Response to Annette's comments Finding anything in Bullock is a miricle. The early marriage records are filed by date. If you don't have a date, you don't have a prayer! >>>I did not find that to be true. The marriage records date back to the mid-late 1800's, Blacks and whites are in two separate books and they are alphabetized. The records are not difficult to use until the 1930's when all records are kept in the same book. The new books are not alphabetized and no appendix is included. I was told that all their census and vital data had been sent Montomery. >>>Census records are in Montgomery, approx a 30-45 minute ride away. Trying to find anything there is very difficult--except for land records and mortgages-- >>>I did not find the Court house difficult at all to use. There are indexed and alphabetized marriage records, birth records (difficult to follow, falling apart), death records, wills, 1898 Poll Tax records, prison records, hospital records, and voters registration records plus others. However, this is all that I can remember at this time. with only two clerks hanging about, getting any kind of knowledgable help is almost non-existant. >>>I found the clerks to be very friendly and helpful. However, they cannot spend the day in the back room with us. They were willing to assist me when I asked. They even pulled heavy books from the top shelves for me. You do need to spend a couple of days at a time there. I have been there on 4 or 5 separate occasions and sometimes have stayed all day from opening to close. I have even taken in a soda and candy bar in case I became so engrossed that I did not want to leave for lunch. If you are researching Bullock County, the court house is a must. Also, stop at the library down the street. They have a small genealogy section. They also have on file some alphabetized birth and death records published by the local historian and placed in the library for our use. Good luck on your research. On an ancestral journey Emily
Finding anything in Bullock is a miricle. The early marriage records are filed by date. If you don't have a date, you don't have a prayer! Some newspapers are bound... those from the early 1900's, I believe... don't know about older editions. Death records also, don't seem to be indexed. When I was there and asked (about a year and a half ago), I was told that all their census and vital data had been sent Montomery. Trying to find anything there is very difficult--except for land records and mortgages--which seem to be fairly well kept and organized; and, with only two clerks hanging about, getting any kind of knowledgable help is almost non-existant. Not meaning to discredit the clerks... they apparently weren't hired to keep track of old records, don't seem to be very familiar with what is there unless it is current stuff, and mainly only have time to focus on the business of the day. Good luck to anyone visiting this courthouse. Plan to spend a couple of days, at least. Annette Washington, DC

I don't know about turning papers over to the Historical Society, but I do know they threw two dumpsters of original documents away. One dumpster was salvaged by someone who understood the value of the documents to genealogists. Thank God for this person. He is cataloging and copying the information and making it available to researchers. My reasons for these questions are also twofold: We visited the courthouse about a year and a half ago and were told that all the old records of any kind had been turned over to the Historical Society (located next door to the present newspaper.) >>

Hi list, Have been very interested in the posts concerning the old newspapers at the courthouse in Union Springs. I have a couple of questions: How long ago exactly did anyone actually see the stacks of papers on the 3rd floor, and secondly, has anyone checked the present newspaper office to see if they have any of these papers or if they are all in the courthouse? My reasons for these questions are also twofold: We visited the courthouse about a year and a half ago and were told that all the old records of any kind had been turned over to the Historical Society (located next door to the present newspaper.) Turned out the Historical Society only had their mail delivered there, it is actually occupied by the C of C, and they could give us no further info on where to look for records. The newspaper office was closed on 3 separate visits. We were looking for copies of a newspaper called The Prohibitionist. If anyone has any later information on either newspapers or court records would love to hear from you. The only thing we were shown were the marriage records, which were still in the courthouse. Thanks to all of you, Evelyn Leslie

Margie, I'm forwarding these messages to Bullock Co. list. Maybe someone in the county would like to start a Southern Star project. It might be possible to video tape the fragile newspapers or use a digital camera. Bob Bryan
Sorry, I hit the send key too soon Are these the newspapers at the Union Springs, AL Court House? In July, the manager of the Union Springs Court House (Bullock Co.) records department said they were in the process of preparing to have their documents put on microfilm. Perhaps if enough of us contact him he will make sure the newspapers are also filmed. I was on the third floor in 1992 when I first began my research. At that time, I was too new at research and was overwhelmed. As I recall, It is extremely hot up there. I have returned to the court house and the area at least four additional times to do research, but I have not gone to the third floor again. I had planned to do so this year, but because of the amount of time I spent in Barbour and Coffee Co. I did not have time. Maybe next year... Emily

Can someone search the Bullock County death index for Annie or Anna Rouse(Underwood) who died in Union Springs, Alabama maybe between, 1911 to1920. Uncertain as to correct time. I need a death date on her for my records. Before ordering the death and or birth certificates. Thanks for the help in advanced.
Is it possible to do a birth record search with just a persons....name and year of birth, if that's all the information one has to go with? Please, advise.
