I am looking for information on slave owners in Bullock County. Does anyone know where I can get a list or does anyone have any information on the Morton's? I know they were slave owners in the 1800.
My family is from Bullock/Pike counties and I would like to know what county did free people register. I am aware of the Federal Reels for Huntsville, Alabama, but if anyone has researched this information and can truly share where did they register their accounts, it would be greatly appreciated. delbra delbra

For those of us who've struggled with trying to identify the location of an old town that has been renamed or you just don't know where it was located, I think I've identified a system that will work for you. In my research, my afro-american family members lived on property that was owned by someone else. In order to identify where it was located, I had to identify whose land it belonged to. One way of doing that was once I identified property owners names for the area, I went to this website: www.glorecords.blm.gov and once you enter the name and state of the person, they will practically give you a copy of the land record. You can even print this information out for your records. Once I had that, I obtained a copy of the highway map for the county. On this map, It gives you longitude and latitude and even grid information for the county. With this info, take the longitude, lattitude info from the property record, compare it with your map and it will give you the location of where the town was and what is there now. If you have been trying to determine if your family ever moved from place to place during the years for your census info, this will give you a wonderful idea of! where they were and who may have been around them since most houses located on property may not exist anymore or the housing numbers changed from year to year. It is my wish that this greatly helps many of you. delbra greatly helps many of you. = delbra

Dear friends and fellow searchers, Here is my ancestral line. I hope there may be someone who will have some information to add. In the early 1860s, great grandfather Silas lived in Macon Co., AL., near Creek Stand* and from there enlisted in the Confederate Army in March 1862 in the 15th Alabama Regiment.** After "the late unpleasantness," he lived in newly created Bullock Co. Then Barbour Co. >From Barbour Co., most of his children migrated to Coffee Co., where, two generations later, I was born. Hello: I'm looking for information on the Thompson family that owned a plantation in the area during the mid 1800's. In 1860 this area was considered as part of Macon county southern division until 1866 when Bullock county was established. I'm also seeking information on the overseer, Neal Graham who was my gggrandfather. He had a son born on the plantation named Phillip )Phil) Graham. Phillip's mother is listed as Frances Smith of Thompson Alabama according to his death certificate. I believe some of the Graham family is buried in Penile Methodist Church cemetery near the Macon county border just a few miles north of Thompson. I would greatly appreciate any assistance or suggestions. JoAnn

Hi folks. I am including a copy of a posting by Dorothy Ann Folmar of Pike Co. She has agreed to let me post it here as an example of what an article in the Heritage book might look like. Some of you have asked about what to include. I hope this helps. Pike Co. List: The following is an article (still in draft form), over 900 words in length, which I wrote re Christopher Stroud for the Heritage book. Articles can also be written on his children. Christopher Stroud Christopher ("Kit") Stroud is believed to have come to Pike County, AL from Columbus County, NC. His wife was Charity Wilson of Columbus County, a daughter of Edward Wilson & his first wife. Christopher first appears in the 1840 Census of Pike County, he & his wife being between 30 & 40 years of age with 2 boys under five years of age. Christopher is listed in the 1850 Census of Pike County as being 48, his wife Charity as 45, both born in NC, with children Edward, 14, David, 11, Nancy, 9, & William, 7, all born in AL. In the 1860 Census of Pike County, Christopher is living on Hallsville Post Office route. He & Charity are both listed as being 58 with children Nancy, 19, William W., 15, & an infant, Randolph, 3 months of age. Christopher & Charity's son Edward was living next door to them with his wife & baby. In the 1870 Census of Pike County, Christopher is listed as living in Goshen Hill Beat, 68 years of age & Charity as 65. Living in the house with them were Nancy, whose age was given as 22, Randolph, 12, William, 7, Charity Henderson, 2, & Martha Andrews, 12. Christopher & Charity lived at what was then called Pilley's Crossroads in the vicinity of the present intersection of Hwy 231 & Hwy 29 on the west side of Troy. Family names of some of their neighbors, extending from Troy to the present Youngblood, Shellhorn & Ansley areas & through Hallsville & the present Goodhope area to Goshen Hill, were Jordan, Fowler, Sims, Bailey, Stephens, Spivey, Carlisle, Morrison, Phillips, Folmar, Davis & Davison, Carnley, Rhodes, Clark, Redmon, Mills & McCormick. Christopher & Charity became members of Beulah Primitive Baptist Church in Troy on September 26, 1857, being admitted by letter. It is not known where their membership was prior to then. Beulah Church records state that Kit Stroud died when he was nearly 70 years of age & in 1874 the records state that Charity died in May of that year, her age unknown. Apparently Christopher & Charity had four children, Edward, David, Nancy & William. William died unmarried as a Confederate soldier at Gettysburg. He was in Co. "B" of the 8th AL Infantry Regiment. David served in Co. "I" of the 15th AL Infantry Regiment. Edward apparently served in both the 8th & the 15th Infantry Regiments. He was discharged due to disability. Edward Stroud was born about 1837. He married Mary Davis on May 13, 1858. He appears in the 1860 Census of Pike County as Edward Stroud, 23, born in AL, with wife Mary, 22, born in GA, & their son, George A., age 1, born in AL. According to a grandson of his brother David, Edward was killed in a train or railroad accident. He may have died before 1870. Edward & Mary's son George Anderson Stroud was born Mar. 19, 1859. He married Malissa Josephine Morrison in Pike Co., AL on Oct. 24, 1879. Their 10 children were Mary Frances Stroud Fowler born 1880, James Anderson Stroud born 1882, Minnie Dell Stroud Stephens born 1884, Mattie Ophelia Stroud Byrd Manning born 1887, George Washington Stroud born 1890, Verdie C. Stroud born 1891, John Darrie Stroud born 1894, Bertha Stroud born 1896, David D. Stroud born 1899, & Radar Lee Stroud born in 1902. David Stroud was born March 2, 1839. He married Martha Low or Lou Davison on July 26, 1866. She was born June 20, 1851, a daughter of "Uncle Jimmy Davison," who at one time owned a great amount of land in the Goshen Hill area of Pike County & northeastward. It was through this marriage that David & his descendants acquired land in the Goshen-Elam Church vicinity. Children of David & Martha were: 1) John J. Stroud born 1869, died 1886. 2) Nancy Arkansas Stroud, called "Cannie," born in 1872, married David Franklin Youngblood, died in San Antonio, TX on Feb. 24, 1859. 3) Lavada Lenora Stroud born 1874, married Robert Edward Bryan, died Feb. 26, 1953, buried at Elam Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery near Goshen, Pike Co., AL. 4) Alice Amelia Stroud born 1876, married Robert E. Lee Rushing, died Mar. 3, 1969 in San Antonio, TX. 5) Walter Wallace Stroud born Oct. 10, 1878, married Charlotte Lee Raley, died in TX. 6) William Wilson Stroud, twin of Walter Wallace Stroud, born Oct. 10, 1878, married Minnie Raley, died Feb. 7, 1961, buried at Elam Church Cemetery near Goshen, Pike Co., AL. 7) Minnie Dell Stroud born 1880, died 1881, buried at Elam. 8) Annie Bell Stroud born 1883, married Clem Bryan, died 1970 in West Palm Beach, FL. 9) Ruby Merle Stroud, born 1894, died 1898, buried at Elam. Nancy Stroud married first Willis Henderson on Dec. 5, 1867. They had a daughter Charity Henderson who appears as age 2, living with her mother in Christopher & Charity's household, in the 1870 Census. On February 27, 1872 Nancy married Charner Leach. Charner appears in the 1880 Census of Pike County as age 38 with wife Nancy 38 & his sons John, 9, Listian A., 7, Alva F., 6, his daughter Sarah E., 3, & Charity U. Henderson, age 13. Charner & Nancy moved to Texas about 1895. Nancy died on January 26, 1922 at age 74 & is buried at Pecan Wells Cemetery, Hamilton, Texas. Nancy Stroud Henderson's daughter Charity seems to have been called both "Charity U." & "Callie Ula" Henderson. She was born in 1868 at Goshen Hill & died Dec. 4, 1904. Her husband was John Ellis Sewell. Dorothy Ann Folmar Pike Co., AL Second posting by Dorothy. The Heritage books contain info about ancestors & also info about the history of churches, communities, clubs, organizations, etc. & also tributes & memorials. I think I heard someone talking at the last meeting about putting in info about the early railroads of Pike County, too. Hi folks. I have set up a Bullock Co query page at Gen Forum in addition to the one at Rootsweb. Gen Forum is sponsored by Family Tree Maker. You can place queries on both and get additional exposure. John and Jan Radford johnjanr@intersurf.com Baton Rouge, La
The Genforum webpage now has pages for posting queries relative to specific county locations of a state. (Most people are more familiar with their surname pages but now they also have many locations pages too.) If the county in which you are interested in not available yet, you can fill out a request form for that county to be added. There is already a page for Pike Co. but there is not one up yet for Bullock Co. I have requested that it be added but I think they probably need to hear from others before they will add one. If you are interested in posting Bullock Co. info to such a page, try this site: http://genforum.genealogy.com/al/counties.html and fill out the county request form at the bottom of the page. These are good sites for queries that you would like to remain posted for an extended period. Kim

Hi folks. I am sending this message out to you because it is very important to all of us that use Rootsweb services. We can use them for free, but it cost money to provide these free services. If you can send some financial support to them, you will yourself and many others just like yourself. I have enjoyed working with you and these lists and county home pages for several years now. I have made much more progress in my research through Rootsweb services than I could have ever done on my own. I copied the message below from Rootsweb with the intention of trying to help some. Good luck to all of you in your research. This is very important and I hope all of you take the time to heed it's message: When we launched RootsWeb, we assumed that our users would prefer to support us as much as they were able, in exchange for a site open to all, without banners plastered all over everything and without having resources locked up (as is done at other genealogy sites), available only for fees on the order of $60 per year. Instead, people can support RootsWeb for as little as $12 per year. We thus hoped that a reasonable fraction of our users, perhaps half of them, would support us in some way. And because we expected support from the community, we made promises to projects like USGenWeb that we would freely host them for the good of the Internet genealogy community. We have no intention of reneging on those early promises, but it has been difficult, because the community support we anticipated has not been there. Although people use the site like crazy, fewer than 7% of our users have chipped in to keep things going. The other 93%? Perhaps they're busy, or they're broke, or they won't pay unless they have to, or they don't think RootsWeb is useful. Who knows? But it means that RootsWeb has run at a cash flow loss. In simple terms, Karen Isaacson and Brian Leverich have donated not only their time as system administrators but a substantial part of their personal resources to provide the genealogical community with RootsWeb. The rest of RootsWeb's staff have also made substantial contributions. Because RootsWeb's costs exceed its income, we can't provide all the genealogical facilities we'd like to support. These could include online searchable databases of pension records, census indexes, vital records, or countless other valuable genealogical services that we could easily provide -- if only we could afford the staff to support them. And, ultimately, RootsWeb can't even continue to exist if we don't bring our costs and revenues into balance, something we want to have under control before the transition to non-profit status (as opposed to losing money status) is completed. We are doing what we can to remedy the situation. For instance, we are selling banner advertisements where we can. However, this alone will never provide enough revenue to cover the costs of the unbannered volunteer projects which consume most of RootsWeb's resources yet by their very nature produce no direct revenue, even as they provide invaluable content to the genealogical community. The new communities, from their inception, will be fully supported by advertising. They will be paying their own way. We can shift some of the costs of maintaining the Web, mailing list, GenConnect, and search engine servers onto the new communities, so that the new communities will subsidize a genealogical community that hasn't been supporting itself. Although we have been disappointed in the amount of financial support of the genealogical community, we would like to express our deep gratitude to the writer of the letter above and the other 7% of our users who have helped make RootsWeb available to the whole community. Without their support and encouragement, there would be no RootsWeb.
