    1. Indian relations ?Bailey/Gailey
    2. Delbra Barr
    3. I thought I'd share what little information I have of my Indian heritage. Other than my grandmother and older adults having been told how we are part indian through my grandmother's mother side, but no one ever told them how because of course in the south " grown fold never talked over chillin" !! Through researching my grandmother's family, the eldest member to date is Francis Cope who was born in Ga. My grandmother and the older family members remember Peter looked at least 1/2 Indian and my cousing Elizabeth remembers him taking her to some Indian either reservation areas in the now Bullock county area of Alabama. My hunch is Peter's mother was full Indian other than her name ?Lucy Bailey or Guilay as it appears on the 1870 census, there were no other afro american families in this area. Any leads similar to this name for this area is most appreciated. I have listed my compiled family names from 1820's - 1880. 1st Gen. 2nd Gen A. Francis Cope A1. MaryCope A2I Dock Cope ?B. Pinkey Cope A2. Doctor Marshall Cope A2II Mary Cope ?C. Winifred Cope A3. Ann Bird A2III Peter Cope A4. Mary Benson A3I Ella Bird A3I Ella Bird

    1. Native American Ancestry
    2. In response to Delbra's suggestion for names - My GGGGG-Father was Arthur SIZEMORE. He married Mary Bailey, daughter of a Creek Indian in what is now Baldwin Co. Very few of these ancestors of ours were allowed to keep their land after the Creek Indian War. Many of them who were not shipped to Oklahoma eventually migrated upward in AL through other counties. Their story is to be found on a number of websites (besides all the historical books written about them.) I would like to suggest one website: http://www.gulftel.com/~nobles/hathcock.htm. They have a number of census records online and you might find your surname there. Another great site with tons of links to more information is: http:www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/6247/links.htm#anchor1155150. This is Carol Middleton's site and she also hosts a mailing list devoted to the Creek Indian researchers on rootsweb. I hope these are helpful to some looking for Native American ancestors in other counties. Evelyn Sizemore Leslie

    1. Indian surnames for the s.e. Alabama areas
    2. Delbra Barr
    3. Because research of one's indian ancestry is VERY DIFFICULT, can someone share some surnames of those of them living in the Bullock, Pike, Macon, Barbour and Montgomery areas. Maybe we can link ourselves to them through their marriages. delbra

    2. In a message dated 7/6/99 9:05:25 PM, delbra@frontiernet.net writes: << can someone share some surnames of those of them living in the Bullock, Pike, Macon, Barbour and Montgomery areas. >> Here's mine: My Native ancestor--my gggrandmother--was Sally LENNARD (also spelled Sallie LEONARD). Sally married Olin SPEED (a mulatto or other mixed lineage), Jan/Feb 1884, in Hannon, Macon Co., AL. She and Olin lived for a time in Hannon, in the community called Speed Chapel, on Speed-owned land; but, she and Olin may have spent some years in Tuskegee. According to one census record, Sally was born in GA... don't know the county. I know that as an adult, when she and Olin weren't getting along, she went to live with her mother (and other relatives?) in Pensacola, FL. It was always said in family lore that Sally was Cherokee, but I believe she may have been Creek. She was a heavy smoker, who died relatively young, probably in Florida. She was brought back to Macon County and is supposedly buried at Fort Hull cemetary in the county. I have not learned anything more about Sally and would love to know who her parents were, her siblings, where she was born or any other information that would help me to learn about this ancestor. Any clues will be greatly appreciated. Annette Researching: HARPER, SPEED, GREEN/GREENE, LENNARD/LEONARD, TARVER, KROUSE, BESTEDA(ER), LANE and a few other allied families, found mostly in AL counties.

    3. Delbra and List, That's a Great idea! I would like to volunteer FREE image posting on my geneaology web site (URL address is: http://www.gentime.com/genealogy/index.html and would be glad to post any scanned images that anyone wishes to send as an attachment. I already have a GALLERY area built in the site. I run the site myself, it is free and there is no cost to anyone. It's just something I like to do. So, this could be a general place where peole could go to view images. If anyone would like to do this, but is unsure about scanning etc. they can alsways email me and and I would be glad to help them. 1. Fw: Photos of Unidentified persons
    2. Delbra Barr
    3. They were a number of persons having responded to my suggestion of photos of unidentified persons. It seems to me the best way to organize such a task, is to at least list the photos by the county, possible Town, and maybe even list who had the picture in their possession. Because photos are passed down from generation to generation, a person may not be able to link themselves to the face of the photo, but maybe the carrier of the picture will have a greater significance to the person trying to identify the individuals in the picture especially for the town they are researching. My family relocated to the North in the early 60's. Of course the older adults have wonderful memories to share about their childhood, but I can't possibly put a face on any of the persons they are speaking of. Only until I traveled to Alabama was I able to understand and even relate to their memories. Imagine trying to do so with families that grew up in the late 1800's - early 1900's. I am not a scholar to all of the computer servers and how they work, but if someone truly wants to help the genealogical process, it seems other than the internet, this could truly help everyone. delbra could truly help everyone. delbra

    3. My ancestor Martha Ann GRIZZLE (born 1828 GA--died 1900 Butler Co., AL) married in Russell Co., AL in 1844 to Eli R. WILLIIAMS. I believe (but have not proved) that Martha Ann was a daughter of Clement GRIZZLE (b. 1790's, d. 1840's poss. in Macon Co., AL). and a granddaughter of Wiley GRIZZLE, who died in the early 1820's in Warren Co., GA. Other presumed children of Clement and his unknown wife were these, most of whom spelled the name "GRISWOLD": Kinchen W. GRISWOLD (1813 GA--1875 Union Springs, AL) Frances (1817 GA--1899 Butler Co., AL) m. Noah RIGSBY 1839 Troup Co., GA Martin (b. ca 1824 GA; said to have been sheriff of Bullock Co., and to have returned to GA after 1870). Obediah G. 2. Cartographic Research Lab
    3. Dear Cemetery Researchers, I am writing to give you an update on our work regarding The Historical Atlas of Alabama, Volume II: Cemetery Locations by County. Allow me to first thank everyone who has contributed to the project thus far. I apologize for not being able to personally respond to every submission. We have received hundreds of submissions so far and it would not be humanly possible to respond to each contributor. While our work is not complete, the end for this edition is in sight. Some people have asked if it is too late to submit information. This is an ongoing project and as such we welcome submissions at any time. While your information may not find its way into this edition, it will be included in future editions of the Atlas. Once the Atlas becomes circulated publicly, we fully anticipate new submissions and corrections. We consider this edition to be the beginning, rather than the end, of the cemetery atlas project. We have kept track of snail mail and email addresses and will make you aware of the availability of the completed book. Publication is still several months away. Once again, my thanks. Regards, Craig Remington Director, Cartographic Research Laboratory University of Alabama cartlab@bama.ua.edu

    1. Newspaper Art. 1909
    2. Hi List, We have a copy of the Bullock County Breeze, Union Springs, AL, Friday July 23, 1909. The following article does not pertain to our family but mentions several names that might be of interest to others: "RESOLUTIONS ON THE DEATH OF MAJ. D. S. BETHUNE, BY ASSOCIATE MEMBERS OF THE COUNTY BOARD. In the death of Maj. D. S. Bethune, Supt. of Education of Bullock Co. and associate member of the County Board, the county has lost one of its best citizens. Truly he merited the name commonly attributed to him, a christian gentleman. Having been associated with him very closely, officially and socially for the past five years, we feel very sadly his death. Though sick quite a long time, he was always pleasant and courteous in the discharge of his official duties. Whereas it has pleased our heavenly Father to take our brother associate to himself and from our midst, Be it resolved, That we cherish very highly his manly qualities, and while we as associates mourn our loss, we feel that it is his gain. We extend to his bereaved family our most sincere sympathy. 2nd, That a copy of these resolutions be placed upon the minutes of the Board, also, that a copy be sent to his family. J. F. Martin D. A. Hixon S. J. Rutland J. P. Hall County Board of Education" Hope these names belong to some of you. Evelyn Leslie
