-1818, in SC (may be a cousin). 8 M James Pinkney WELCH, born in 1819, in SC. 9 M James B. WELCH, born 1820, in SC/GA (may be a cousin). 10 F Elizabeth WELCH, born in 1827, in GA (only known sister) (married A. WATERS). Chesterfield County, SC seems to be the most likely county in South Carolina where these WELCHs were born and lived. There were also many WELCHs in Sumter and Lee County, SC. Many of these brothers came from SC to Chambers, Lee and Tallapoosa County, AL. Some went to Butler County, GA. I will be glad to share my information which I am working on daily and is "A Work In Progress." I am going to a Eli WELCH descendants' family reunion on September 5 in Oxford, MS. Hopefully, I will gather a great deal more information while there. I do NOT know the names of Eli's parents nor where they were born and where they died. There is a widowed Mary Welch, about 58-60 years of age, in the Chambers County, AL 1850 Census, but I do not have proof that it is his/their mother. Eli's parents most likely would have been born in the 1780's. The oldest child I have listed is Robert WELCH, born 1808, in SC. I do not know if there were children born before 1808. This should be sufficient information to ascertain if anyone in Chambers County has information on this WELCH family. Again, I would be grateful if anyone has any information they would like to share and I will share in return. Thank you so much in advance for your assistance. He had been a faithful member of the M. E. Church from his youth. He was buried in the cemetery of Harmony Church, where his membership was placed when he was a young man. The Masons and Odd Fellows had charge of the service. He was a member of both fraternities and was loved by all the brethern that met with him. He was never tired of the orders of which he was a member and he showed that he had the spirit by being present at all the meetings. Brother C. H. Reese, his pastor, conducted the funeral assisted by A. C. Thomas,Baptist minister of the community. A large crowd attended the service showing that Brother Law had not lived in bain, He had many very warm friends not only in the community where he lived but most everywhere he went. He made friends. Brother Law always stood for the highest ideals for his community and its best interests. He never grew tired of doing service for the chuch and school. It can be said of him that he did all that he could. He was not one that stored his treasures where moth and rust doth corrupt of thieves break and steal. Though he provided well for his household he never let the things of this world come first, always remembering First seek ye the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you. He gave liberally to the chuch and all good causes. Truly this man was prepared for the summons from on high and has gone to await the coming of loving family and his many friends. W. Law, aged 82 years, pioneer citizen of Milam county (Texas) and Confederate soldier, died at his home near Ad Hall on Friday Nov. 21, 1924, fol lowing a short illness due to declining health and his advanced age. With the passing of Chas. W. Law another name is stricken from the ever lessening roll of the pioneers. Taps are sounded for another of the gallent who followed the fortunes of the Southland and never forsook its heritage. He was a Confederate soldier and until his honest purpose was crossed and it's brave armies defeated, he was a gallant figure in the struggle. Chas. W. Law was born in Chambers county, Alabama, May 26, 1842. His parents lived there when Georgia and Alabama were in a wild state and infested with savages and to him was given the spirit of the pioneers who carved from this domain the now matchless republic. They extended the borders of civilization, bearing a part in the settlement of the West. He served four years in the Confederate army, enlisting in April 1861 as a member of the Wetumpka Light Guards and was two years in the infantry under direct command of Stonewall Jackson and knew the personal loss of the gallant commander felt by thousands who came under his courageous leadership. He took part in all the major battles fought by Jackson and was a witness to the battle between the Merrimac and the Monitor and later witnessed the blowing up of the Merrimac, the first iron clad of naval warfare. During the second two years of the war he was under the command of Fighting Joe Wheeler's cavalry. When they learned of the surrender of Lee in company with companions he fought his way through the country and came to Texas, never surrendering to the union forces. Chas. W. Law came to Texas in 1872 and settled near Old Independence in Washington county, and moved to Milam county in 1885 and settled near Ad Hall where he died on Friday November 21, 1924. He was first married to Miss Sophronia Batchelor and to this union 11 children were born, 8 of whom surrive. They are: Mrs. H. C. Smith, Witchita Falls; Mrs. Addie Segars, Ranger; Mrs. Texie Daily, Temple; Sam W. Law, Cameron; C. W. Law, Jr.,Elgin; Geo. B. Law, Rosebud; and Asa and Clyde Law of Killen. His second marriage was to Mary Laferney and to this union was born three children, two of whom survive. They are W. H. Law fo Waco and Ed. Law of Ad Hall. He was a devout member of the Baptist church for many years. The funeral was conducted by Rev. H. R. MacFadyen of Cameron Presbyterian chuch and the body was intered in Corinth Cemetery.
