I first find my Griffin line in Barbour Co., AL, in 1860 (actually, there are a couple of deeds in the late 1850s). Where they lived in Barbour Co. became part of Bullock Co. by 1870. My gg-gf was James B. Griffin (supposedly, the "B" stood for "Bartlett"), born abt 1835, presumably in SC (according to the census). I think he married 1) Sarah Justice, 1857 and 2) Sarah Strother, 1862. He died abt 1877, and his widow and family moved to Warren Co., MS (near Vicksburg) by 1880. The fact that James B. Griffin's first child, a girl, was named Johnnie Eudora Griffin leads me to suspect that she was named for John A. Griffin and that he was James' father. Like James, this John A. Griffin was also born in SC (abt 1810), according to the 1860 census. I don't find him after the 1860 census. John A. had another son, Thomas Jefferson Griffin, b. abt 1838, SC. I can't find these Griffins in the 1850 census anywhere! I have looked in AL, GA, and SC. One of James B.'s granddaughters once wrote me that the family was from Ireland, but the census references about their birth all say SC. Sarah Strother's mother and siblings were in 1850 Pike Co. (where they lived in Pike Co. was taken in by Bullock Co.). Any help would be much appreciated. Jim Harmon home email: jrh@arkansas.net
Is there anyone that can do a obit lookup for me. Or can you tell me of anyone who personal lookups? If so, I'd appreciate the help. Thanks. Angie

I too have been to the courthouse. I had heard that documents had been trashed too before I went. Makes my skin crawl. I was particularly interested in finding a divorce record. Went to the City Clerks office. A man took me upstairs to a room with stacks of things. He said the divorce records were on the very top and he would look thru them and get back to me. Of course I never heard from him. I was very suprised at the library too, they didn't act like they knew what a genealogy department was. On the other hand, the library in Clayton has a very good g. department. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Thanks for that clarity, Emily. Obvioiusly, on my visit (to the Bullock courthouse), I must have been unorganized, in too much of a hurry, or just ignorant about what to look for... a fairly useless day spent. I dare say, a subsequent visit might prove more productive. Thanks for your insights. For the benefit of others researching Bullock, don't let my bad experience spoil your fun. Hi. I just went down to Bullock Co. last month trying to find information on my family and I too found it very difficult. The library only had the few books on the death records from the 1920s. I even asked the librarian if there was any more books on Bullock Co. and she said they had nothing. She told me to check the historical society, but she didnt know when it was open(which it wasnt by the way) or who to contact. I also went to the courthouse and found it somewhat difficult to find some things, but I did find some. I found the best place to find information on Bullock County is actually at the Troy Public Library. It just seems weird to me that a library in another county would have more information on Bullock County than the library in Bullock Co. does. John
