    1. Re: [ALCALHOU] Steel Mill in Anniston, early 1900's
    2. Joseph C. Clements
    3. There was a foundry in Anniston at that time. Samuel Nobel and General Alfred Tyler owned it. General Tyler was a general in the Federal Army during the civil war. Samuel Nobel was in the foundry business, I don't know where Nobel was from, but he moved a foundry from Rome, Georgia to Anniston back before 1880. I have two connections to this in that my great-grandfather, (on my mothers side) Thomas M. Herron worked for the Tyler's and Nobel's. In fact thomas laid out the street in what is now known as old Anniston. There is a street there named for him, Herron Circle. The next connection is that also on my mothers side, my great-grandfather, Cornelius McKeever was the person who "poked the stock" in the early mornings to get the fires going again before the day crew came in to work, Can't tell you the name of the foundry, but Anniston has a history and genealogy section to their library, called the "Alabama Room" and I have always found these people very helpful. You might give them a call for more information. In fact, Thomas own a lot of the land in what is called Fort McClellan and the government took it by condemnation. 3. I am looking for info on John and Samuel Southeren who were listed as stepchildren to George W. Smith in the 1880 Calhoun census. John is 6 years of age and Samuel is 3 years of age. I am trying to determine if this is the same John Southern who married in 1891 in Etowah Co (Gadsden) to Mary Wary. Any info on this family would be helpful. The census also shows George's father-in-law, Samuel (last name unable to read) looks like Crumhilton????? and his 17 year old son as living with George. Does anyone have a clue what this last name could possibly be? Thanks for your help. Linda Southern Crook vmpanther@msn.com
