I just received my gggrandfather Sam Rouse death certificate in the mail. I started reading through it, but nothing makes sense with what I have from a 1910 bullock county census. For one his death certificate for the year 1937, has him as 70, which made him born in 1867 and not 1863, with the math I figured for it. The census has his birthdate as Dec 1863. That's a 4 year difference. Which should I believe? Another thing, it has his dad as Prince Rouse and mother's maiden name as, Huldie or Haldie or whatever, couldn't really make it out. Where is Fitzpatrick in Alabama? That's where he was born, according to the death certificate. How would I find what the initials D.K. mean, this is what they put for his parents birth place? Or if it's even in Alabama. So you can see my dilema....need advise on I can do to get past this obstacle. Frustrated in CT Angela Underwood-Markes
I am interested in information on the family of Robert McGrady and John Smith of Bullock/Pike County Alabama. Robert McGrady married John Smith's sister Nancy. They all were from Butt's County Georgia as well as from Fairfield County South Carolina. Anyone researching any part of this line, please email me. delbra
Hi Angela-- Discrepencies of four years in age between the 1900 census and a death certificate 37 years later shouldn't be cause for much surprise--I've seen much worse. Find him in 1870, 1880, 1910, and 1920, and compare what you see in those to the 1900 census and what the death certificate says. I'll bet very few of those six sources will agree exactly--I'd be most inclined to put credence in the earlier records. If his momma said he was six years old in the 1870 census, I'd be more likely to believe he was born 1863/64 than I'd believe what his death certificate says many many years later (and remember that he didn't give the info for the death certificate; whoever did give it may not have known exactly how old he was!). Fitzpatrick is in the NW part of Bullock Co., AL, about ten miles WNW of Union Springs, quite close to the Macon Co. line and not far from Montgomery Co. Also, D.K. stands for "don't know"! It's one of the more common things to find in death certificate blanks, in my experience!
