    1. [ALCALHOU] Calhoun County Residents
    2. Prescilla Sanders
    3. I am looking for information on the following people that lived in Calhoun County. Leland Swink joined the Confederate forces with other men from Calhoun County.( 50th) He was wounded at the Battle of Chickamagua , supposedly died at a military hospital and was buried in a nearby cemetery. Would like to have information about him, he is my gggrandfather. Jonas Swink was a traveling preacher. He died in Calhoun County in about 1879 and is buried at 10 Mile Island Cemetery. He was the son of Leland Swink. Sargent Griffin lived in Calhoun County, and I was told by my aunt that he owned a plantation in the County. I also believe he may have given land to a church there. Maybe land for a cemetery. He is the father - in - law of Jonas Swink. He was also a descendant of William Griffin of the American Revolution. Emily Griffin Swink Jowers. This is my ggrandmother. I believe she may have been born in Calhoun County. She married Jonas Swink and had 3 children. Leona and Leland were twins, and they had a younger brother named Avery. After Jonas died, she married Clem Jowers. They had 2 daughters Clemmie and Maudie I believe. She is also buried at 10 Mile Island Cemetery by her 1st husband Jonas Swink. If you know anything of this family, I would greatly appreciate you sharing the stories with me. Many thanks, Prescilla Sanders Perryton, Texas

    3. Evelyn, I am working on our Graham line...Rebecca Jane Graham is the daughter of John R. Graham and Elizabeth Calloway. I have Rebecca's siblings as William, Emily, Margaret, Frances, Victoria, John, Davis, Thomas, and Lorena. Rebecca Jane Graham married Samuel Penland March 7, 1861. She was born January 28, 1840 and died March 1898. Samuel was born Nov. 3, 1834 and died November 14, 1905. Samuel is buried in the Carmel Presbyterian Cemetery, Cherokee Co., Alabama. I have not found Rebecca Jane's burial site...nor was I aware of their children. I don't have any information on a Dorcas. My father-in-law, Thomas L. Graham, was originally from Anniston, Calhoun County, Alabama. He would have been a wealth of information but unfortunate for all of us he died before I started this project. 3. Paul, I read your post with GREAT interest! The two brickwalls in my research are MOORE and METCALF. I have a Samuel E. METCALF, who according to a pension application filed after his death, was born in 1818 in Hamilton Co, TN. He first appears on census records in Benton Co, married to the former Fannie PHILLIPS, and they had several children. At the time of his death, Samuel was a Benton Co Constable, and he was killed by accident at the sheep farm he owned. According to the newspaper account of his death, the fellow that killed him was there to kill Samuel's half-brother, Hiram MOORE. I have no clue as to where the MOORE comes from, but it's there. Also, Samuel's daughter, Lydia Emily METCALF, married Sidney Marion MOORE, son of David MOORE and the former Louisa CHANDLER. David is my other brickwall! His pension application states he was born in 1826 in AL....That's it! David first appears on census records in Cherokee Co, AL, but little else is known about him before then. David fought in the Civil War and never returned to his wife and children, opting to marry a woman by the name of Sophronia Ray in Gattman, MS. David lived the rest of his life til 1901 (?) in Lamar Co, AL. I have been told my whole life that we have "Indian ancestors," but it wasn't where I was led to believe it was, but I am 99% sure that it comes from the MOORES! My great-great aunt, Nancy Moore Lowery, daughter of Sidney Marrion Moore and Lydia Emily Metcalf had EVERY characteristic of an Indian and the more she aged, the clearer it became....The same is true for my own mother! Does any of this ring a bell for you? I surely hope it does....E-mail me for further information! Thanks! Pruning the family tree ISN'T allowed! (Mainly a note to MY relatives!) 2. Note-I am having problems posting, so please excuse if you are getting multiple copies of this. Paul Betty, Thanks for the reply to my query. I am somewhat familiar with your Moses Elliott and, for a long time, I suspected that he was my Jacob's father. But now feel otherwise. I assume that you know Herman L. Mingee Lee. He has done a lot of work on your Moses' line and he recently sent me a copy of his research data. I think that my Jacob Elliott must have been connected to an Elliott who was passing through the Benton (now Calhoun) area on their way from (possibly) Mid TN to the West. I believe that an Archibald and a William Elliott passed through Benton in the 1830s. I know that Jacob left Randolph County, AL, in c. 1848 for AR and in 1850 they in Tippah Co., MS. His wife, Mary Moore Elliott, died in AR in 1854 (apparently at childbirth). Jacob then came back to MS (Itawamba) and married a Lydia Ashley, and in 1860 they were in LA (Winn Parish). I lost them after that. As I said earlier, I believe that Jacob possibly was the son of a William who was the grandson of an Archibald Elliott who had settled on Fishing Creek, Chester Co., SC, in the mid 1700s. Jacob was supposedly of Cherokee blood. >From your research, does any of this sound familiar to you, or anyone? Paul WhitePaul@aol.com

    1. [ALCALHOU] Moores and Elliotts in Benton, 1830s
    2. Samuel and Anna Moore and Jacob G. Elliott were in Benton County, AL, in the mid 1830s. Samuel (b. SC, c. 1797) was a Baptist Minister and he married his daughter, Mary, to Jacob Elliott (b. c. 1816-18) there in 1836. Before 1840 both families were living near Delta in Randolph (area now Clay) County. Samuel was the Minister at the Shiloh Church at Delta for many years. Around 1848, the Elliotts moved from Randolph toward AR, but in 1850 they were living in Tippah Co., MS. Tradition has it that Jacob was from TN and was of Cherokee blood. I suspect that he was the son of a William Elliott and grandson of an Archibald Elliott from Chester Co., SC. This William Elliott appears to be in the middle TN counties of Jackson and White in the 1820s. Surely this Samuel Moore and Jacob Elliott were connected to other Moores and Elliotts in this area. Does anyone know of a connection or anything about their backgrounds? Paul R. White WhitePaul@aol.com
